Moderate blog comments Yes/No? Facebook comment plugin?
-
I was reading outbound marketing and they suggest that a good blog "does not" moderate comments. I have always taken the moderate approach, but their thought was this inhibits a conversation from taking place on the blog.
I am wondering what thoughts others may have on this and its potential positive and negative impacts, both SEO and in general.
Also I am thinking about using a Facebook plugin with my blogposts. I think this may be a good way to help get social visibility... Has anyone tried this yet?

I agree with Ryan for the most part. Here at SEOmoz we get so many comments for each post that if we moderated each comment, it would seriously kill the conversation. However we have a team of people who watch for spam, plus we do have moderation set up for people who have less than 25 Mozpoints and have a link in their comment. At that point one of the team members has to approve the comment, remove a spammy link or delete the comment all together.
In general I'm not a fan of moderating especially if the person moderating checks comments infrequently. Nothing bothers me more than leaving a well thought out comment on someone's blog post in reply to the post itself or another comment and it taking 2 days to finally show up on the site. I wouldn't bother commenting on that blog again.
There's a fine line between moderating and keeping the spam out and if you can find that you're golden.
As for Facebook comments, I haven't personally implemented them on any sites but many people who use them have really loved it. Ryan linked to my post on using them and it seems like a great marketing/virality tool for sure. Facebook gives you easy moderation as well and I think it cuts back on spam quite a bit because it has to be a real user logged into Facebook in order to comment.
Hope this helps!

I agree with not moderating comments with respect to any and all legitimate feedback. I would not remove or alter negative information or an opposing viewpoint.
I would definitely remove any spam or offensive content. To do otherwise is a poor site practice. I would think the intent of the article you read is related to the above idea. Perhaps they already have an excellent spam filter in place.

I believe Jen wrote an excellent article on this topic and I'll try to find the link.

If you desire even more info, do a Search on SEOmoz for "facebook comments". There are tons of Q&As and other articles on this topic.

It all depends on whether you like your blog being littered with comment spam. I prefer to moderate comments, and I think this is okay so long as you respond to them quickly. You may end up with fewer comments, but at least they are genuine. Blogs are often set up to automatically nofollow links in comments, but I would make sure of this before opting out of moderation.
If you have a very active, high profile blog then I think moderating comments really could impede participation. You would have to make a judgement call on how much of an issue that could be to you. I've seen advice that you shouldn't allow comments at all until you've got 1000+ views a day, based on the idea that sparsity of comments is a clear indicator that your blog is obscure. Again it's a judgement call.
I haven't tried the Facebook plugin so can't comment on that.

Social Media / Articles
Hi Mozzers, I have a couple of questions regarding starting out into social media with an e-commerce website. Most of my experience lies in niche content where a social media following is more natural. Having completed most of the site audit (at least the planning). Its time to begin planning the next move into writing articles on the blog and heading out into social media to facilitate link building whilst i finish off creating the last of the updated website content. I have plenty of subjects I can think to write about and many keywords to target with articles on the website. But I could do with some advice linking this into social media. We have youtube, google+, facebook and twitter accounts but all of them are inactive bar profile information and have almost no following. We sell technical measurement equipment across a selection of niches. My plan is as follows so far, 1. Write 5-10 amazing new articles across the selection of products

2. Link to them all on each social media platform to begin populating each with content
3. Populate the website homepage with links to all our social media accounts to encourage following
3b. Include adverts stating discount codes etc can be obtained by following us on social media a little unsure where to progress from this point, I have no budget available at the moment, but may be able to obtain some if I can achieve some results without. As always thanks for your time.1 -

Manual submission vs automated submission to social bookmarking sites for blog posts
Howdy Mozzers! Say we're creating great content on our blog and would like this content to be seen and shared by as many people possible. Should we submit our blog posts manually to social book marking sites or use an automated service like Only Wire? The advantage of using automation is obvious, saves time on submission. Are there disadvantages? Is google bot going to raise an eyebrow and give us a dirty look? Cheers! MozAddict

Facebook Reach on Post Just Spiked!
Yesterday I put a post with a photo on our company Facebook page Normally our reach on a post is 500-600 out of a list of 77,000 followers. However, since posting this one yesterday afternoon, our reach has hit almost 9,000! The only thing different with this post vs. any others we've done is that I put a text link for the company name back to the same Facebook page that the post was put on. I didn't intend to do this, it's just that when I started typing in our company name, Facebook suggested making it a link, so I thought, why not? I'm thinking somehow that made it appear in more people's timelines than usual. We posted it the same time in the day as every other post, and this was the only thing unique about it. Any thoughts?

How to migrate social likes when moving blog domain?
Hi, Our blog currently is hosted at wordpress.com and we are planning to move it under mysite.com/blog. I've noticed that at the moment in the existing individual articles there are social likes for the reader to likes/follow the page. And we do have some likes from these social buttons e.g. in a particular article I receive 4 twitter likes/5 facebook likes from those social media buttons after the article body. After moving the blog would the articles lose the social likes? How would I manage it not to? I know that there is a wordpress plugin available to purchase: http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/redirect/ If I purchase it would it resolve my problem? Please help Thanks!

Number of Facebook likes and shares for a webpage went significantly down.
I noticed that a bunch of "likes" and "shares" had gone down for a webpage I do marketing for, and I wanted to see if anyone had also experienced this. About two years ago, I realized that when I would send a FB message with a link to a webpage I was promoting, the number of shares and likes for the page would go up by one. So, thinking that I had stumbled onto something incredible, I proceeded to message over 500 people on facebook with a link to the webpage. Soon enough, I had increased the likes and shares displayed on the webpage to 635 (as shown in the Digg Digg plugin). Today, I went back to the same page and realized the number of shares and likes had gone down to 160. Has anyone experienced a drop in the number of shares and likes, and has anyone increased their likes and shares by sending a message with a link to a webpage being marketed? (You can test this out by messaging someone in facebook with a single link to webpage that displays the number of facebook "likes" and "shares" -Once you send the message the number should go up by one) Thanks

Is there any SEO benefit to hosting your Facebook photos on your own site?
I will often post photos that I have taken to my Facebook page (either personal or my fan page). Sometimes these can get lots of likes. I got thinking that perhaps I host these photos on my site (i.e. www.example.com/images/photo1.jpg) and then share that "page" on Facebook. That way any of the likes would be counted towards my site. What do you guys think?
