Why mobi version of the file comes up higher on SERPs when compared to the web version?

The corresponding mobile version is http://news.oneindia.mobi/2011/10/22/886893.htmlIf we search for "Google video leaks; Gmail to get a make over soon" on Google the mobi version comes up instead of the web version. One reason could be because of the browser title. We do use meta title in our web version of the article.
For the past few months our mobi version of the file comes up higher on SERPs when compared to the web version. What could be the reason?

Thanks for the detailed response. While I haven't yet fully analyzed what you have asked us to do, few points,
1. We are using "mobi" instead of "m.", so the two domains are totally distinct. Is this a bad strategy.
2. The headers in the web and mobile version have a meta tag to point to the other version of the article (link media=handheld, link media=screen)
3. Which SEOmoz tools do we need to use to compare the two pages (we are new to seomoz)
4. One concern we have: Google quickly crawls our mobi site but not our web version of the article. We don't see any offending warnings on Google webmaster tools
5. We will do the xhtml thingy today

Hi there!
The specific reason why it ranks higher could be any number of things. I'll go over several items you should be aware of if you aren't already.
Are you currently redirecting all visitors with mobile user agent strings to the mobile version? You should be. There is a video by Matt Cutts that says Googlebot will be able to differentiate between mobile/regular pages in doing so. He does recommend using the "m" subdomain like you are currently doing. There will be no duplicate content/cloaking issues.
Now let's think of what would make one website rank over another. Links, right? If we take a look at your mobile site compared to a regular article page, we see what every visitor wants to see: content. There are no advertisements, no busy navigation menus, nothing: just the content they want to share. Wouldn't it make sense to share the mobile version then? This could lead to visitors linking to your mobile version instead of the regular. (Try optimizing your mobile design more so there is less of a distinction in this case)
Are you linking to your mobile site in any shape or form? The mobile version has less outbound links. As such, the authority it receives from any links you have up will be retained more easily than your regular article page, which has quite a few outbound links.
Can you draw any conclusions from SEOmoz tools to see a difference between the two pages?
Lastly, use the mobile XHTML doctype instead of the one you currently have. It helps Google differentiate between the two pages:

Verify all versions of site in Bing Webmaster Tools
Hello, We recently migrated our site to a new shopping cart, https, and from www to non-www, and it's been a rough transition. We've lost a lost of traffic particularly in Bing. All the versions of our site are verified Google WMT, sitemaps are submitted correctly, etc. Unfortunately, this was not done for Bing. Currently only the new version of our site (https, non-www) is verified in Bing WMT. Do we have to verify all versions of our site in Bing, the way they are in Google WMT? Also, now that it's been a few months since the switch, should we still submit a site move to Bing WMT or is it too late? Thanks in advance!

All other things equal, do server rendered websites rank higher than JavaScript web apps that follow the AJAX Crawling Spec?
I instinctively feel like server rendered websites should rank higher since Google doesn't truly know that the content its getting from an AJAX site is what the user is seeing and Google isn't exactly sure of the page load time (and thus user experience). I can't find any evidence that would prove this, however. A website like Monocle.io uses pushstate, loads fast, has good page titles, etc., but it is a JavaScript single page application. Does it make any difference?

Site blocked by robots.txt and 301 redirected still in SERPs
I have a vanity URL domain that 301 redirects to my main site. That domain does have a robots.txt to disallow the entire site as well. However, for a branded enough search that vanity domain still shows up in SERPs and has the new Google message of: A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt I get why the message is there - that's not my , my question is shouldn't a 301 redirect trump this domain showing in SERPs, ever? Client isn't happy about it showing at all. How can I get the vanity domain out of the SERPs? THANKS in advance!

How can I find my Webmaster Tools HTML file?
So, totally amateur hour here, but I can't for the life of me find our HTML verification file for webmaster tools. I see nowhere to look at it in Google Webmaster Tools console, I tried a site:, I googled it, all the info out there is about how to verify a site. Ours is verified, but I need the verification file code to sync up with the Google API and no one seems to have it. Any thoughts?

Domain stuck at end of SERPs for main keywords
I'm trying to figure out why a site has been stuck at the end of the SERPs for almost a year. On August 5, 2011 the site went from getting 1,400 visits per day from Google down to 20 visits a day from Google. For the keywords it ranked on the first page for it went to the last page in the SERPs. With Panda and Penguin, it probably wouldn't rank like it used to, but it seems to be stuck in some sort of domain wide penalty that pins it to the end of the SERPs. Even when completely new content will show up at the end of the SERPs, which makes me think it's stuck in some sort of filter. Thanks in advance for any constructive ideas. Google: site gone from SERPs, back in 1 day, then gone again?
Last December we fumbled our 404 error page with a misconfigured server and broken links on the page. Needless to say, our site dropped into an abyss - for 4 months. Yesterday we appeared again in our regular placement (actually stronger placement). Our site has been around since 09-Jan-1999 and has been a highly regarded site with good link structure and solid content for engineers. Then today we're gone again. Yesterday morning we had 125,000 pages indexed with Google which grew to 187,000 by late afternoon. Then this morning we're nowhere to be found and only 21,800 pages are now indexed. We've been working with Bruce Clay Inc through an SEO site audit doing several updates to improve through good seo practices. We haven't made any changes to the site since last Friday, April 13th (maybe the unlucky number has something to do with it....) Any ideas, insight, suggestions???? Thanks!
