Cool post Phil. Also, you look like a bad-ass musketeer.

RE: Video Backlinks
Looks legit Christopher! Thanks for sharing.
The proviso of course is that you're generating video that gets shared and embedded elsewhere i.e. the number 1 challenge!

RE: Complimentary sub-brand; subdomain, subfolder, something else?
Hi Vadim,
Thanks for sharing that video! Seems to conflict with what I've been reading. But I suppose it is coming straight from the horse's mouth.
P.S. Would love your feedback based on my response to Steve!
Cheers,

RE: Complimentary sub-brand; subdomain, subfolder, something else?
Hi Steve,
Thanks for commenting. The company provides Managed IT Support to businesses, and is looking to move into digital marketing and web design. So my original thoughts were:
- brand new domain
- subdomain
- subfolder and UI integration <-- (but this thought made me nauseous)
What do you think?

RE: Subdomain, subfolder or separate domains?
Hi Rubix (and everyone else!)
I actually posted a question of my own that is similar, and another member Vadim Mialik referred me to this video by Matt Cutts (Google) on subdomains vs. subdirectories-- in a nutshell, Matt says that there is really very little difference, and it is up to what you prefer.
What do you guys think?
P.S. Would be keen to know how you got on with your implementation
Cheers,

RE: Newsletter Campaign Need HELP to Create a Custom Report in Google Analytics
Hi BigBlaze,
Yes you can track the number of visitors from a MailChimp campaign right through to your goal pages, to measure the return on investment of that campaign.
Under Customization, add your goal to "Metric Group" and the "Source/Medium" under Dimension Drilldowns. You can then either drill down and select the campaign from within the custom report, or add the data MailChimp feeds Google Analytics (it will be a descriptive string of characters) to Filters > Medium.
Does that help?
Cheers,

Complimentary sub-brand; subdomain, subfolder, something else?
Hello forum!
I have a question about subdomains vs. subfolders for a new sub-brand for a company.
The company is looking at creating a sub-brand delivering a different service to the parent company. It is complimentary in a sense, but it would need a very different marketing strategy. It is not trying to 'hide' its parent brand at all, but instead would leverage the parent brand as added social proof.
I've read that creating a subdomain essentially means starting from scratch in terms of SEO, and that a subfolder would better leverage the domain authority the TLD has accrued. However, creating a subfolder does not really gel with me, as it would not in my opinion provide a good experience for visitors.
I.e. it's like running a website that sells electronics and having a subfolder marketing IT support services.
Yes, there is some synergy-- but it can also lead to visitor confusion.
I'd love your opinions on this!

Case Study Formats - On-page vs. PDF
Hey all,
I've been thinking about the pros and cons of case study formats (On-page vs. PDF), and was curious to see what you all think.
An on-page case study is crawled by search engines and has fewer barriers in terms of visibility.
The only pros I can think of for a downloadable case study (with no opt-in) is that it's less likely to be plagiarised (generally a low priority) and can have a custom design that may not fit with your website's look and feel without clashing. Also, I suppose it makes it easier for visitors to save the PDF for future reference.
Have I missed anything? Do you have a preference? Keen to hear which you prefer, and why. Let's brainstorm!
Cheers,

RE: Keyword Difficulty search volumes - frequency?
Hi Peter,
It sounds like you are asking whether there is a high correlation between Bing and Google searches. You could certainly test it out manually for your keywords and see if this ratio holds true over a 12 month period.
I would advise against it however as I know there are differences in user demographics and audience behaviour when you compare Bing to Google, which could lead to inconsistency across keywords . You don't want to make sourcing your data based on a ratio a habit, as doing so could come back and bite you in the long-run.
Here's an informative article from WordStream comparing Bing to Google in terms of behaviour and demographics.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts, as well as what Peter Li has to say about this
Hope that helps.

RE: Moz crawl sees meta description but there are none
Hi SBX Media,
I would not be overly concerned. There may be a slightly longer delay in the Chrome toolbar updating this data.
How can you confirm this?
If the crawl reported meta descriptions (yay!) then type the following into a Google search (without quotes)
"site:www.domain.com"
then hit search. You will be able to see whether the search engine has updated the meta descriptions-- if it has, that confirms the toolbar uses a different means of analysis-- it may just take a little bit more time.
Hope that helps,
Carlo

RE: Is there anything wrong with having duplicate description tags if they are relevant to their pages?
Hi Daniel,
In short yes, you want to avoid duplication. Here is a link to a relevant Moz article:
http://moz.com/learn/seo/meta-description
Get creative and write your descriptions with a little flair. Look at it as a creative exercise, and perhaps also compare the CTR's for different descriptions
Hope that helps!

RE: How to rank well on 2 keywords - 2 separate pages or 1 combined page
Hey,
Whiteboard is on the money. Having two separate pages will also allow you to deliver some useful and unique media content (photos and video) specific to cats and dogs, which will help you make the most out of the traffic you will be driving for those keywords.
Hope that helps!

RE: Keyword Difficulty search volumes - frequency?
Hi Peter,
From memory (and unless Moz have made changes) they are monthly search totals. Unless you're specifically targeting Bing users though I suggest you check the keywords against Google Keyword Planner (free). Double checking in Google will help confirm this (they should be in the same ballpark).
Let me know if that helps
