Large Drop in Brand-name Traffic
-
Hey folks,
I recently noticed a very large drop in brand-name traffic (in the realm of 50%) which coincided with some SEO changes to target non-brand-name searches. Thing is, the site is still ranking #1 for all the brand-name searches that the traffic drop happened in. (checked terms via SEOmoz toolbar, and also proxy with Bruce Clay's toolbar).
Any thoughts on where to start lookingfor the problem or what might have caused it? If this hadn't happened at the same time as other changes, I'd put this down to non-SEO problems.

Ah, I see.
That has happened, but only to a very small extent - when I look at analytics, I can attribute 70%+ of the dropoff to a two-word phrase with 3 variants. It was their primary phrase by a good margin, and the traffic has tanked, even though they maintain rankings for it. It's very confusing.
I did notice on insights that in 2010 and 2009 there were a few months of each year where insights went from very high interest to 0 interest. It's happening in 2011, too, and we're currently in one of those periods. The start of that 0 period in insights coincides roughly with the traffic dropoff.
That said, I'm wary of deciding that that's the reason. There -were- changes to the title tags and content at that time, and it's hard to believe that it's just bad luck .
The primary traffic source for this phrase was Yahoo, not Google. The traffic drop has occurred in Google, but to a much lesser extent (Yahoo dropped about 50%. Google only dropped about 20%). Another reason for me to not want to give too much credence to the insights info.

I was wondering if the amount of traffic for long-term queries or the diversity of long term queries fell.
Rankings might still be at #1 for the primary terms but with drop off occurring on the many secondary terms.

Thanks for the reply EGOL, I appreciate it.
I understand what you're saying about being optimized for eliciting clicks. I'm a little confused about what you mean by "poorly optimized for SERP position competition" given that they're still ranking #1 for the terms where the traffic drop has occurred, I'm assuming you don't mean ranking, so could you clarify that part a bit?
Thanks!

Google and competitors are constantly changing... could be one of these....
- Product search with big images newly appearing in your SERPs
- More aggressive adwords appearing in your SERPs (google getting more aggressive with the display or a competitor of yours gunning for all of your sales)
- A competitor in your SERPs shouting a kickass price or free shipping in his title tags
- There could be many other things that google or competitors might have done
- Google now showing links to branded SERPs above position #1
But... my bet is that your title tags were changed and now you are poorly optimized for SERP position competition or poorly optimized for eliciting clicks.

I didn't think to do this before I posted, but I checked out Google insights and there are portions for the past 3 years where the interest for these brand-name terms drops to 0 in the space of one month. Anyone know if this is an issue with Google data/insights, or if this might be a reliable indication of something happening in the world rather than just the site?
Cheers

Keyword rich domain name and page title
Hi guys, First of all, I must say I love this community, and that SEO is great and at time fascinating :d Ok my question now is, I have this domain which is keyword rich, later I noticed Google changed my pages title into something else but similar, also added my domain name (mysite.com) in the titles. Google had taken some of his auto-title-suggestions from inside my pages, later i changed them and saw google changed the titles too accordingly, nice work google ) So I figured this tile name changing is because my domain is already keyword rich, right? so the best practice is, I create a more unique descriptive title + my domain name at the end of the title. (And for homepage, domain name .com at the beginning in the title. What do you think? Thanks for your thoughts!

Is it a good idea to use an old domain name for a new product
Hi guys, I have a domain name XYZ.com which hosts the site of a technology service company as of now. The company however didn't do well and shut down a few years ago. Now, that company wants to launch a new set of technology products and wants to use the same domain name. Is it a good idea. The issues that I can see here are: 1. Google has previous pages indexed 2. There are a couple of subdomains totally irrelevant to the business. like employees.xyz.com there. 3. Can the previous indexing be completely undone. Regards, Mayank

Traffic stats disaster
Hi, We have recently moved a few old websites to an existing one and redesigned the existing website too. The visits in Analytics have fallen though the roof in the last few days. I would expect the traffic to have gone up because visitors from the old websites should now be on the redesigned one. Not sure what the problem is entirely. GA code is on the site but not before the closing head where I asked for it to be put. It's just before closing body tag. Does it make a difference? (It's a CMS site). GA code must be working because visits are being recorded (tens rather than the expected hundreds). Redirects have not been done properly - not sure what IT have done there. Would the lack of proper redirects be the sole reason for the drop? I am still hassling for 301's to be sorted. Thanks all

Site dropped after article submissions
I have a site about back pain. The name is lower back pain relief. It has a lot of content on how to treat back pain with natural remedies. I paid for botw.org and yahoo directories as well as submissions from submit edge. My site was doing well within a few months. I was floating around at the bottom of page two for "lower back pain relief" and lower back pain. I found out about Unique article wizard. I started using that to write and submit articles. Now, my website is not ranking anywhere. I submitted a request for reconsideration to Google. They said no manual action had been taken. The question: How long does this penalty last? Is that website toast now? I think it was penalized for using the anchor text too much or adding too many links at once. It has been penalized for about 6 weeks now.

Why did our site drop in Google rankings?
My site's URL (web address) is: http://tinyurl.com/3svn2l9 Hi there, We operate a travel site that lists numerous tours, accommodation and activities. Since 6th August 2011 we have dropped from top 10 SERP rankings of our pages to around result number 100 (page 10) and losing massive amount of visitors via Google Search. Our Yahoo and Bing rankings are still in the top10. We need your advice and quick! The last changes we have made are the following: -redirected the non-www version to the www version on the 1st August -bought advertising with a follow link in a sidebar that is being populated across the site (+4000 pages) about 2 months ago -added a blog to the website 2 weeks ago and posted 2 posts to date. Additionally, our website structure allows visitors (and bots) to see the same listings via different URLs which caused duplicate content. This has been the case since the launch of our website about 1 year ago. To prevent this duplicate content we have placed canonical tags on the individual listings pages. Why did our site all of a sudden plummet in the rankings?
