How do I redirect non www pages to www on a windows server?
-
As the .htaccess file cannot be worked on, I added this php code 301 redirect if the URL does not contain a www on all the pages (small website - 10 pages) :
header( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" );
header( "Location: $location" );
I want to know if this is ok for SEO? Has anyone done this on a windows server? Or if you have any better methods, it would be great if you can share.
Please help.
Thanks.

If you want to go to the www version, then you want
"^www.oberoihotels.com$"
and
{R:1to url="http://www.oberoihotels.com/{R:1
look for this tag
you dont want to have 2, if you already have one add the code to that one.
let me know if you have anny problems

Hi Alan, They are not able to do it via the control panel - and there is no way that they will share the password for us to do it. Therefore I think we have to do it manually. Can you please check if this code is correct. I have replaced my domain.com.au to www.oberoihotels.com (as an example) in 2 places : Changed "^mydomian.com.au$" to "^oberoihotels.com$" and changed url="http://mydomain.com.au/{R:1to url="http://oberoihotels.com/{R:1 Is this correct? Therefore the new code to add to the web.config file :<system.webserver><rewrite><rules><rule name="CanonicalHostNameRule"><match url="(.*)"><conditions><add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^oberoihotels.com$" negate="true"></add></conditions><action type="Redirect" url="http://oberoihotels.com/{R:1}"></action></match></rule><rule name="LowerCaseRule" stopprocessing="true"><match url="[A-Z]" ignorecase="false"><action type="Redirect" url="{ToLower:{URL}}"><conditions><add input="{URL}" pattern="WebResource.axd" negate="true"><add input="{URL}" pattern="Scripts" negate="true"><add input="{URL}" pattern="Content" negate="true"></add></add></add></conditions></action></match></rule></rules></rewrite></system.webserver>

Yes the control panel will put the code in the web.config for you, or uyou can put it in manualy.
The code above has 2 riles in it, to fix domain name, the other to make sure url is lower case

Thanks Alan. It's very clear what to do now. I don't have access but will speak to the people who do have access and see if it can done the way you mentioned using URL redirect from the server control panel itself.
Thank you!

go to yout iis server control panel look for url rewriting, if it is not there install it using web platform installer.
then it is a simple ass picking it from a list.
You can also do it in code, using a class inherting the httpmodule this intercepts request before reaching website.
But the easiest way is using the URL rewriting as i suggested.
If tyou dont have access. plonk this in your web.config, change from mydomain.com.au to your own domain
<system.webserver>
<rewrite><rules><rule name="CanonicalHostNameRule"><match url="(.*)"><conditions><add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^mydomian.com.au$" negate="true"></add></conditions>
<action type="Redirect" url="<a href=" http:="" mydomain.com.au="" {r:1"="">http://mydomain.com.au/{R:1}" />
</action></match></rule>
<rule name="LowerCaseRule" stopprocessing="true"><match url="[A-Z]" ignorecase="false"><action type="Redirect" url="{ToLower:{URL}}"><conditions><add input="{URL}" pattern="WebResource.axd" negate="true"><add input="{URL}" pattern="Scripts" negate="true"><add input="{URL}" pattern="Content" negate="true"></add></add></add></conditions></action></match></rule></rules></rewrite>
</system.webserver>

Duplicate Content Showing up on Moz Crawl | www. vs. no-www.
Hello Moz Community! I am new to SEO, Moz and this is my first question. My questions; I have a client that is getting flagged for Duplicate Content. He is getting flagged for having two domains that have the same content i.e. www.mysite.com & mysite.com. I read into this and set up a 301 redirect through my hosting site. I evaluated which site had a stronger Page Authority and had the weaker site redirect to the stronger site. However, I am still getting hit for Duplicate pages caused by the www.mysite.com & mysite.com being duplicates. How should I go about resolving this? Is this an example of a Canonical tag needed in the head of the HTML? Any direction is appreciated. Thank You. B/R Will H.

Redirecting pages from a website to another
Hello Moz community, I’ve got a question and hope you can help! I’ve been working to improve my website’s ranking for the keywords “singing lessons London”. My current website url is http://www.sonic-crew-london.com and the page dedicated to the singing lessons is http://www.sonic-crew-london.com/booking/singinglessons.php I’ve recently bought the url http://www.singing-lessons-london.com which I hope will help to climb Google’s ranks a bit more easily for my chosen keywords. I thought I could redirect the old singing page to the new url. Is that something you would recommend me to do? Is there any specific procedure I should follow to make sure the transition runs smoothly? Any help really appreciated! Many thanks

Does google like Category pages or pages with lots of Products on them?
We are having an issue with getting Google to rank the page we want. To have this page http://www.jakewilson.com/c/52/-/346/Cruiser-Motorcycle-Tires rank for the key word Cruiser Motorcycle Tires; however, this page http://www.jakewilson.com/t/52/-/343/752/Cruiser-Motorcycle-Tires is ranking instead and it has less links and page authority according to site explorer and it is farther down in the hierarchy. I am wondering if google just likes pages that have actual products on them instead of a page leading to the page with all the products. Thoughts?

According to 1 of my PRO campaigns - I have 250+ pages with Duplicate Content - Could my empty 'tag' pages be to blame?
Like I said, my one of my moz reports is showing 250+ pages with duplicate content. should I just delete the tag pages? Is that worth my time? how do I alert SEOmoz that the changes have been made, so that they show up in my next report?

301 Redirect question www to root.com
I have a site that has been up for a few weeks now and is currently in a www format and i am considering changing it to just mydomain.com I also have quite a few directory listings (including google places/bing) for this site w/ the www. url. If i do this, change it in my google analytics, and update my wordpress internal page + htaccess file. Will i lose any of the link juice i had from my www pages? Would this be something that would be advised since i've registered for many sites, or is there a potential that this could end up hurting me? Thanks,

We're working on a site that is a beer company. Because it is required to have an age verification page, how should we best redirect the bots (useragents) to the actual homepage (thus skipping ahead of the age verification without allowing all browsers)?
This question is about useragents and alcohol sites that have an age verification screen upon landing on the site.

Redirects on Window Servers - .htaccess equivalent for IIS
I am going to start searching myself, but I have a client on a Windows server needing to do redirects. So besides my usual 'Get a UNIX box', I need to know how to do redirects on IIS. Full site redirect: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^[site].com [NC] RewriteRule (.*) http://www.[site]/$1 [L,R=301] as well as page level redirects redirect 301 /[old-page.php] http://www.[site].com/[new-page] And that leads me to the question of RewiteRules also? RewriteRule ^[requested-page].html [server-fed-page].php [L] Thanks if anyone can [redirect] me to a good URL for these. 🙂 Richard
