Why or why not use Dot Net Nuke (DNN)?
-
I have development team pitching my client on using Dot Net Nuke (DNN) for the CMS. I have no experience with DNN and not sure why the developers want to use it. They do want to use Server SQL and may build some software for a different part of the project in .NET.
What SEO and UX questions should I ask about using DNN?

My clients look to me for recommendations. Recently I was in a position where I needed to determine which CMS would be best to recommend for clients, as well as use for my own site. I reviewed about a dozen CMS systems including Dot Net Nuke and ultimately narrowed it down to three: Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress. I dropped Drupal after closer inspection and my recommendation for clients is either WP or Joomla.
If a "full-featured" site is needed, I recommend Joomla. Actually, it is my default recommendation because it allows so much flexibility. The biggest drawback for Joomla when compared to WP is it is more complex, both for admins and developers. It will take a bit more time to develop and a bit more knowledge to administrate. If a client needs a basic site I would suggest WP. These are simply my experiences and research and I am only sharing in case it is helpful.
I would also share I have used Windows-based software most of my life. I spent 7 years as a MS SQL DBA working for Verizon Wireless. All my experience is working with windows platforms, yet for web development there is a strong preference towards *nix based platforms. If I was being pitched with a Dot Net Nuke CMS, I would ask for a clear and compelling reason to accept the proposal. My guess is the developer's main experience is with that platform, and they are biased.
When developing a new platform, I would recommend a plan which is based upon the inherent coding of the CMS. When necessary rely on the most established extensions or add-ons possible. Unless you are working for a large company which has their own developers on staff, you want to avoid custom coding whenever possible. CMS software is frequently updated. You will be faced with a constant choice of not updating your software, or paying to have the custom coding updating before each update. Additionally if a key developer leaves, you are often faced with the new developer not working well with the prior code and pitching a plan to recode the site.
The entire point of a CMS is faster development, lower development costs and standardization. My main focus in receiving a pitch for any platform is to examine the development plan with these questions in mind.

Should i not use hyphens in web page titles? Google Penalty for hyphens?
all the page titles in my site have hyphens between the words like this: http://texas.com/texas-plumbers.html I have seen tests where hyphenated domain names ranked lower than non hyphenated domain names. Does this mean my pages are being penalized for hyphens or is this only in the domain that it is penalized? If I create new pages should I not use hyphens in the page titles when there are two or more words in the title? If I changed all my page titles to eliminate the hyphens, I would lose all my rankings correct? My site is 12 years old and if I changed all these titles I'm guessing that each page would be thrown in the google sandbox for several months, is this true? Thanks mozzers!

Using a query string for linked, static landing pages - is this good practice?
My company has a page with links for each of our dozen office locations as well as a clickable map. These offices are also linked in the footer of every page along with their phone number. When one of these links is clicked, the visitor is directed to a static page with a picture of the office, contact information, a short description, and some other information. The URL for these pages is displayed as something like http:/example.com/offices.htm?office_id=123456, with seemingly random ID numbers at the end depending on the office that remain static. I know first off that this is probably bad SEO practice, as the URL should be something like htttp://example.com/offices/springfield/ My question is, why is there a question mark in the page URL? I understand that it represents a query string, but I'm not sure why it's there to begin with. A search query should not required if they are just static landing pages, correct?. Is there any reason at all why they would be queries? Is this an issue that needs to be addressed or does it have little to no impact on SEO?

Is there a Consultant out there to help convert C#.net functions into PHP Wordpress functions?
We are going through a transition from SiteFinity (C# .net windows environment) to WordPress (PHP Linux environment). We currently have custom forms that make calls to webservices and also store data into SQL Server tables. Not sure how to do this in PHP and could use some help. We are located in Irvine, CA. We would prefer someone onsite, but can also work with someone remote if we must. Time is of the essence. Thanks.

How is an SEO's time best used?
We have over 50 highly varied and niche sites in our company. Each website is for an annual event spread across the calendar. I am the solo SEO person here and was wondering what your opinions are about what would bring in the greatest SEO power in my limited daily allotment; link building? Keywords? Content? Oh, and to make my life even easier - its all based on SharePoint 2007!
