Depending on your particular usage, this can be fine - i.e. jQuery sliders hode the slides that are not shown at the current time. As EGOL has mentioned though, you never know what Google will penalize tomorrow.

RE: Linkbuilding
Reciprocal link exchanges are bad news I'm afraid. Instead, look at writing a blog post, and approach those with blogs in your industry to get them to post them, and then accredit the work to you via a link.

RE: Landing page for ppc
Nothing at all, one thing though, don't nofollow the link, just use the meta noindex attribute on that individual page.
Spend some money and get an expert involved in creating this page with you, as PPC landing page optimization is an important part of running an online marketing compaign

Blogs with dofollow is the easy answer, however you should look towards guest posting and building editorially given links too! Check out SEOmoz PRO Juicy Link Finder tool

RE: Wordpress plugin for facilitating adding a post descriptions
Catherine, I see what you're after now, my first answer may not have answered it correctly.
The best route and probably the easiest thing you're after is an SEO plugin - I'd reccommend the 'All in one SEO' plugin. It allows for you to customise title tags and descriptions for individual posts, and add rules for formatting title tags of post types, categories etc.
Just install it from the backend under Plugins > Add New and check out the settings pages to active it. Then, on each individual post, check the bottom of the page - you'll see an additional meta box with additional options which are all self explanatory.
Hope this helps

RE: Link Building Features/Tutorials
Check out the following resources:
Also, set up a campaign and request a custom crawl (just search custom crawl) - this will bring up any issues on your website which may potentially be holding you back.
Check out your competitors on Linkscape/Open Site Explorer - the links are ordered by worth - so the ones at the top are the ones you should be chasing
- http://www.seomoz.org/labs/link-finder/index.php

Then read some of the blogs on the Daily Blog to get up to speed with how to use some of the tools to better effect, but as I said, check out the campaign area first..

RE: Combining web pages and it's affects on SEO?
If these pages have inbound links pointing to them, then combining this may give it a little kick up the rankings. Think to yourself why you'd want to include these pages under only one page. Are they not strong enough on their own? Do they have very little content etc.
If so, then it would be an idea to combine them, and the others should be 301 directed (which will preserve 90-99% link juice) - Source: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/About
This will also mean that you have created pages with 3x as much content on them, which will stand up to higher competition and attract more long tail searches if done well.

RE: Domain Name Masking Redirect for Brandname to Keyworded Domain
You have two options (well, 1 real good option) - This is a site wide 301 redirect onto your branded site. Brands will always beat keywords in Google these days, so it's the obvious choice. If you can change any of the inbound links to the new site that would be great too, as it will send the right signal to Google that you are looking after the transfer and doing it well.
Brand names work well in Google as they are trying to minimise the anount of keyword rich domains that pop up on a regular basis.
See the following posts for more information on Brands:
- http://www.seomoz.org/blog/dear-google-big-brands-arent-enough
- http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-next-generation-of-ranking-signals
For more help with your transfer, you should look at a .htaccess rewrite (hopefully someone will jump in with a suitable one..!!)
Hope this helps enough for now,

RE: Wordpress plugin for facilitating adding a post descriptions
The most simple method of doing this is by adding into your template file where you'd like the first 40 words followed by a More >> link.
This can also be added into the loop, for example on an archive page. If you need to display the excerpt on a home page, or anywhere out of the loop, this should be combined with the WP_Query class to call posts from the WP DB.

RE: Where are the best places online to build powerful profile pages
Thanks Daniel, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Competitive SEO agency's can copy a lot of my dofollow links, but I highly doubt that they will even try to copy these types of links. Hoping that this will give me a competitive advantage, and it's no skin off my nose, I enjoy participating in online communities anyway!

Where are the best places online to build powerful profile pages
So on SEOmoz you can create a profile page with followed links (after 200 points), just as you can do on Google Profiles.
I'd like to build a strong backlink profile which features some of these highest links that my competitors will not have the time or effort to do. I'm working hard to answer questions on SEOmoz and to be a helpful part of the community, and have published some Google Knols for the Google profile building.
My question is; are there any other sites that allow the same type of responsible profile building, preferably SEO related as this is my area of expertise.
Thanks

RE: Is there anyway for redirected links to still provide SEO value?
These links will be nofollowed so will carry no link juice. Twitter links have recently been throught to carry the largest of all social signals however, so although they do not carry juice, they can send a signal to ranking factors for a short period of time.

RE: Organic CTR on Google - KPI?
There are various studies on this, but alas I guess we'll never know for sure!
http://www.sdhinteractive.com/blog/2011/04/top-google-result-gets-36-4-of-clicks-study/
You can't really bring PPC into this stat of your as it will depend entirely on how much you are spending on adwords.
I can say for sure that if you're sitting #1 organically, and #3 on paid, with a Google Places page built in, that you will receive a good number of hits

RE: One Keyword Rank Inexplicably Blasted Into Oblivion
As Dunamis has said, these things sometimes happen for various reasons (reasons that Google no doubt will never disclose). Keep checking on it manually and keep an eye on it. RE: Custom URL's with Bigcommerce Issue (Is it worth it?)
I think you have answered your question already. This comes down to price over SEO value. Sure, the perfect pretty URL's would add something to the product and category listings pages, but depending on the competition in your market and the ongoing budget for Link Building this may not be an issue if you're on top of it all.
If you'd rather outlay a little more cost upfront, then it might be an idea to get it 100% from day 1
Hope this helps!!

RE: User behaviour on a tablet device
For search engine results, you could probably assume that behavior would be almost the same. Paid ads and natural listings still appear in the same format, so the user will continue to navigate them as they would any SERP.
What might be cool is to see a heat map of clicks from a spread of different devices?

RE: Convince me to stay! How should I best use SEOMoz tools.
Check out the campaign manager, add some keywords to each and check out the SEO scorecards. The campaign manager is for me, the main reason for having SEOMoz membership. Within in you can get reports on your on page SEO efforts (and advice on how to fix it) as well as monitor your off page SEO/Linkbuilding efforts.
You can also do in depth analysis on your competitors domains, allowing you to see where their best links come from - allowing you to get the same link to propel you to the top!!
The best way of finding out what's on offer is to just have a look around for yourself, you can't go wrong!!

RE: Question about web site structure
There are a lot of answers on here with regards to .html files and folders. The most efficient and easily-manageable solution here is to migrate to a good Content Management System that can handle categorys and page parents (I prefer Wordpress)
Products can be categorised one or two deep (suggested max for Search Engines) and URL's will reflect the product description. I.e is the item is a widget or type foo, being in url www.example.com/foo/widget/product-name would be a great structure, as both foo and widget might be part of the search term for the product, and they will also appear on the product page naturally as you describe the product.
This also helps the Keyword cannibalisation problem, as you will be able to see through administration that there are multiple pages doing the same thing.
Essentially in answer to your question, go one or two deep if it will help your users. Don't go more than 2 as Search Engines may not crawl that far if you have a young/non-authorative domain.
Hope this helps,

RE: Where should a knowledge base be hosted for max. SEO benefit?
KB's are great for user generated content (just look at this one). If it was open to all just imagine how many links it would be attracting!!
Obviously your KB would be for SEO benefits, and therefore the best method for gaining from it would be to host it on the clients domain in a sub folder. Most open source CMS's can easily be modified into Knowledge bases with relative little ease - one thing I should recommend is heavy moderation on all posts to ensure that no incorrect answers or spam goes live, as this would make their business look poor.

RE: Blogging competition - risky link acquiring method?
It is against Google TOS to ask for a link, so the best way to do this, as Dejan SEO have said is to cause a reason to link back to the competition page o the home page.
There are various methods of this, and the best has been mentioned - include a code snippet on your contest page, perhaps with a blog footer like so:
This post was for a competition hosted by Company Name, promoting Product. Visit their website for more details on this competition
(With links in obviously). This will trick a lot of people into thinking that it is necessary to include that footer following their post to keep their entry legitimate, and will obviously be gaining you the contextual link you're after, to multiple pages if you'd like.
The other method is via profile badges, or a specific badge for that competition. Encourage users to add your badges to their sites/blogs/individual posts, and make it as easy to do so as possible.
One final thing, make sure you give out badges to the finalists, again, linking to your pages. If they're winning something they'll feel obliged to use the badge!
Hope all of this helps EuropeanSEOguy!

RE: Do inlinks to a 302'd page revert to the original when the 302 ends?
The link juice always flows to the original page, not to the new page as the user follows the 302 redirect. Therefore if the 302 is removed, then the juice stops back a the old page as it always has. I can't see what your genuine reason for this might be, however this would be the best course of action for you.
Here is an excerpt of some OSE about page:
301s, 302s, and Meta Refreshes301s, 302s and meta refreshes are all ways of redirecting one URL to a different URL.301 refers to the HTTP Status Code for this type of redirect. A 301 Redirect is a permanent redirect and passed between 90-99% of link juice (Ranking Power)302 also refers to the HTTP Status Code for this type of redirect. A 302 Redirect is a temporary redirect and passes 0% of link juice (Ranking Power). This is bad for SEO.Meta refreshes are a different type of redirect that is executed on the page level rather than the server level (There are usually slower and not recommended). They are most commonly associated with a 5 second count down with text "If you are not redirected in 5 seconds, click here". Meta refreshes do pass some link juice but are not recommended as an SEO tactic due to usability and juice passing
Hope this helps

RE: SERP data went away??
I've put up a new site recently that I had been link building to during development. It got indexed in a strange way - just the main keyword, hyphen, domain name... I had it set to noindex but Google obviously followed a few links to it to see where they went.
I'm hoping this will clear up for me once the site is cached. I assume you're experiencing another quirky Google ranking script, so it should be all cleared up on the next index of your site, regardless of the 302's actually supposed to be 301s

RE: Discrepancy in Site Metrics
It really depends on when the pages that your links are on get indexed by OSE. And that depends on what links to them. OSE will only be able to discover sites by following other links to them. It may or may not choose to index a domain if it finds one... I'm sure help desk (link in a post below) may be able to help you out however I doubt that there is a way of getting these pages crawled ahead of the others.
Essentially the plan of action should be to continue link building and just have a little faith that OSE will catch up with you one day!
I usually monitor my link building efforts by looking at the SERPS and monitoring Yahoo backlinks. For me, OSE is a way of finding other's good links to steal from them!
Bearing in mind OSE is always using historical data, I wouldn't concentrate too much on using it on your own site as you're link building to it, but after.
We can always hope that out most recent links come up in the next OSE index! (I seriously hope this too!!)

RE: Will an active forum on our domain help with rankings by fresh content?
Forums get crawled pretty regularly. Whilst this wont help your ranking, it will mean that if you add a new product and theres a link to it in a discussion it may get indexed quicker. As Daniel said above, every little helps!
-
RE: Duplicate content check picking up weird urls
Erin, what tool are you using to find this? It might be something to do with the language that your CMS is written in - it might also be a matter of a trailing slash or a non www. version.
I'd be happy to help if you could provide a little more info, perhaps a screen shot?

RE: SERP data went away??
When this happens does it all point to the same URL? It might be an idea to use rel=canonical on this rather than a 302 (temporary redirect).
That way Google will acknowledge the links to all, but only index one copy of it.
In answer to your question regarding the different title tags - this does seem very strange. Because it happened so recently, I'd assume that there may be a small disparity in Google's distributed indexes (however I'm not sure!)

RE: Discrepancy in Site Metrics
I have to agree with Alex in some extent too, so his is an actual answer. OSE does not have an index as large as Google/Yahoo's. If you're looking for a slightly more accurate up to date listing of your links, check out Yahoo Site Explorer.
If the links are remaining up (assuming you've built links that wont get removes) they will show up in OSE eventually, however it may take a while for lesser known domains to appear in OSE's index. Try looking in OSE at your competitors backlinks and going after those, that way when it does re-index OSE, at least you'll be able to see that .
Hope this helps a little?

RE: Link Request Email on Site`s Link Pages
The only links you want to be paying for are advertising ones if that's the route you're taking. If your tool is equally as good then they'll usually be more than happy to link to it!
-
RE: Free link on a Paid Link Blog
If it's just this one link on one website then don't worry at all! Getting too many of these links will be a problem, but the odd one will not be a problem. How many sites are linked to from the individual page that you have your link on? You dont want to appear in amongst a lot of spammy links.
-
RE: Can link juice be passed in an iframe from domain A to domain B
You're correct in thinking no link juice can be passed through an iframe. You could however have a link immediately before or after it in the method you mentioned, and then give your partners the whole HTML including that link.
Hope that helps!

RE: Confirmation regarding canonical and syndication google tags
Jarrett, the canonical tag you have in place will suffice. I'd suggest either to have users moving between the sites in the future or to modify your CMS to auto add the canonical tag in any future posts. It might be worth speaking to your syndication partners and changing your API to only show an excerpt with a link back to your site. This will also eliminate the duplicate issues and allow more of your pages to rank. It's highly unlikely for you to get your larger media partners to add a rel=canonical to your posts on their site as they simply don't need to, as they are more likely getting the content indexed.

RE: Bounce Rate
It's a shame Google are counting this. I see their reasons though I believe. Bounces did originally want to view your site, so they are a visitor in theory. It does skew the data massively however
-
RE: Is still interesting to use aggregators?
Does your aggregator cause a lot of duplicate content issues? I've seen a few Youmoz posts or PRO Questions where some sites have lost up to and over 50% of their traffic. Please describe in a little more depth. I don't like these online translators!!

RE: Decrease in orders by67% on March 17, 2011
I don't know of any Google updates on that day, and a quick Google search doesn't seem to throw anything up...
Could you expand on your post a little more? Did you lose more long tail traffic, branded traffic etc. Do you know whether any powerful links to your site were removed, or whether there was any downtime on your site/sitemap whilst being crawled (check Google Webmaster Tools for crawl errors)

Linkbuilding to development site
We're creating a new website for a client, and we have already started link building to the pages, including some deep landing pages.
Currently the site is blocked from being indexed - we're just concerned that there may be issues when we launch the site as there will be a lot of links pointing towards the pages from day 1.
Are we ok to continue link building?

RE: Google Images
Have you got a URL? I can't find the image.
What has most likely happened is that a spam site scraped a load of content, and uploaded the images to their websites. With good linking and tags, the picture will be able to rank.
I'll take a look at the page/image in question when you link it!

RE: How does the "first link" rule work with the "reasonable surfer patent" when it comes to the main navigation for a website?
I'll look into that CSS trick. It's not hiding text, it's just indenting the text, the block level element is still on page.
I remember reading that no follow blog actually, so my mistake.
-
RE: How does the "first link" rule work with the "reasonable surfer patent" when it comes to the main navigation for a website?
My personal technique is to use CSS image replacement to replace my first link, which is usually the logo. The style method is to give the text a negative indent of 9999px, and to set the element's background image to the logo, and use display: block; to keep the whole are clickable.
If you intent to link to all of your pages elsewhere on the page, you could opt to nofollow the navigation, as the other links will pass more relevant text.
Or another option would to be include the links as per usual, and ensure that there is a strong backlink profile to your landing pages, which will eliminate half of this problem entirely.

RE: When should you turn off redirects to your new domain?
As the other responses have said, although it will cost you a yearly fee to keep the website up, (minimal), it is in your interest to keep it up to keep that 7% referring traffic. Check out Open Site Explorer to help you identify the websites that have not added your new link, and contact the webmasters to ask them to change it.
Depending on your target audience, if you turn off the redirects, there is a high chance they will be able to find you if they are looking for you. I guess it would depend on the sites content, and whether the traffic was brand related or search driven.

RE: Where to start on building links for a news website? Should I focus on promoting individual articles or create linkbait and create friends with influencial bloggers/editors/ and news websites in the same niche?
Vich,
SEO is an all round issue - both link bait (which will attract links) and link building (you actively pursuing links). To get you off the ground I'd recommend some of the latter.
Look at writing a couple of informative articles, creating some strong profiles on 'web 2.0' sites link Hub Pages and Squidoo.
Reply to this if you need some advice, I don't mind giving you some more suggestions

RE: Backlink booster - boosts and helps to index links?
There are so many site, tools and 'solutions' like this on the web nowadays - and too many people seem to be buying into them.
The only true way to gain good quality links is though EARNING THEM. Instead of spending time indexing poor quality links via RSS feeds and such like, spend your time creating something link worthy - something people will want to link to, such as the Social Media Guide. It ticks all of the boxes, it's from an authorative source, includes badges (for link backs), and it's easy to syndicate.
Whatever your niche is, someone somewhere is looking for a review, a buying guide, or a 101 ways to... list. I know I'd personally spend my time following these methods.
@Shehzad - This isn't meant to be aimed at you in particular! This is just my strong recommendation to all employing these tactics to swap to more natural SEO
