As you already know Yahoo directory, business.com and DMOZ are sites that require a review process and in the first two a large financial investment that prevents spammers from taking advantage of low hanging fruit. They have a do follow attribute when it's part of the directory not the ads. Google trusts these sites.

RE: I have two pages ranking for the same keyword.
It all depends if you don't want visitors seeing one of those pages. With a 301 redirect if someone attempts to visit page A they will be redirected to page B which means they will never see page A.
This is interesting because if you have your title tags with different keywords and your meta and content are different, it just leaves me to believe that in your content you have the same keywords, even though the substance is different.
Question are you on page 1 for both pages? That wouldn't be a bad thing as it would drive down your competition.

RE: Competing with Spammy Links
I agree with Alan, 10 links from great sites like, edu, gov or news sites can far outweigh thousands of spam links. My advice is to go after a few high quality links yourself. Your serp rankings will go north and eventually your competitors will go south.

RE: How to Start a Social Networking Site
Thank you for your response. I agree but I've already answered those types of questions and researched the competition. Now I'm onto phase two and getting ready for implementation phase.

RE: URL structure for multiple cities?
You wouldn't get penalized for the 302. 302's normally aren't used because they don't pass along link juice but in this case that is not your concern. What might create an issue for you is that people will like your site and then choose to link to it, but it will most likely be the Sydney link structure if that's the route you go, most people copy and paste the URL and then use it as a link. Then when you redo all your structures you will have one city page with a crazy amount of link juice but a main URL with no link juice. You won't be able to fix it either with a 301 because then no one will be able to see your Sydney page. You will create a problem for yourself in that sense. Hope this helps.

RE: URL structure for multiple cities?
I'm a believer in planning for the future. So I would go with www.mysite.com.au and then have the city option of Sydney and with a comment "more cities coming soon" this way you wouldn't have to worry about having a 302 redirect or changing domains later. Hope this helps good luck.

Domain expiration and seo
My domain name is free with my service with yahoo but it expires every year and gets extended automatically as I continue service, how does this impact my seo efforts? I've heard that the search engines prefer sites to expire in 3 years or more? Is this a fact?

How to Start a Social Networking Site
I am thinking about starting a niche social networking site. My question is how big of a team would I need, how much up front costs would I incur and what specific coding languages would my team need to be well versed in? I'm thinking HTML, CSS, php, MySQL but are there any other languages needed for this type of endeavor ?

RE: Domains
If they aren't in the same industry then doing a 301 redirect might make sense if you create a landing page reintroducing yourself to past clients and people who formally did business with you. So in this case the 301 redirect wouldn't be to your main page but to a specific page thanking them for their previous patronage and introducing your new brand. Hey you never know if they might be in the market for your new product or service. You might also consider selling your old domain since it most likely has good domain age and links pointing to it. Depending on the industry and authority of your site you might get a decent offer. Godaddy has an auction service or you can reach out to your previous competitors and offer to sell it to them and they can in turn do a 301 redirect pointing the old domain to theirs. Hope this helps and good luck.

RE: How to free articles sites work when they offer duplictae articles
Sometimes they rank well simply because they have been around for a very long time. Other times it's because they have many links pointing to them from various sources. Sometimes it can be simply that Google hasn't caught on to them yet but there days might be numbered.
Remember Panda only impacted around 12% as per Wikipedia. And Penguin impacted even less. So this means that either every other site is using only white hat tactics or they have flown under the radar for now but Google is always making adjustments.

RE: Is it considered spammy to have multiple pages on the same site optimized for the same keyword?
In my opinion and understanding it is actually not a bad idea to have multiple pages optimized for the same keyword. It is often used for Reputation Management, first page dominance and other reasons. YOur Primamry goal should first be to get your main page ranked as high as possible. Then once you maximize your efforts there then you can consider multiple pages on page 1.
My experience as a Realtor who just recently started learning more about seo has shown me that major sites use this tactic to push down their competitors and dominate page 1 which I'm assuming is your goal. Ex: Zillow, Trulia, Homes and Realtor all use this tactic to drive down the local Sites like mines. Fortunately I've learned enough to counter their efforts and am on page one for almost all my main keywords.
There are some basic SEO rules to follow though.
- Use White Hat Techniques
- Don't buy links for this or any purpose
- Make Sure each page has unique content and not duplicate content.
You might also want to use Vertical Search for this tactic. Meaning YouTube Videos which can rank high, Images, News Articles that you can post as a free lancer for a local paper.
I hope this helps and good luck.

RE: How to free articles sites work when they offer duplictae articles
These free article sites won't help you. They generate revenue through ads and other ways. The problem is Google will see that your content is exactly the same as another site and might decide that your site is not providing unique value to the visitor.
I would not use articles from these sites. Instead I would enlist Bloggers in your niche to write a guest post onto your site.
Or hire a content writer to write unique articles for you.
Hope this helps, good luck

RE: Whats next after I rank for many keywords?
Sponsor local races
- Marathons
- half marathons
- 10k's
- 5k's
- Tie these all to charities
- Again Press releases online but sent to local papers.
This will get you more Branding Benefits and closer to the Top Spot.
-
RE: Whats next after I rank for many keywords?
Well said, from what I've gathered here, tricks get you into long term trouble. It has to be about the long term versus the right now.
-
RE: Whats next after I rank for many keywords?
If your client is already ranking extremely well for that many keywords I'm sure she is already incorporating these tactics which are basic.
- social media: Especially Google+
- Offline tactics with online Press Releases directed to local media for positive exposure on and off line. Which will also help for greater rankings to get towards the #1 spot.
- How are they ranking on the other search engines?
- Info-graphics specific to their industry to be directed to all local bloggers and site owners.
- Brand Building:
- PPC Campaign: It is beneficial to be both in the paid and non paid positions since most people naturally want to click on the non-paid link. This gives you more impressions.
These tactics directly and indirectly add to SEO.
Hope this helps. Goof luck

RE: Search history Effects on SERPS
Thanks for the tip. Is there an app for the iPhone and iPad or something similar?
-
Search history Effects on SERPS
With search engines using adaptive search in their algo, what's the best way to reset? Currently I go to my browser which primarily is Safari second Firefox third Chrome, I empty the cache, clear history and remove all cookies and data. I also disable customerzation based on search history. Is this the best way of starting from scratch so my search results won't incorporate adaptive search tech? I also make sure I'm not signed into my gmail account since that can impact SERPS as well. What else should I be doing to make sure my search is not customized?

RE: What is the best way to learn SEO?
Thanks Brad, My Facebok campaign has worked so far, so has Twitter and Linkedin, but I haven't been able to tackle Google+ effectively yet. I have a page on Google+ and I post and invite people from my other networks but no biters. Any tips on how to start a great Google+ campaign? I'm a local Realtor so my focus is Real Estate.

RE: What is the best way to learn SEO?
Thanks Ben, I've read a bunch of books, blogs and forums but I feel there are still gaps in my SEO for my site. Trying to figure the best way to fill those gaps. I'm on page one for almost all my main keywords but I feel like there is something missing.

What is the best way to learn SEO?
I was wondering if it's worth taking an SEO Training course.
If so is it better to take a live class or Online class.
Or is better to just read all the SEO Books out there?
Or is there a good video series anyone can recommend?
What is the best way to learn SEO?
I have a good understanding of SEO but I'm not a Pro ( Yet ). Obviously SEO is always evolving so even the Pro's are constantly updating their skill set but I want to make sure my foundation is solid and complete.
Advice Please.
Thank you all.

RE: Social book marking
Social Bookmarking is like getting a vote of confidence by individuals. Search engines are in the business of providing relevant and popular results to their users. Hence if you receive a lot of likes on Facebook, twitter mentions, interest pins, Digg posts, Stumple Upon posts, delicious, of course Google + shares and likes and the other million other options out there, the search engines will recognize this and rank you higher.
The world of SEO now includes Social Media as part of the overall formula. Especially Google+

RE: Hit by Panda, what's the quickest way to remove content
I would send out a detailed report directly to Google through there submission option. I would also start writing great content for the site by creating a new blog and trying to get authoritative links to the site. It won't happen overnight but with some hard work it is possible in a reasonable time frame.
I hope this helps and good luck.

RE: How to find easy keywords to rank for?
True but since sites still have them it's a good indicator of what people are optimizing for. That's my point.
-
RE: How to find easy keywords to rank for?
All depends on your industry. What I would do is look at your main competitors and check out the source code to look at their meta tag keywords and start from their. You do this best using Firefox browser, right clicking, view source code. All the info will be in the head, top of the page. Then I'd run an analysis using the keyword tool here or using the keyword tool google provides. I hope this helps and good luck.

RE: What is your opinion on ideal url structure?
Dashes / hyphens have been the preferred style for a while now. I'm not sure about them being separators or not, but as Zachary mentioned Matt Cutts from google mentioned dashes are best practice. What I would do is find the best sites in your industry and analyze what is working for them and not working. Dissect their site with the tools here on seomoz. A point of reference. Seomoz uses dashes not underscores.
-
RE: What is your opinion on ideal url structure?
Your address should be in the meta tags.
-
RE: What is your opinion on ideal url structure?
The third one is best. Keywords should be before address and hyphens look better the underscores. Also it's unproven but there are those who believe hyphens are better for seo than underscores.
-
RE: New to seomoz, scared to death after last update
Welcome to SeoMoz, don't panic, what I would do is write content on your site or blog several times per week. Doesn't have to be everyday. I would promote those writings on all the social networks. Then I would also engage in some community charities and then do press releases to your local papers. This will get you links of high pr value. I would also arrange for talks at your local community college about the benefits of your industry and try to get the school paper to run an online story with a link to your site. Now you will have an edu link. I would also contact local bloggers and site owners and see if they are willing to write a story about your industry and link to your site. Now you have local bloggers spreading the word about you with valuable links. I can go on for days on various strategies but this is the meat and potatoes. You will do well. I hope this helps and good luck.

RE: How to promote a Squidoo lens post Penguin?
The point is that for seo value ezines and squidio and hubpages aren't as valueble as they used to be. If done perfectly and not spammy you can get some small value out of it but I wouldn't make it the foundation of your seo work. What I would do is maybe write 1-2 articles for each that have solid content and promote them on various social networks so that people can see you have published writing in different sites and that can have multiple benefits. If you write only for your site then people will assume no one wants your work, if you write for multiple sites even the web 2.0 sites people will believe you offer something valuable. That being said I would focus on Guest Blogging on sites that are similar to yours. This will accomplish most of your goals. I hope this helps. Good luck.

RE: Facebook Likes not counted
Facebook is looking to optimize its site for its advertising section. If a person likes the Facebook Page via their main site then the benefit doesn't transfer to the website but only the page. If the person has a like button for the website then this is beneficial for the site and not the facebook page. I would suggest you have a like button for the site and a second button that takes them to the Facebook page and from there request another like. A lot of sites implement this strategy. Facebook vs Google, the Adwords Wars. Site owners can get caught in the crossfires by confusion. I hope this helps. Good luck.
-
RE: Keyword optimization of main keyword across site.
You should optimize one page for "payment gateway", it can be your main page or a landing page. The other pages should be optimized for different keywords and not competing against each other. This will increase page rank for each page and make them all powerful pages vs one or two pages being strong and the rest being weak. Hope this helps. Good luck.

RE: Reciprocal linking penalty?
My thinking is that during this time you would have rehabbed the main site enough that it might not be penalized but also might not be as strong as your new site with a squeaky clean profile. So my thinking is that it wouldn't hurt. Now if you didn't rehab the main site and did a 301 then I do think it might hurt your new site. I hope this helps in your decision. Good luck and keep me posted on how it goes.

RE: Too Many On-Page Links
The more links you have on a page the less link juice you pass along. This means that you can have 100 links on a page pointing to different pages but the strength of the link is reduced by there being so many. You are watering down the links. Now I'm not saying to have just one link on a page but to have links where they make sense. If you have a page on cars and a link to Hanes t shirts it doesn't look natural. Links should be relevent to content. Hope this helps. Good luck

RE: Have my site been penalised ?
Google has been treaking their algo for a while now and sites have been shifting up and down. Some sites have been penalized without receiving a message so that can happen. Unnatural link building on low pr sites only in blogs or on link farms can definitely get you in hot water with google. My advice is to start generating great content for your site, videos help for seo, blogging is perfect, social media interactions are beneficial, and start developing a real high quality link profile. Yahoo Directory, Better Business Bureau, dmoz, BOTW, business.com, yelp, yellow pages, manta and other sites that are google friendly. If your other keywords are ok then it might just be the algo but still means your specified keyword needs work. hope this helps. Good luck.
-
RE: Reciprocal linking penalty?
You might want to consider doing both at the same time. Rehab your main site while you simultaneously build a new site. My thinking is hypothetical here but I believe it is worth a shot. What happens if you keep your main site and try to rehab but nothing ever fixes it because so much damage has been done? Or what happens if you dump that site to start a new one and it takes you years to get to where you once were, or possibly you could lose so much ground to others that you might never catch up. Now by doing a simultaneous site campaign you can give yourself 6 months to a year of hard work on both to see which one has the best results and then reassess your situation. Now this only works by not interlinking your sites. Google will think you are trying to game them instead of your real goal of having a clean link profile with a legit site. Once the test is done and you've determined which site is the strongest you can then 301 redirect one to the other. Just a thought.

RE: Canadian Webhosts
I hear you, I've had similar frustrations and I'm currently looking to change my host. I've come across this site http://www.seohost.com/why-seo-host.html , I'm still doing my research but from what I've gathered so far, you want a site that gives you 99.99% uptime, great bandwidth, not in a bad server neighborhood, 24/7 customer support and complete access to your C panel and htaccess. If I find a great one that I go with I'll send you the info and please do the same if you find one. Good luck.

RE: Since the 6th June there has been a serious drop in search impressions and clickthroughs in my GA + webmaster accounts.
No problem, are you in the type of business that has a peak and down season? If so it might just be a natural ebb and flow of your industry. Wish I could be more help. Let me think about it for a few and see what else I come up with. Good luck.

RE: Inbound links with anchor text about pills pointing to our URLs
Ok, then follow the other steps of contacting the webmasters and ask them to remove, you can also let google know about these links which will show them that you did not want them and you are actively looking to remove them. Hope it goes well.
-
RE: Since the 6th June there has been a serious drop in search impressions and clickthroughs in my GA + webmaster accounts.
First I would audit the site using the tools here on seomoz. Check out the back links and see if there is anything out of the ordinary, then check your rankings for your main keywords and see how they've been impacted. Also you will want to see how long your site takes to load, visitors don't like waiting more than 10-15 seconds for a page to load. Also make sure your site hasn't been deindexed by google. did you receive a message from google saying there was an issue?
-
RE: Inbound links with anchor text about pills pointing to our URLs
Head over to google web masters and demote the links. this will let google know that they are not wanted. Also contact the site owner and ask them to remove. Last step is to contact Google and inform them of your findings. Hope this helps.

RE: Multiple Domains for One Site
You would want to implement the 301 redirect by going through the htaccess of your server. This redirect is the most effective. If you don't have access to the htaccess then a 301 redirect with php should do the trick. Also don't forget to do it for every page. A lot of companies actually buy a bunch of variations of their domain so that a competitor doesn't buy a second version for negative purposes or for link ads.
-
RE: Paid Press Release Site - Our competitors do it... and it seems to work?
The true power of Press Release submission is not in spammy press releases but in having a real issue to write a press release about and then making sure it gets printed and posted online by a real news site. If you can do that then you will get a coveted journalistic link that google loves. What your competitor is doing is not a long term strategy. Even if it is working now, at some point google will catch them and they will spend a lot of time fixing the issue. Just continue posting legitimate content on your blog and site and every now and then do something news worthy so you can then get a media mention online, in papers, radio and on tv. Charitable giving and actions go a long way.
-
RE: Penguin/Panda/Domain Purchase
If the domain name is a solid one that has the ability to stick in your clients head then it might make sense to buy the domain and spend a few months rehabbing the quality of links. If you have the financial ability then I would buy it, use google webmasters to identify the bad links, reach out to the site owners and request they remove the links, send a report to google showing the work you've done. Then I would work on getting positive links for your site by getting mentions in online news sites, edu sites and others. You can accomplish this by hosting a small charity event. Also have your customers write reviews on Yelp and similar sites. Yahoo Directory link and BBB link. Time heals all wounds including bad links.

RE: How to Find all the Pages Index by Google?
I would set up a 301 redirect for all the pages regardless if they are indexed or not. You never know if anyone might look for that page at some point and end up seeing a 404 page not found message.
