I think there is a lot of value in getting backlinks to interior pages, often referred to in SEO as "deep-linking." However, you need to be really careful about how you pursue this. Naturally, I Website gets most external links pointing to its homepage and a much smaller fraction pointing to interior pages. If all of a sudden you start getting a disproportionate number of external links to deeper parts of your site (i.e. product pages on an e-commerce site) with very specific anchor text, your link profile is suddenly going to change. That could cause Google to do a double take and possibly consider those links as suspicious. You definitely don't want that, so just be cautious and only do it when it's a natural linking situation from a reputable site.

Woohoo! Yes, I think it's a great solution too. I have a lot of respect for B & H Photo (even though they are a competitor, lol) - They know what they are doing.

I do no several sites that never take a page down for products that are no longer available. Here is an example:

It's really kind of a brilliant approach, definitely one we are considering. Notice how there is a note on the page that says "This product is no longer available" and then there is a link that says "View Similar Items." So not only are they retaining the original page and its authority, they are making the most of their internal linking structure too.

Interesting scenario. You are correct in that yes, those pages would eventually drop off. However, you have a couple of problems. First, in the event that your product page has built up some page authority, you are going to lose that when the page goes away unless you execute a 301 redirect, at the very least back to a category page. The other problem is just from a visitor/usability standpoint. That is, you don't want potential visitors being served up a bunch of 404 pages because that's going to negatively impact your traffic, bounce rate, etc.

As much work as it is, I would do 301s and create a user-friendly, branded 404 page, so you're covered from both aspects. It looks like you already have a custom 404. I would just add language to it that explains better to a visitor why they are on that page and then give them a link that takes them directly back to your storefront.

There may be some other alternatives that folks here can suggest. I'll be interested to see what others have to say as I too am in the e-commerce space and clearance products often fall into a similar situation for us. Hope this helps!

LOL - Okay, I'm the answerer so it's against my own self-interest to jump in and try to help here, lol, but hey, that's the kind of community SEOMoz is.

I actually went into some of my own old Q&A questions and tried to uncheck some answers to see if I could figure out how to do it. No matter what I did I could get the answer to flag from "asnwered" to "unanswered."  You can easily change a thumbs up by clicking thumbs down instead and then you can change it back to thumbs up again by clicking thumbs up again.

I think you bring up a great usability point. I totally agree that we should be able to change a question from "answered" to "unanswered," because sometimes we think we have a workable answer but then it doesn't work or requires follow up.

No worries. I don't mind losing the points. I don't want points if I didn't really answer a question.

I would love to hear from SEOMoz about the reason for using [exact match]  - perhaps because that gives the more relevant results instead of broad match results, which as we all know, get progressively less relevant and sometimes completely irrelevant by the time you get to page 3. Since there's no sense in trying to compete with irrelevant results, it's probably better to know what the true results are for an exact match.

Just a thought. Perhaps someone from SEOMoz can chime in?

This is a great question. My answer (which is my own and not endorsed by any committees or special interest groups, lol), is yes, broad match. You are correct that no one (unless they are librarians or grad students working on their dissertations) uses boolean search elements like "(" or quotes. One thing I will say, is to consult with your clients about your results because the companies who are in the top 10 results for a particular term may or may not be considered to be true "competitors." For example, I work for a company that sells "Shure" brand microphones. If you type in "Shure microphones," you will inevitable get results from the manufacturer in the top 10. While yes, they might be "competitors" in terms of top 10 results, but they aren't competitors in terms of doing business. Most likely, my company is never going to be able to outrank "Shure" for "shure microphones. So, the true "competitors" are the other resellers who are managing to make it into the top 10.

The other thing to consider is location. If your company only sells in the USA, but is being beat out by a company that sells internationally, well, are they really a competitor? I think what I'm trying to say is that there are "competitors" in terms of "who do you have to compete with in order to make it into the top ten of a given term." And there are "competitors" - "Companies that you directly compete with for real customers."  I'm absolutely certain that these two groups aren't identical.

Whew, that was a little longer than I intended, but I hope it's comprehensible!

I a agree with Zakaria and George. I too am struggling with the same issue. I even private messaged SEOMoz to get their take on my specific situation. Their answer agreed with Zakaria. But believe me, I understand how hard it is to go to a CEO who sees his competitors outrank his site and convince him that you just need to keep exactly what you are doing. I think you are definitely on the right track by going after your Toyota niche. Sometimes the problem when trying to explain to a CEO or Marketing Director that you are doing the right thing is because they are hung up on "vanity" keywords. What I mean by that is keywords that they want to rank for but probably the site really shouldn't rank highly for based on content and competition. As you mentioned, your competitor's site has a broader scope, meaning they will have a better chance at ranking for broader, and perhaps more competitive keywords. However, by going after "Toyota" you probably have a better shot at actually increasing revenue than you would if you spent a lot of time, money and energy chasing those harder keywords.

Hah! Funny coincidence Well, nonetheless, the problem seems to be resolved. Here's what's interesting Keri. The meta refresh was actually fixed on September 23rd, before last month's linkscape/OSE update. If the meta refresh was the only problem, our link profile would have shown correctly back then. This mean it was either our canonical tags, the breadcrumbs, or both that were contributing to the problem.

I'm just happy it's fixed! Yay!

Well, you just aren't going to believe it. It all had to do with our breadcrumbs. The breadcrumb for the homepage was still using the old homepage URL (the one in use when we had a meta refresh happening). I had my IT director update it and check out what happened to our link profile in one day:

Total External Links:  Before -  2,757     After -  **4,311  **Total Internal Links:   Befpre -  125        After -  3,221
Total Links:               Before  -  2,882     After -  7,532

Our Domain Authority and Page Authority also both went up by 3 points instantly. I want to thank you for hanging in with me and helping me get to the root of what was wrong. People like you are what makes SEOMoz such a great forum!

Hi Cylo, I'm not sure if saying Google caches dynamic pages automatically is an accurate thing to say. I would say it like this: Google is more apt to cache and index a dynamic page if it is given a SEO-friendly URL.  Perhaps a Mozzer who is more technically adept than I can comment on the accuracy of that statement.

That being said I definitely wouldn't recommend using dynamic URLs (which it sounds like you are not). Here is how you can set up URL-rewrites in your .htaccess file if you are on a Linux server: http://www.webconfs.com/dynamic-urls-vs-static-urls-article-3.php

If you put your URL in the Structured Data Testing Tool http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets  You should see your profile picture from Google+ (or your brand icon if you set it up as a publisher from a Google+ page for business) next to your listing.

As long as you have proper canonical tags in use, sharing your content is not a problem. I would, however, encourage you to at least ask for a by-line or author credit that links back to the location of the original content. I don't think there's any problem at all with others allowing you to add your RSS feed to their blog netword. However, I could be wrong about that point and am interested in what other might have to say. In my mind the whole purpose of an RSS feed is for sharing, so I can't imagine it would be a problem.

As you do your markup you will want to use the Structured Data Testing Tool to view how your listing will appear in the SERPs. Keep in mind that it's completely optioinal for Google to display any of it, so they might or might not. It also could take a while for the structured data version of a page listing to begin displaying. Once you are satisfied with how your listing looks in the testing tool, just give Google some time to start displaying the info.

You will also want to establish authorship for your page by joining Google+ and connecting your profile to your Website. If you are a brand or a business, then you would want to establish the brand or company as the publisher. You may have done this already but if not I can provide detailed instructions on how to do that too.

It is my understanding that Rich Snippets are not recognizable by all search engine bots. The advantage to schema.org is that it is an agreed-upon format that works equally well in all the major search engines. Consequently, skip rich snippets and just go with schema.org.

It might be helpful for you to study how they organize these thousands of products. I love SEOMoz too. While I do think there is a fair amount of straight up marketing discussion here, it is called "SEOMoz" for a reason. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to be snotty or flippant. I just think the focus here is pretty laser tight, which makes it so great for SEO. Hi Joel,

Unless you have some fairly robust IT resources I would advise against self-hosting. If you want eyeballs, I'd go for YouTube. If you want traffic and you want your videos to rank in Google and then direct visitors back to your site (instead of directing them to YouTube), I'd opt for Vimeo or Wistia (which is what SEOMoz uses). Even if you can do everything to get your videos formatted right for different devices, 6 months from now you might have to do that all over again. If you go with 3rd party the formatting is done for you and will always be current with things people are using at any given moment.

In general, I think the architecture I see on your sample site looks perfectly acceptable to me. It looks like you are only going down to one subcategory after that, which is a good thing. I think when too many categories becomes a problem is when the categories go 3 and 4 deep with subcats of subcats of subcats. Once your content or products get buried that deep, it's hard for search engine bots to keep crawling. I think if you can keep you architecture as flat as possible and still make it easy for people to find what they seek, you will do just fine. I think adding the filter width, length and depth as sorting options is good. Just remember that there is navigation and then there is sorting. Giving your visitors several clear and even redundant ways to find things is good.

In my expierience, the way your site is working is unusual. Most often, even large dynamic e-commerce sites create pages on the fly. They are cached and inexed by Google without problems. I would definitely opt to get rid of the 302s, put 301s in place and allow the pages to be built dynamically, especially if it is a large site (which it sounds like it is). Just my two cents.

Out of curiosity, how do you handle on-site search?

Hi Jeffrey. Many times these are 404's produced by sites trying to link to you that perhaps have an incomplete URL, or incorrect URL. Have you looked at your Google Webmaster Tools 404 errors? You can see there where the source is. If the source is on your site, keep in mind that sometime URLs can be abbreviated in hypertext and still work when clicked, but a bot will take the URL very literally and not see the rest of it, consequently producing a 404. The way SEOMoz q & A posts abbreviate URLs is a good example. When you click on them they work, but if you copy-and-pasted just the snippet that's visible on the page into a browser, it would produce a 404.

A lot of online Web comparison tools and even occasionally some directories will display truncated URLs, that might look like this for example:  "http://bestslavetraining.com/activity/ac.."  I would check them in GWT (you may have already done that) and see if the culprits are mostly external or internal.  Hope that helps a little.

Yes, I have noticed this sporadically and now it seems permanent. I have to confess, I've had a few "Who moved my cheese?" moments...lol. I had a lot of trouble finding the "related searches" field. I still have to look for it every time I want to do fast and dirty keyword research. They've changed the image search too and moved the links to search tools from the left nav to the top. Right now I don't like it, but I think that's only because it's different and I can't find anything. Ask me again in 6 months

See how the old homepage URL is showing 3,174 internal links, while the new one is only showing 125?  We fixed the meta refresh on September 23, in addition to correcting all canonical tags and making them absolute. I can't figure out why the new home page URL isn't getting credited with those 3,174 internal links. What do you think?

Hi Streamline. The issue persists. I did discover (completely by accident) that the breadcrumb URL in our source code is the old home page URL. I've attached a screenshot. Could this be the reason we are not seeing those internal links being credited to the new homepage URL?

Take a look at the auto-suggest for simply "the best way to" -   "weed" is still in the picture. I was curious if I put in "related searches" what I would get...Apparently there are a lot of fat people with fleas who want to get high, predict the future and ask a girl to homecoming.

Hi Brett, You ask a timely question because I just attended a great live webinar on Halloween presented by MecLabs. Here is a link to the presentation slidedeck: http://www.slideshare.net/marketingexperiments/how-do-website-colors-impact-conversion  There are some great real life optimization examples of how simply changing the color only on certain parts of a page had major impacts on conversion rates. One of the biggest takeaways from that webinar was simply copying what might have worked for someone else is no guarantee that the same will work for you. It really depends on your business, your customer personas and a number of other things. You really need to test and even survey your customers to determine what colors might be best.

If it's relevant and valuable I'd advise buying it only if there two conditions are met:

1. The original content stays intact
2. You are willing to devote time and resources to adding fresh new content, regularly

If those things are satisfied I'd say "go fot ir!" - Otherwise, it's a no go. IMHO

I don't think anyone here can tell you to disavow one link or another. That is something better determined by you in the context of what you know about your business.

I don't think anyone here can give you a concrete answer to your question. If they do, be suspicious. If you add 30,000 pages of totally unique content....then I think you will skyrocket to the top of organic listings. If your content is substantially similar, or just copies of content from other places, then, it's not really going to help you at all. It might hurt you. It might not.

Hi Punit. If you get anyone answering answering your question with a concrete number, be suspicious.  There are just too many variable factors in ranking to give you any kind of concrete number answer to your question. For example. say you are a newer site competing against an older site and you gain a great PR5 inbound link...Well, say your competitor gains a PR7 inbound link the same day. Guess what? You are still behind. You see, it's not just about what your are doing. iI's about what your competitors are doing at the same time.

Ok. So that might leave you feeling a bit hopeless. Don't despair!

What makes you different from your competitors? Who could you pursue to ear na link from that your competitors most likely couldnt' get? Bammo. That's who you need to pursue.

And, IMHO, forget the PageRank. Go after well-written, relevant sites, regardless of PR. Why? Because that's where your people (you know, the people who are most likely to love your site and its products), that's where they are most likely hanging out. Create relationships with THEM and then you got something.

Hi Claude. I think this is a great question. I don't think Googlebot, in most cases, can tell the difference between an ad or a link. I say that because I see both the sites I manage and our competitors showing inbound links from sites that, when investigated, often turn out to be banner ads or even Google display ads.

If the site you are striking up this relationship is reputable, I wouldn't worry about it. I would ask only one question: Does linking to this site, either via a paid ad that links to a landing page or any other way, hold any value to visitors of your site? Will it do something for them? Will it add to your credibility in their eyes? Will it offer them something? (Even if it;s just information that's relevant to them) ??

If the answer to all of those is no...I wouldn't do it. If the answer to any one of them is yes, I'd do it and I think you'll be just fine.

This is just my opinion. I am interested to hear what others have to say about how Googlebot sees paid ads that produce links versus a regular text link scenario.

I don't see any issues with your canonical tags. Is it possible that the e-commerce platform you are using isn't correctly handling the re-writes to SEO-friendly URLs?

Hi Brett, While it's not really SEO because it involves paid advertising, I am a big fan of two specific types of paid advertising specifically for branding purposes. One is Facebook Ads, purely because your ability to target by demographics, and psychographics are more robust than practically anywhere else on the Web. You can get really, really specific with who your target audience is, and that saves money and gets better leads.

The other I just used recently for the first time and that is Stumbleupon's Paid Discovery. While it doesn't target as specifically as Facebook you can still target much tighter than you can with a Google text ad on the search network. It's also extremely affordable, as little as $0.10/click. Their internal tracking is pretty good but of course it's better to use something like Google Analytics. You can set up a Social Media tracking dashboard there and view everything all in one place. Also, you might want to set up Advanced Segments that will allow you to segment and analyze your social media traffic in GA. My crawl report is listing all of these as separate URLs with identical duplicate content issues, even though they are all the home page and the one that is http://www.ccisolutions.com (the preferred URL)  has a canonical tag of rel= http://www.ccisolutions.com:

I will add that OSE is recognizing that there is a 301-redirect on http://ccisolutions.com, but the duplicate content report doesn't seem to recognize the redirect.

Also, every single one of our 404-error pages (we have set up a custom 404 page) is being identified as having duplicate content. The duplicate content on all of them is identical.

Where do I even begin sorting this out? Any suggestions on how/why this is happening?

Wow, thanks so much. I appreciate that. It is frustrating, I know. I am working with an arts organization right now and they haven't got a clue what SEO is. I have a lot of education to do. It's difficult, but necessary!

I would highly recommend submitting a sitemap. I am surprised you haven't already. Is it because there are so many articles? Is there any way to generate an automated list of your article URLs? If you can then formatting a sitemap shouldn't be that difficult even if there are a huge number of them. I also like your idea of adding the "View all" option. The company where I do in-house SEO is battling pagination issues at the moment and we believe this is a good solution and it is one that is supported and even recommended by Google here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/03/video-about-pagination-with-relnext-and.html

Hi, I understand your frustration because there are so many posts saying "all that stuff you used to do doesn't work any more so stop it and do something else...like RCS." I totally and completely agree with the RCS part. In my opinion if there isn't RCS going on, then SEO strategy shouldn't even be talking point. That being said, let's say you are doing SEO for a company that does do RCS. Then what? Are you still not to do any of these things?

I would argue that every element on your list still work, even directory submissions (okay, nobody shoot me...but hello...Yahoo anyone?)  And Press Releases still work too...when you have real news. In fact, just today YouMoz put up a post I wrote about how blog commenting can actually still work and work really well, even post-Penguin.

I'd approach everything on that list and create a strategy and schedule for each one, but one that is driven by connections, relevance and newsworthy events instead of quotas like "I need to build 50 links this week." We get so fixated on the idea that someone has the "secret plan" the "formula" to a special SEO potion that's going to work for everyone. There is no such thing. The reason people go around proclaiming that any one of the things on your list don't work is probably because they beat them like a dead horse, and dead horses don't run.

There isn't a secret combination or plan or strategy...the only one that's going to work is the one that custom made by you for your site. What works on one site or for one business, may most likely not work for another. Try things. Experiment. Some things will work, some things won't. The great thing about SEOMoz is that you can ask such a huge variety of people in so many different areas of businesses what's working and what's not. Here, you will find enough ideas to keep you occupied trying new things for a long time. But don't let anyone tell you all the old things don't work any more. They work, just maybe not quite like the cog wheels of some big SEO machine some were hoping to turn and have links come flooding out.

I do have one sort of off the wall idea that was mentioned this year at Mozcon that I thought was brilliant for attracting traffic and links (well, I guess they go hand-in-hand don't they?)....Have you ever thought about creating a fake product? If you did this right, and make it quirky or funny enough it could do great things for your traffic, especially for the holidays.

Here's one example of a fake product that went so viral that they first received a "Cease and desist order" from the National Pork Board and then they actually made the "fake" product a real product...wel not "real" really...but a fake, fake product, LOL. The fake product even got an article by a blogger for the New York Times...not bad!

I have a couple of suggestions for you. Regarding article submissions, no, it's probably not worth your time any more. Yes, guest posting would probably be way more beneficial, provided you are selective and relevant about what and where you choose to write.

Regarding social media, do you have a Google+ account? If not, establish one and then establish authorship of your Website and blog. There are numerous articles that can guide you through this process. Regarding your blog. I notice that it is a Wordpress.com blog instead of a blog built on Wordpress.org  I made the same mistake myself when I first started blogging and built a blog on Wordpress.com out of expediency. I only found out later that Wordpress.com is terrible for SEO because it is inherently limited. Last I checked you can't even install Google Analytics. If at all possible, move your blog to its own hosted domain. I'm not sure how complicated a migration from Wordpress.com to a regular Wordpress ite would be, but I can't image it's that bad. If there's an alternative to move it onto its own domain via Yahoo that might be a good possibility too.

Lastly, and this is very subjective so please take it with a grain of salt, you sound bored with your own content. If you aren't passionate about it, that lack of passion is going to come through. Perhaps it might be worth outsourcing some of the content production if it's something you don't feel a fire in your belly to do. There's just so much competition out there that if you aren't communicating passionately about your products, services or whatever it is, then it's going to be nearly impossible to persuade a complete stranger to care about it.
