I think there are different types of channels and some do have links without the nofollow attribute, but those channels aren't available for the regular person that just has two videos up.

RE: Drastic rankings drop
Hi Vjay,
You might do a site:gunshotdigital.com in Google. There's a bunch of pages that are indexed and not resolving / timing out. If I go to the blog page, then try to go to About, I get a page not found. I'm having a hard time finding any content on your site when I go in through the main page, and the site is slow to load. Have you crawled the page as Googlebot (via Google Webmaster Tools) to make sure the site is crawlable?
The meta description that Google shows when I do the site: command includes Very Irresistible Givenchy. I don't get the sense that I've landed on a page that has anything to do with an internet marketing firm, I get the sense that I've landed on a movie trailer or something, then I figure out it's a perfume ad.
In the source code I'm seeing some text for the search engines, but I'm not seeing anything as a user. Have you checked your site in a variety of browsers to make sure it acts as expected? Have you put in redirects from the old site? Have you made sure the title tags and meta descriptions are correct? Have you reviewed your robots.txt for the platform you're using?

Let's keep this thread related to the original question posted. We make it real easy to create a new question and mark it as a discussion, and that's the more appropriate place for a level-headed discussion about some of these details that don't concern the OP as much as it does the people answering the questions.
Thanks!

RE: Can you explain why the site is dropping off Google every other week?
Hi Tim,
The screenshot makes it look like this is your total traffic for the entire site, not just the traffic from Google (or rather, it's the total traffic for that profile -- I don't know what filters that profile has). First, drill down and look at just the Google Organic traffic, and make sure that it's truly the G organic traffic that's the issue, and not that there's a newsletter being sent out every other week that's generating traffic in spurts.
I'd be looking at the other sections of your Google Analytics (direct traffic, referring, etc) and see if Google Organic is the only thing that's off, or are there other things going on, and do you need to see what other things the marketing team and the developer team are doing. Also look at which pages it is that are getting traffic then dropping, that may help point you in the right direction.
Have you looked in Google Webmaster Tools to see if there are any notices there?

RE: Page crawling is only seeing a portion of the pages. Any Advice?
Ahh, I think RankSurge was referring to Google crawling, and you were referring to SEOmoz crawling? For SEOmoz, send an email to help@seomoz.org and let them know which account/campaign you're talking about, and they'll make sure Roger crawls the full site.

It's probably best to contact the help desk with an email to help@seomoz.org and get a Moz employee to look at this for you, since they'll be able to see your account details.
Thanks!

RE: How do you use SEOmoz
Hi Rusty,
With regards to the Q&A community, you are correct -- only pro members can post to the community. With your pro membership, you also get one private Q&A a month. This is a private question that goes to the SEOmoz Associates, which includes employees from SEOmoz, Distilled, and select other contractors. The Associates will answer your question, are under NDA, and that question is not made public anywhere. Even Rand goes in and answers questions. That's another big value of the Pro membership.

RE: Yahoo site explorer.
Here's a post that explains a little more about what happened, and this history. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/yahoo-sunsets-site-explorer-a-eulogy
The short answer is that for your own sites, you can view the information in Bing's tools. For other sites, there's not an exact replacement, but several alternatives (including SEOmoz's Open Site Explorer) are covered in that post.

RE: Why are so many pages indexed?
Sounds like you need to put a robots.txt on those subdomains (and maybe consider some type of login too).
Quick fix: put a robots.txt on the subdomains to block them from being indexed. Go into Google Webmaster Tools and verify each subdomain as its own site, then request removal of each of those subdomains (which should be approved, since you've already blocked it in robots.txt).
I took a quick look at lab.capacity.com/robots.txt and it isn't blocking the entire subdomain, though the robots.txt at fb.capacitr.com is.

Welcome to Q&A and SEOmoz. SEOmoz is more of a place to learn about SEO than one to drop links. Have you read the Beginner's Guide to SEO yet? RE: How do i increae my page authority
Diane,
40 articles a day sounds kind of high for developing quality articles that are the types that people would want to link to. I know some people who work 40 hours or more on a single post -- but then that post gets links, views, comments, etc. for years to come.
You may want to rethink quality vs quantity on posts, and spend more time on fewer posts.
-
RE: What would you do?
I'd also invest in a better quality microphone or better production quality for your webinars. My husband is listening to the full hour of the selecting plastics webinar, and needed to shut his office door because the audio was scratchy and the microphone was either poor quality or the person narrating was too close to the mic.
Another quick thought is to make more ways for users to request certain types of webinars. He said he saw a form to submit ideas when he requested to watch one of the webinars -- but it sounded like if none of the webinars were of interest to him that there wasn't a page to submit what he was interested in.
Are there LinkedIn groups that talk about plastics where you might have someone be able to go in and answer questions and suggest resources, as an idea for your social outlets.

RE: META Description Not Showing Up On Google

RE: What would you do?
Just purely personal opinion, but I like the idea of transcribing the webinars and/or videos. It gives me the user a way to skim through the content and see if I want to take the time to watch the video, and it gives the search engines a lot of great content to index.
However, I'm married to a mechanical engineer, and thus one of the people more likely to watch a video on plastics than on shoes. You know, I bet you might have some success with some funny pieces too like "top signs someone is a plastics engineer". My husband has created a few injection-molded pieces for our business, and now he can't just put ketchup on his hamburger without looking at the way the plastic bottle was created and add comments about the quality of the process. Can you tell me how to get back a normal dinner life?
Back to thinking seriously again for a minute. My husband and brother both own their own businesses and deal with a lot of different parts sourcing. They use Digikey a lot because of the great search engine that Digikey has for finding the part numbers that meet their design specifications. If Digikey has a somewhat reasonable price, they buy from Digikey since they're already there, and to help show some support for Digikey going to all the work to make such a good way to find parts. I don't know if this fits your site at all, but it would certainly be an example of providing something truly useful if people could come to your site and input specs and find a list of plastics that met those specs.

RE: Unexplained spikes in Google Analytics
Hi Christopher,
Take a look in GA and see if all of the visitors have the exact same version of java or flash and are coming from the same city. I've had this happen before, and on a site where I had a secondary tracking method where I could see it was just the same user.
One guess I had is that the user is in incognito mode in their browser, so you don't see a referring site and see it as a direct visit to a wide variety of internal pages.

RE: Google India Rankings Drop Suddenly
You've got a bunch of low-quality links, even before these additional 150 links from two weeks ago. The Facebook likes and shares seem a bit off. SEOmoz has a Facebook page for our fans with almost 27,000 fans, yet your page has over 40,000 likes and a couple of thousand shares.
The top inlinks (by page authority) that I'm seeing are from sites that are totally not related to weddings, and many of them are full of comment spam and have links that are no followed. You really don't have a strong link profile that shows to Google that people who are authorities about weddings, wedding planning, venues, event planning, etc. find value in your site.
I'd stop the spun article submission and the comment dropping, and spend your time on money in making sure that you have content that is valuable, then share that content with people in a related industry.
-
RE: Google India Rankings Drop Suddenly
Hi Amit,
Out of curiosity, if your page is targeting Indian wedding planning, why did you change the geographic target from India to nothing?
I'm going to sidestep the article submission and spun content for the moment and let someone else chime in on that.
I noticed that this IP is in Google with apparently the same page http://64.37.52.67/indian-wedding-planner.php. Is that you, or someone copying your site?

RE: SEOMoz Crawl Diagnostic indicates duplicate page content for home page?
Hi Perry,
In your browser, are you seeing things redirect to the double http? I think there's a bug in the crawl tools that's causing some false errors right now. Before you go work on the redirect file, could you send an email to help@seomoz.org to first make sure we're not the ones that messed up?

RE: I think I have a penalty on my domain...
Have you verified your site with Google Webmaster Tools and looked recently for any alerts about your site? Google will often tell you there if it has found something wrong, and you can get some more clues about what is happening to your site.

RE: Importance of Directories
Hi Mark,
You might want to ask this in a new question. Currently, Q&A admins are the only ones who can sort questions by most recent activity, so your comment isn't going to show for people just browsing the recent questions submitted to Q&A.

RE: Using the 'Organic Traffic Data ' feature.
Hi!
You shouldn't need the client's username and password. Ask the client to add your Google Account to their list of accounts authorized to view their Google Analytics data. You then give your Google Account info to SEOmoz and it'll be hooked up that way.
Does that help?

RE: URLs getting re-directed to double http:// URLs
Hi,
I do believe this is a bug with the SEOmoz software and that your site is fine. Could you please email help@seomoz.org and open up a ticket there so they can help track this down? Sadly, Q&A is a separate system and I can't auto-magically move this thread over. Thanks so much, and sorry for the problem.

RE: Advice on importing content please to keep page fresh
I'd step back and think "what would you do for your users if the search engines didn't exist". Don't make your sites quite so reliant on the search engines. Make them sites that people want to go to and return to even if the search engines didn't exist.
Stick with writing your own content and not duplicating across sites. I'd also really worry about importing content using Google News, as much of the news you find there is likely to be copyrighted.
What about conducting interviews with the workers at that airport and finding out what the best place to eat is? Where is the shortest security line? What is the secret to easy parking? When is the best time of day to catch a flight? There's a lot of things you could do to make that section have content that nobody else has.
-
RE: Search engine friendly URLs
Hi Limens,
It is certainly fine to use a subdirectory, and can really make sense to help organize your content. It's also helpful in your analytics if you want to see who went to the blog area of your site versus the product area of your site.
It would help to know a little more about your site, but I would choose neither of the above. I'd actually go with something like domain.com/cooking/lasagna/. Note that I'm not including the .php. If you later switch to a different language, you won't have to redirect from php to asp or html, etc.
I wouldn't stuff your subfolder in your URL with keywords like the tasty-food in your example below. It just makes your URL longer and look a little more spammy to the human eye.

RE: Strange bounce rate trending
Could there ever have been a promotion or popup or redirect to another page that would have registered as a second page view and thus killed the bounce rate? Was GA tracking external clicks for some of that?
I'd go into GA and select one of the time frames where the bounce rate increased or dropped off, then start looking at other things. Was there a page that had a bunch of views then dropped off? Look at any clues of things that might have the same trend and help explain what happened.

RE: Best practices to add Facebook comments to wordpress blog?
Hi Noah's Dad,
I'm going to ask Jen Lopez to make a better comment on this, as she's the one who manages the SEOmoz Facebook page and has more experience than I do. I did have one thought though that by having users engage in your Facebook page you're increasing your EdgeRank on Facebook and increasing the chances that fans of your page will see your updates.
FB doesn't show an individual user updates in their feed from every person and page they follow. They've got an algorithm in there to rival the search engines that helps determine what a user sees. If there's a FB page in there where the owner is just putting announcements and no one is interacting, those announcements really aren't going to be shown to the rest of the fans of that page.
With you, you've got so many people interacting with you and posting stuff I see Noah's face every time I check my FB feed. It prompts me to click over to your FB page and see the updates from everyone else.
Just an alternate way of thinking about this, though I understand your frustration at the same time. I"m the one who manages YouMoz, and it's frustrating to see people thumb and discuss the post on FB yet not going over to our site and doing the same.
