RE: How can I reduce my high bounce rate?
I've made some recent changes to adwords. Periodically google calls me up to review my adwords. Ultimately it is my responsibility but somewhere along the way the recommended spending more on display and some of the categories weren't the best choice. I think I've been creating my own spam traffic somewhat. Someone reviewed my site and recommended I institute remarketing on search, reallocation of the budget to favor search, and to pause some text display ads that were driving low quality traffic. I hope it helps

RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
Thanks Chris. I did report the bounce rate question and someone else indicated the spammy links. I will start there. I think it might be related to my javascript not working right which gives a poor customer experience? After thinking about it, i did use the meta descriptions extensively throughout the site. I have about 125 product pages and 14 product category pages which i spent a lot of time doing the seo on. for instance, if a customer searches for graphene-nanoplatelets my landing page is https://www.cheaptubes.com/product-category/graphene-nanoplatelets/ which I think is highly optimized and not too spammy and we are the 4th organic result. I have neglected some of the non product oriented pages and shouldn't have. I definitely will revisit SEO but right now code issues and spammy links are my #1 suspects. I finally fixed a lot of the script issues but now the site takes 4 seconds to load which is a deal breaker for mobile and that is 30% of my traffic. I'm trying to find someone I can hire to fix it but last time i did that it led to this situation.

RE: How can I reduce my high bounce rate?
Hi Matt - I guess its both. I mainly look at my yoast analytic but google analytic says I have a70% bounce rate. I did recover my search engine rankings, for instance for graphene nanoplatelets I am # 4 in organic search. Most of my keywords I am on the 1st page of organic results for

How can I reduce my high bounce rate?
I've recently upgraded to a WP site but i have a very high bounce rate. It is typically 75-80% and recently I saw a 95% bounce rate. I found part of the issue was I neglected to change the urls for my adwords acct but I did that weeks ago and its still very high. Last week, for 1 day only i had 18% but it shot back up when I made some code changes that didn't pan out as expected. The site is an online store and is www.cheaptubes.com
I really need to fix it. my business is severely hurting. Any and all ideas are appreciated.

RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
ok, thanks Christy - now that it appears I might have a handle on the errors and my bounce rate is back above 80% i think i will ask it to the moz community

RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
ps- there has been some wonky code causing redirects. bing says i still have to many redirects and i'm trying to figure out how to fix that
-
RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
Thanks Chris - You've given me something to follow up on. I do rank well for many keywords, like graphene nanoplatelets, i am the 3rd organic hit and am on the 1st page of google for the keywords I'm trying to rank for which makes me reticent to reduce any overused keywords. I added a WYSIWYG editor to the woocommerce product category pages so they will be the ranking pages. Rankings is the whole reason I spent thousands of $ paying someone to redo my site, but they messed it up so much that I had to spend hundred hours fixing it. I had to take it over to recoup my rankings after the algo updates. If my rankings are good now it seems like it might not be an SEO issue but why the high bounce rate? In January I had 95% bounce rate one day, almost 100% of my visitors bounced? Since then I've been aggressively trying to fix it.
I think the work I've been doing has helped. Last week my bounce rate fell to 18% for 1 day with 700 people per day visiting the site but now its back up to 80% and down to 225 visitors but the site had issues all weekend which i think i've mostly resolved. I've spent the last 4 days trying to fix the theme, it seems to have issues. I might have to retheme it but thought it was better working with a known theme trying to fix it rather than trying to retheme over the weekend. I didn't bother with meta descriptions because the search engines don't check them. us-nano has keywords stuffed their metas, i would think they would be penalized for that. I think you are right about alexa. if you know of any good code validators please let me know. I've been using W3C but the code they provide from html tidy mostly worked but caused other errors.
if you have any other suggestions please let me know. i might be missing something? how do i reduce bounce rate?

RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
Thanks Chris - i've been in WP hell since posting that. I fixed an error but crashed part of the site, no mobil nav and other theme issues. I've been working all weekend trying to get back to where i was thursday. the folks who made my theme weren't on their game i guess. They resent me an updated version of my theme but when i try to validate it at W3C it validates at 2%. The theme as I've edited validates 10-11% so it didn't make sense for me to go backwards and lose several months SEO work and validate worse when I'm trying to clear the errors. I've been validating code and uploading it, checking the site, then the next. I broke the site several times but have it back. I will check the plugin. Right now I'm trying to figure out why I have 151 404 errors according to screaming frog, they look like this. https://www.cheaptubes.com/
I'm also trying to figure out how to fix the theme files i couldn't get to validate or the ones that did validate and still crashed my site....ugh

-
RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
the java errors may be resolved. I found out the folks who made my theme don;t know how to call for java
That is something someone hardcoded into your theme.
./cheaptubes/footer-home.php:
./cheaptubes/header.php:
./cheaptubes/layout.php: <script<br>src="js/vendor/modernizr.js">
./cheaptubes/layout.php:Those three files all show you something that is basically the wrong way
to include javascript.A QUICK fix is this:
Edit the files footer-home.php and layout.php
In all cases where you have this:</script<br>

RE: Why are these sites outranking me?
Thanks Andy
We've been around longer than us-nano but not nanoamor. Us-nano links appear spammy. when I looked in alexa there was a lot of red for spam links. We all have about the same internal linking. I am far out ranking them in organic search now. None of this makes sense. I am fighting for survival now and so far nothing I've done has brought customer inquiries back up. My rankings dropped in Nov but I launched the new site in Sept. I did find problems in adwords where I didn't update links but those are fixed weeks ago. I fixed the 404 errors.
Looking at all 3 sites I think ours looks better than us-nano. maybe we're tied with nanoamor. All Us-nano did was combine keywords into page titles like carbon-nanotubes-graphene, We've put all like products in the same category where they belong. my company is 11 years old. I should be able to get my traffic back. I used to kick both of their butts rankings wise.
They both have a ton of text links on their home pages, we have images and text links. I think it looks much better for page design and for a better user experience. Isn't that what the updates that hit me were supposed to be targeting?
-
Why are these sites outranking me?
I've been hit by every update and have spent thousands of $ and hundreds of hours trying to survive. Survival looks doubtful if I can't get turned around in 4 weeks or less. I have found adwords and google errors and fixed them. Alexa says us-nano.com is the best ranked site. I used my moz bar and they are doing everything wrong, keyword stuffing, no H1's tags, poor design. How are they ranking & I'm not? My duplicate meta tags are from this week when I added alexa and bing ID's to my header to verify my site ownership.

RE: What to do with old website still online & duplicate content
Thanks Dirk - I only wanted to keep it short term. As long as all link juice is passed to new site then I can just kill it off. I wanted to redirect specific pages because the new sites page names are different. That would be the only reason to install WP, to facilitate redirects. The old site is so old it is done in frontpage so there is no htaccess file. I see you did find a piece of dup content but the errors have been there for months. I just changed that page name last week and apparently didn't 301 it. I think the strange url you found might be part of the problem, perhaps they are just bad relative links. I will try screaming frog. Thank you for your help.

What to do with old website still online & duplicate content
I launched a new wordpress site at www.cheaptubes.com in Sept. I haven't taken the old one down yet, it is still at http://65.61.43.25/ The reason I left it up is I wanted to make sure everything was properly redirected 1st. Some pages and images are still ranking but most point to the new site. When I search for carbon nanotubes pricelist and look in images I see some of our images on the old site are still ranking there https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://65.61.43.25/images/single-walled-nanotubes.1.gif&imgrefurl=http://65.61.43.25/ohfunctionalizedcnts.htm&h=359&w=451&tbnid=HKlL84A_9X0jGM:&docid=N2wdCg7rSQBsjM&ei=-A2qVqThL4WxeKCyjdAM&tbm=isch&ved=0ahUKEwikvcWdxczKAhWFGB4KHSBZA8oQMwhJKCIwIg
I guess I can put WP on the old server and do some 301s from there but I'm not sure if that is best or if I should just kill it off entirely? My rankings took a hit on Nov 15th and business has been bad ever since so I'm trying to figure this out quickly.
Moz.com and onpage.org both say my site has duplicate content on several pages. I've looked at the content and it isn't duplicate. How can I figure this out? Google likely see's it the same way. These aren't duplicate pages, they are different products. I even searched my product pages to make sure I didn't have 2 of each in there and I don't. With Moz its mostly product tags it sees as duplicate but the products are completely different

RE: Website server errors
I've been spending time fighting other fires since posting this question. Yesterday when WP automatically updated it crashed my site. I determined it was related to woo commerce...not good since most of my site is in the product categories & product pages of woo. I spent all night an today on it and got my site working. I read this forum which helped a lot
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wordpress-https-conflicts-with-woocommerce?replies=4
When I turned off the force SSL button the site came back online. In working with dream host support I learned this
I'm the WP expert! We've heard rumblings of a strange issue in Woo where that setting is
forcing http redirects outside of the checkout page, which is causing Woo and core WP to send you back and forth between http and https when the siteurl is set to https._Since https://www.cheaptubes.com is set for your home AND site urls, there shouldn't need to be a force of SSL. That is, WordPress already knows it's SSL, and therefore you shouldn't need to be forcing it on those pages. _
I then received new crawl from Moz saying I now only have 9 errors, not 600. I am recrawling to verify its fixed but I think it is now. If anyone else ever has this issue, try unchecking the Force SSL button

Insights key words

Thank you so much Trenton. I will review the articles when I have a minute. I did try stackoverflow but my question didn't get any response. Thanks for the links, very helpful. Website server errors
I launched a new website at www.cheaptubes.com and had recovered my search engine rankings as well after penguin & panda devestation. I'm was continuing to improve the site Sept 26th by adding caching of images and W3 cache but moz analytics is now saying I went from 288 medium issues to over 600 and i see the warning "45% of site pages served 302 redirects during the last crawl". I'm not sure how to fix this? I'm on WP using Yoast SEO so all the 301's I did are 301's not 302's. I do have SSL, could it be Http vs Https? I've asked this question before and two very nice people replied with suggestions which I tried to implement but couldn't, i got the WP white screen of death several times. They suggested the code below. Does anyone know how to implement this code or some other way to reduce the errors I'm getting? I've asked this at stackoverflow with no responses.
"you have a lot of http & https issues so you should fix these with a bit of .htaccess code, as below.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]You also have some non-www to www issues. You can fix these in .htaccess at the same time...
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]You should find this fixes a lot of your issues. Also check in your Wordpress general settings that the site is set to www.cheaptubes.com for both instances."
When I tried to do as they suggested it gave me an internal server error. Please see the code below from .htaccess and the server error. I took it out for now.
BEGIN WordPress
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule ^.$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]</ifmodule>END WordPress

RE: New website server code errors
Can someone please help me! the code that was suggested either didn't work or I'm not putting it in right as it broke my site and I have no idea how to fix it. This past weekend I put W3 cache on it and tinypng to compress my images and optimize the site. Google Page speed said my website is loading 30% faster but now I'm losing rankings again and the Moz crawl now says there are 618 pages with redirects compared to 300 last week. I didn't redirect any pages last weekend. Is it possible that the W3 cache did it? I was trying to fix the issues below from pagespeed which is why I put the W3 cache on it and did the image optimization.
Should Fix:
Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
Optimize images
Consider Fixing:
Minify JavaScript
Leverage browser caching
Minify CSS
Minify HTML
-
RE: New website server code errors
i have tried again to insert the code and it broke my site again. I was able to edit the same file to leverage browser caching successfully so I don't know what i'm doing wrong. I tried movng this code to right below RewriteEngine On and before the Rewrite Base. I tried it at the end where I tried before, no luck. the file now looks like
BEGIN WordPress
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]Browser Caching
FileETag MTime Size
<ifmodule expires_module="">ExpiresActive on
ExpiresDefault "access plus 1 week"</ifmodule>END WordPress</ifmodule>
Does anyone have suggestions of how to implement Andy & Dirks ideas?

RE: New website server code errors
Thank you Dirk. That must be what moz sees too. I'm new to WP & worked with a developer early on who turned out to be just kinda coasting thru easy 3-5 page sites but not very good with ecommerce sites like mine. I've spent months finishing and fixing it. if you want a laugh, my old site until 3 weeks ago was still in frontpage and that's why (along with outdated SEO methods) i got hit hard by algorithm updates. This site was built on another server and moved. I've still been fixing outdated links to the dev server where i find them. I will try your suggestion today

How do I fix a broken link to a product category page in wordpress?
We are building a new site currently at http://67.222.109.48/~cheapnan/
I started doing some SEO after the developer I hired failed to do it even though it was in the agreement.
I did our old site so I should be able to do this but I am new to wordpress. Now when i go to the products tab at the top of the page the first 2 have broken links, I checked the rest and there are 3 total that I need to fix. I am unsure how to access the navigation so I can fix the links. Please tell me where to look.

RE: How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
ok, thx for that. I will try it. I know the pages that need the 301 from the others. all the bad pages have index2.asp in the names. I have changed my ftp and login passwords
good to know the 404 don't count against me
-
RE: How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
I went to GWT today and now that I deleted the 2 malicious pages, my site now had 1950 404 errors of which only 15 are legitimate that I need to 301. I'm not sure how to handle this now. I read that google doesn't count 404 or 410 against you but 1950 pages is a lot. I would like to deal with it. I thought about wiping out the site and uploading a new version of it but I think it will have the same errors. Any advice?
http://www.cheaptubes.com/: Increase in not found errors June 20, 2014
Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages.
Recommended action
- Check the Crawl Errors page in Webmaster Tools.
- Check that pages on your site don't link to non-existent pages. (If another site lists a broken link to your site, Google may list that URL but you may not be able to fix the error.)

RE: How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
Thank you so much. I changed my main login & FTP passwords today. I found that they had changed my email address to info@chatfieldstatepark.org & the last name on my account was changed to Puraty. I suspect it might be networksolutions who got hacked but i don't know for sure. I updated and scanned my computer last night and it is virus/malware free.
I am on shared hosting. I need to get my site updated and off frontpage & then off network solutions. You helped me back in April when i was trying to get my rankings back, thx. I have an interim plan.
1- I will use filezilla to FTP and it shouldn't have the same vulnerabilities as frontpage as it can be updated.
2- My theme designer said the theme doesn't rely on FP extensions. With this in mind I plan to download an HTML editor and can hopefully do future editing from there.
I think this is my short path to getting off frontpage. Does that make sense? I do realize I need to get from HTML2 to HTML5 or something more modern but I'm tryimng to handle this while juggling my other responsibilites in my 80hr work week.

RE: How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
Thanks you for your response. I had thought of changing my FTP password but the hosting co's servers were down for maintenance. They blamed it all on me. I did delete the index2.asp page and all the links are broken. I had deleted pages in April when cleaning up the site & I think I deleted this then but didn't know it. I do have a restorable version and I will pursue this tomorrow as well.I will check about the malware, thx as I wouldn't know where to do that. I have been having email problems for some time. I have moz scan my site every week (started in April) and they never detected 10,000 extra pages. I suspect I deleted it in April & they got back in. Maybe I should start selling Nike? : ) IS GWT google webmaster tools?
-
How do I stop someone from hijacking my site?
I had lost a lot of search engine rankings & it almost put me out of business. I worked a lot on the site in April and in May my sales rebounded 37%+ almost back to where they typically are. I have blamed Panda and saw another Panda update in May and my traffic is declining again. Today I happened to decide to check what pages were being indexed and I also noticed that when I published an update this morning it said the page "<cite class="_Zd">www.cheaptubes.com/index2.asp</cite>" exists on the destination server but not in current site and it asked if I wanted to delete it. I said no at the time but am going to delete it right after this question. I went to google & put "site:cheaptubes.com" into the search. My website has about 50 pages but google has "About 2,160 results" @ 10X per page. The first four pages are mostly my pages but I noticed even on the first page, 3rd result was for Nike shoes and it isn't my site. Someone has hacked my site and put up over 21,000 pages! That must be the real reason behind my website problems, right? How do I stop this from happening again? Is this having the negative effect that I fear it is?

Cannonical tag not working
I have put canonical tags on most of my pages as I'm slowly fixing the website errors that cause me to lose my rankings last July. However, when I search google for "graphene nanoplatelets" i find it shows the non canonical version. see below cut from the 2nd page of organic results.
Graphene Nanoplatelets-GNPs - Cheap Tubes Inc.
<cite class="_Hd">cheaptubes.com/graphene-nanoplatelets.htm</cite>High quality, low cost Graphene Nanoplatelets-GNPs.I know I put the canonical tag on the page, see code below. I do not see an error but I am an SEO rookie <title>Graphene Nanoplatelets-GNPs</title> If anyone can find an error in my canonical tag, please tell me where it is so I can fix. I know its affecting other pages as well and most should have the tag. Some non product pages don't have it yet but will as I continue fixing it.

RE: Duplicate content penalty
Thx Jane- No I wasn't aware of that. I don't get it because I put canonical tags right under the Head and I used the code below to do it. I will check again but am unsure how to fix it
I don't even know how to fix coding on the Http://cheaptubes.com site. It seems like when I add content to the canonical site it updates all of them. Thx for pointing out errors, you are giving me something to fix and improve.
-
RE: Duplicate content penalty
Thx Jane - I may not have put a canonical tag on that page yet but its the same for every page. I can't access the http://cheaptubes.com but I can access the canonical version to publish. I did put canonical tags on most of my other pages such as the SWNTs page but it still shows a non canonical version when moz crawls it. Perhaps a 301 from http://cheaptubes.com to the canonical page? I'm just not sure how to handle it.
-
RE: Duplicate content penalty
Hi Everyone - I'm hoping you can help me out again. I have a functional 301 on cheaptubesinc.com. that cleared about 1/2 my dup content penalty on the moz crawl this week. As you can see in the results below, I still have 57 pages with dup content according to Moz.
57 Duplicate Page Content
13 4XX (Client Error)
57 Duplicate Page TitleI checked and I think it is mostly a canonical problem. I do have Rel Canonical tags on all my pages. When I clicked on the 1st one it appears that is the case, see below
cheaptubes.com carbon nanotubes msds
http://www.cheaptubes.com/cntmaterialsafetydatasheet.htm29414872001 duplicate
cheaptubes.com carbon nanotubes msds
http://cheaptubes.com/cntmaterialsafetydatasheet.htm25My question is, do I need another 301 from http://cheaptubes.com to the canonical version? I'ld rather not since I had to fight with network solutions for a week for them to add the / after .com so my other pages would work. Is this a penalty I should still be concernedabout given that I have the rel canonical tags? Please let me know your thoughts on thisMike

RE: Renaming web pages vs new web site
Thanks for your help William. I got the old url cheaptubesinc.com 301'd to cheaptubes.com this week. Of course network solutions left off the / after .com and before the page name so that only the home page would 301 and they could try to sell me more 301s, it cost $60 for 1 and I have 48 pages on my site. I called and emailed them all week and they kept saying they had done it right and and they couldn't force google to change the links. I then realized if I typed www.cheaptubesinc/graphene.htm that it didn't work because it 301'd to www.cheaptubes.comgraphene.htm. They were argumentative with me even though I was polite with them (though I didn't want to be). I finally got a tech on the phone who said he would add the slash and ask his boss for forgiveness. However given the history of having the domain parked and pointed before and that not working over time & now this, I think my best bet is to transfer my domains to someone else. I heard bluehost is good. My concern is if they were that unethical in our dealings and the boss was argumentative in emails than they could go in an remove the slash at any time.
I also found a ton of code errors right at the top of my pages. I now know it was from putting up temporary messages but not checking to make sure the code was clean. The woman I bought my them from (6.5 years ago I paid her $60 and she still helps me for free, what difference between her & NS) notice open H1's & P elements at the top of the pages. I was still ranking well for acronyms but missing out on the long keywords since last july which caused my sales to drop off. I figure I lost at least 150K in sales because I neglected my website and didn't clean up the code on my pages a painful lesson I won't soon forget. On tuesday, when I searched single walled carbon nanotubes I had to go 8 pages back in google to find my page. By week's end I was #8 on page 1 and ahead of sigma aldrich a major materials supplier.
Thank you so much for your help William, it is sincerely appreciated
Mike

I called and emailed them all week and they kept saying they had done it right and and they couldn't force google to change the links. I then realized if I typed www.cheaptubesinc/graphene.htm that it didn't work because it 301'd to www.cheaptubes.comgraphene.htm. They were argumentative with me even though I was polite with them even though I didn't want to be.
Thank you so much for your help everyone, it is sincerely appreciated
Mike

RE: How to make a .dwt in html 5
Thanks Lesley- I've managed to get the 301 done. Now I plan to resubmit my site to the major engines. Sadly, the state of my business now precludes me from hiring someone to do it for me. I am going to wordpress and already have it being installed with my hosting co so I can start on it. I bought the X theme.A few months ago I could've afforded the website to be built for me, now I can't.

How to make a .dwt in html 5
I bought a new HTML 5 theme. My website is still in frontpage and now the SE penalties are killing my business I have lost over $150K in revenues since July compared to the previous year and am going insolvent if I don't get my rankings back. So I have redo my website this week. I have tried many times to do this with many platforms (drupal, C5, joomla & others) and my brain keeps getting stuck. I think I figured out why. I am used to frontpage and the .dwt which allows me to easily create new pages from the .dwt and I know enough about SEO to do the job but I can't get out of the gate with the new themes. The .dwt worked with my brain & I am lost without it. My questions are
1-Is there a web editor I can get for HTML5 that I can create a .dwt from? The site I got the theme from also sells them for dreamweaver & expression web but I am concerned if I use those I will find myself right back where I am now, w/ an unsupported platform.
2-The other thing I am stuck on is when I open the index.html file in an editor and try to modify a page to get started, I try to preview the page and I can't see the CSS. Is that normal? My concern is spending the massive amount of time to do the work and then finding it doesn't display properly.
3-I also need the ability to 301 redirect my old pages which I can't do with frontpage, I'm at the point where i must redo the site ASAP and upload it but I can't get it started. I must rename most of my pages for SEO reasons, i used short form page titles not long form when I did it years ago. For instance, the domain is cheaptubes.com and I have a page that is cheaptubes.com/swnts.htm when it should be cheaptubes.com/single-walled-carbon-nanotubes.htm for proper SEO. I need to redo the site, rename the pages, and then 301 to the new pages. I had my hosting co do a 301 years ago from my old domain cheaptubesinc.com to the new one cheaptubes.com but a moz member correctly showed me yesterday that the 301 is no longer there. (another reason to get to a platform where I can do the 301's myself). I am getting a duplicate content penalty as the SE's see both sites with the same content. I think all of these things add up to the total devastation I am seeing with my business and I will go under soon if I can't start ranking well again. If I can get the new site up & the 301's working then I will resubmit the site to the SE's
4- do I need to 301 the old site too?

RE: Renaming web pages vs new web site
Thx William- The only way I could do it was to have the hosting co (network solutions) do it for me. The only way I can make changes to the site is with frontpage which can't do php. I called the hosting co and they did it for me. I am unsure of how to do it given my situation.
