Good answer Syed..I wonder when Google will actually make good on their intention to devalue exact match domains. We have seen this happen in mid-to weak keyword sets.

Opinion regarding SEO Sabotage
Hello Mozcommunity,
I would like opinions regarding potential spammy inbound links from others .
In theory you would want excellent useful content on your site that other web properties would link to in a natural way..link bait.
But what if links were pointing to your site with malicious intent. For example a competitor bombs yours site with spammy/black hat links.
This is clearly a dilemma for search engines since anyone can link to your site...even though you can block incoming with .access I don't believe many smaller in-house seo teams (or do it yourself small business owners) use Google analytics to routinely monitor referring sources.

RE: Someone is redirecting their url to mine
Himansu is right just block from via .htaccess file
This brings us a bigger issue not often discussed. Since anyone can link or redirect to your site, this creates a dilemma for search engines.
For example lets say I buy a porn site and decide to create links from that porn site to Portlandhaircuts.com, with malicious intention for that site.

RE: Blog On Domain Or Off?
If the blog is clearly on-topic with the main domain; it would help the domain authority.
for my house painting website our blog resides in a subfolder and it has really helped our organic rankings in the last 6 months. A blog is a good method to get new content up and running.

RE: Google Location - Taking Away Our National Reach?
IMHO...it is not a penalty that you are ranked lower #7 for Chicago (or any other non locale)..it is that you are more competitive in your own market to be ranked #2...essentially a boost locally.
If you had a hairdresser site ranked #3 for Austin for "hairdresser", b/c of google local, chamber of commerce link etc that same site might not be top 10 in New York city...it could be with more nyc specific relevance indicators (links, mentions).
I may have answered the wrong question....good luck.

RE: What about that stuffed footer?
For those two particular websites they have so much content that the stuffed footer although not high on design attractiveness makes the site more usable for humans.
If you see a stuffed footer with a site with less than 100 pages; then it is an SEO tactic...an outdated one at that.

RE: Searching for Quality "Follow" Back Links
Yes Remarkable Content is the key...hard to do and often hard to even pay someone to do if your niche is technical..and SEO is headed in this direction.

RE: Has anyone notice their website page rankings in Bing and Yahoo slipping lately?
I have had the exact opposite...I rank higher in google than Bing/yahoo... infact i created a dummy site with low quality links seattle-housepainting.com and it ranks in Yahoo and is not on the map for google. I am still trying to make heads and tails of the diff.
-
RE: High quality links but where do you find them?
activitysuper, I do link building research by finding a strong competitor site: I use opensite explorer with these settings
only followed links
only external links
You will find some pretty good links for free (or for a reasonable $ or effort) and you will also learn about what type of content and persona that site projects.
Good luck.

RE: Our site being outranked by competitors with lower "moz" scores - due to on-page SEO?
mozRank, DA, and PA are just measurements. Generally having higher scores for all three are a good indicator that you should rank higher...however in my own experience it took months for this site
Seattle Painting to take over the number one spot from http://www.seattlepainting.com/ for the keyword "seattle painting" despite the fact that all three metrics favored the first site; in a very lopsided way. I believe Google grandfathers in a site if it has historically remained in the top spot....a "grandfather effect"
Be patient, build good links, create compelling content.

RE: Who are my competitors
Great articulate reply Brad..what tools do you use for longtail research? Wordtracker/SEO Samurai?
-
RE: How to find keywords getting significant traffic
I discovered what Atticus is suggesting by accident with ADwords. I also use Wordtracker a great tool to discover long tail keyword combinations. Some folks use SEO Samaruai. Good Luck.

RE: Pro Dashboard Rankings Report not accurate for the UK?
Heather do you know if this is the same for other EU countries France, germany, Italy?
-
RE: There are penalties by Google for the purchase of links? If yes which are the penalties ?
excluding paying for directories; paid links if penalized will just stop giving you juice. It is unlikely a developed site will have built its authority primarily on these...so just like real white hat links that go away so do paid links. In the long run not really cost effective.

Best Practices for web layout dimensions
Hello Moz community,
I have my own ideas...but what are your opinions on best practices for landing page width size in pixels
900px
720px
What is a common pixel height for "above the fold"...my target is North America

RE: Social Media Adult Websites
Erica, good testing insight.
I could not find anything on Twitter either...I recall at SMX West one of the speakers was discussing banned content and I believe it included adult links.

RE: Separate websites for 2 products in the same business?
One subdomain would be better; so you linkbuilding efforts would help Domain Authority.
You could create two landing pages specific to the genres of art and building links with exact anchor text to each. You could even build separate Facebook pages for each.
The main page could about your company or the artist, etc.
Good luck

RE: Product Giveaways and No-Follow
Google has no requirement for a no-follow..however the savy contributor would certainly want a do-follow.
-
RE: Promoting a Facebook Contest
You are a moving company? How about some olde school outreach...
do you have a mailing list of past clients (or even better if you use a service like mailchimp)..get buzz out about the contest.
piggy back your print ads with info about the ipad2 giveaway.
Dont forget to convert vistors into page "like"s
Good luck

RE: Cost affective way to automate linkbuilding?
This is on Topic..a recent email from Robert Bruce of Copy Blogger:
By now, you know that content marketing is the new advertising.
Your readers - and those beloved search engines - highly reward those sites that consistently deliver authoritative content that is focused on a topic, industry, niche, or idea.
What does this really mean?
You've got to write.
A lot.
Sure, there's other ways to deliver the goods - audio, video, infographic design, etc.
But ultimately, the writer runs this show.
And, writing - whether in outline, script, or long form - is what underpins all other categories of media.
Writing is the cornerstone skill of all great content creation.
So, when it comes to building your business on the Internet, you're going to be spending a good amount of your time at the keyboard.
Here's a stripped-down system for getting your writing done, fast:
1. Know what you're talking about
Obvious, right?
If you're going to write authoritatively about anything, you've got to put in your time.
You've got to read relentlessly on your subject.
Study, research, painstakingly try to understand the movements and theories and motivations behind your product, service, and industry.
Stay current on, or ahead of, the news.
Get to know the players involved.
This step (which, by the way, is an ongoing process) eliminates the dreaded moments of staring out the window for ideas.
Research is writing.
2. Outline every time
If you don't know where you're going, how will you ever get there?
Don't ever start blindly typing your essay, article, or blog post without a map.
First, think through what it is you actually want to communicate.
Then, write down the skeleton of the thing.
Major points, subheads, title.
A simple outline takes the guesswork - and in many ways, the
actual work - out of the picture.
Give yourself a paved road to walk down, and then walk down that road, simply putting one foot in front of the other.
3. The secret lies in 30 minutes
I stole this technique from Eugene Schwartz, and it is the single most powerful practice for getting words on a page I've ever used.
Get a kitchen timer. Or, use the one on your smartphone.
Sit down at your desk with your notes, research, outline, and coffee.
Set that timer for 30 minutes and punch the "start" button.
DO NOT get up from your desk until 30 minutes passes and the buzzer goes off.
Here's the trick: don't try to write. Don't stress about it.
After a few minutes of sitting there, staring at the page, your cat, out the window, whatever, you'll get so bored that you'll begin to write.
When the 30 minutes is up, go do something else for a while. Then, come back for another 30 minutes of not trying.
If you get six or seven of these sessions in during a day, you'll be so far ahead of the game, you'll wonder why you ever struggled to write in the first place.
3. Write a lot
It is an immutable law of the universe.
The more you do it, the more you'll do it.
It may not get easier, but eventually you will become a writer. And that, my friends, can change your life and your business.

RE: Who are my competitors
If your goal is to rank #1...then yes wikipedia is a competitor..however wikipedia does not offer training and people will would naturally go to your site at #2. I would analyze the wiki page for links.

RE: Do you get linkjuice from a dofollow redirect (Like Yahoo! Article links)?
You are not getting juice..essentially it is a do-follow to Yahoo.

RE: Forget Duplicate Content, What to do With Very Similar Content?
If all 15 comments are written by 15 different people the content would clearly be unique...and you are fortunate to have that sort of engagement. Perhaps you could create a page where you link all the answers in one place..maybe sort out the answers..
You have probably already seen this this http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/duplicate-content
Good luck.

Need advice on diplaying content for Search
Hi every body,
I am doing landing page redesign(s).
Does any body know or can refer a content carousel that can rotate video and pictures?
The "site with images" search option result is a compelling reason to showcase pictures if your space competeiveness (showroom, merchandise, etc) can be improved with a strong image presence.
here is my main landing page
http://www.shearerpainting.com
I know there is alot of stuff, and confusing call to action, but I am looking for strategies to clean it up, clear fous on action (get bid, learn more), but allow users to see that they can dig for more content.

Video SERP question
Hello MOZ Helpers..
Sometimes video results pop up in Uiversal search..for example for "recycle paint" my video for recycle paint residing on my website shows up on a Universal SERP SEE IMAGE 1..This happens even when I use an ip mask or change local..the confusing part is why my personal version trumps my youtube version SEE IMAGE 2.
What metric(s) is Google using to rank videos, and what kind of benefit does this provide if the video points to your site vs. a video service like youtube or 5min?
I have attached 2 images with IMGUR but
search "recycle paint" to recreate

Question about web site structure
Is there an SEO advantage for individual pages to be in sub folders vs not being in a folder? Of course site managemnt is easier with folders if you have 100;s of pages...clearly a shorter URL is easier for humans to naviagte.
vs.
