RE: Google Search Results and Trailing Slash
Hi Scott, when did you set up your 301? If you look at the supplementary index, you'll find both your pages the one ending with the / and the legacy one.
I'm seeing that google still have the cache of you non-trailing slash page in their index since the last time they cached that page was on March 2nd. I saw that you set up correctly the 301, so it probably will be just a matter of time that google will drop the old page and leave only the new "slashed" one..

RE: If bad links are now ignored why bother to resubmit a reconsideration letter?
Hi Nevil, first of all Google WAS ignoring the low value links pointing to your site. In the past having a link was always worthwhile. The least value they may pass was 0. Actually links may pass negative value to your site and the general consensus is if the ratio of those links pointing to your site is superior to a certain threshold (about 70% although portent says it would be 50% in the future) your entire site will be considered low value and "penalized".
Also there may be the case you were buying links. Google doesn't like people trying to game their algo so you want to get away from leaving patterns which may lead google to think you may have done this. If so you'll be probably negatively flagged.
About the reconsideration request it only have effect if your site received a manual penalty from google which normally confirm that with a message in your webmaster tools of unnatural links pointing to your website. In this case you want to send google a proof that you're really trying to change the way you build your links and tried to clean every sign of bad behaviour using all the tools you have, both contacting those sites to remove low value links and if not possible to disavow them.
This is to simplify a lot a widely more complicated scenario where many factors can act. Also you may be affected by Panda (as you said a number of low value pages are dragging your site down in rankings) in this case you want to get rid or improve those pages, but when this comes to links is a Penguin matter. People tries to get rid of bad links just becasue if Penguin hits you you'll need to wait until the next release (and they update very few times by now) until your site will see the light again.
Hope this helps clarify your doubts.

RE: Is paid content a good or bad thing
I know that this may be off topic but I would like to spend two more words on this
Just wondering how google would know the difference.
Try to move your focus away on humanizing Google. Google doesn't mind if you've REALLY paid or not for a content, don't think that if someone stops you in the street and ask you for a link for 5$ google may be aware of that, because it doesn't and I think that it also doesn't care about the REAL truth.
Google only cares about what IT thinks. Even if your link is natural and free, if it comes from a link network which sold links but in your case not, then you've paid that link too. Google is a private entity, which plays on its own rules, not bad nor good but just its own rules
Bear in mind that Google is not human, it's not under the human law of being truth when evaluating links, condemning the paid ones after demonstrating that they've been paid showing an invoice as a proof.
So when you analyze your backlinks (or trying to achieve new ones), try to understand if those links may be paid or not under google eyes not yours.
About being paid for a review you can create good content even being paid, just say to the one who's paying you that you will be writing a review but not publishing their content. You'll use their services and then write a review, so you're compelling and writing soemthing really useful for both users and google.

RE: Changing content in a well established page.
I think that you may consider tweaking a little your site however it depends on how bad are you ranking for the new term and how much traffic you think that new term will give you.
If you're ranking in first position of page 2 for the new term, maybe just modifying a little the h1 of your page you'll still maintain the old rankings but achieve an important increaase for the other term. But if you need to make many changes to the page to achieve better ranking which wil give you maybe 5 more visits a day, is really worth risking your old rankings?
Moreover, how optimized are your competitors? If your competitors are nto so heavily focused on Ofallon lawn care, maybe you may lose some strength on that exact term to achieve bettere results for the other.
It really depends on any particular case, if your competitors are strong and a slight cahnge may let you lose 3 position from top rankings, I won't risk at all. But it's up to you on how you consider you may improve your total traffic and exposure.

RE: Google adwords book 2013
When you're trying learn something which is basically online don't focus on books the first paragraph goes out of date when you end writing the last one.
Google has a lot of documentation on its own product, take the google certified professional course and evne if you don't take the exam you'll learn a lot!

RE: Is anyone able to check this 301 redirect for errors please?
Hi Vac, send me a private message and in m y free time I'll be glad to help you, if I can condense the redirects in just one or two rules I'll definitely do that. However I think you don't have to redirect all your 404s. (further reading here)
It's natural for a site to have 404s you need to redirect only pages which are actually going elsewhere (as the redirect term indicates), for expired content or not available pages, you'll better create a customized 404 page to help UX on your site.

RE: Should blogger award badges/links be nofollowed?
I still remember the old videos from Matt Cutts about widgets marketing. The issue is that many people have overused that strategy to squeeze over optimized anchor texts behind the widget, so many people ended up having a link pointing to a site without any editorial willingness to do this.
Matt Cutts wasn't against widgets per se but against the lack of a clear user intent to link to a site. Widgets and badges can still be used if used right. Have a look at TRIP which is still very highly widgets oriented.
If you create the article and offer a badge to embed on the food bloggers websites with a link back to the article I think it will be fine, as the badge should say something like
TOP 2017 food blogger as mentioned on domain.com, check it out!
and the link will point to the article where you're featuring them. I think it's natural and useful as it clearly states what's the purpose of the badge. A different thing would be if you try to squeeze multiple links or if you try to send users to another page of your website to try to boost it's rankings.
Do things correctly and no issues will arise.

RE: Is paid content a good or bad thing
Hi loopyal, sorry for my bad english maybe I got you confused.
I'm exactly saying what you state above, even if someone pays you in the street, google may know it's been a paid link, but not because they got a radar on all of us but just because you've replicated a process which get your content recognizedas a paid link.
You're doing great on studying about who're you're linking because bad neighbours which are linking you may create or not issues but surely if you're linking to a low quality site this will give you problems.
About the site you're speaking, what I recommend is to create a valuable post for your users. If that site is in your nihce and you think they may give a valuable service to your users why not writing about them? And if you get paid is better. But beware I'm not encouraging on having content from them and publish it, but evaluate their product, ask for free accesses, make a REAL review. In that sense this review will be helpful focusing on your users and their interests. They're your "clients" and you have to always think about them, sorry if I got misunderstood I'm not saying it's easy, but just that sometimes we complicate the picture asking on how google can recognize a paid link, because they don't; they just recognize the apparel of that link which is following the same structure of paid ones, so even if it's not paid you may be penalized too.
In short. If the site writing you is a good site, with a good product, offers you to use their product, write a content about them and link to them if you find their product useful, I don't think it would be a bad thing linking to them. Just try to have the possibility of writing about their service in the most free way.

RE: Create a link or redirect?
Hi Mike, Sorry for my lastest answer it seems I've overlooked an article from last february which states that the value lost in a redirect is the same you lose in a link (here), so about the value both B and A will give you the same seo value (more or less).
The choice will depend on which page will return the best UX. If you think that the user may find valuable the video they're seeing I'll leave that video there and link to product or service related. If you think that the video is really outdated and you'll better get rid of it, so 301 it to the service/product page.
Hope this helps!

RE: CPC or CPM for Google Display Network?
It really depends on which are your purposes. 99% of the tiem remarketing campaigns are pointing to direct response goals. In that sense it may be best to use CPC bidding to better calculate your ROI.
If your remarketing campaign are for branding purposes then a CPM may be the best way to be sure your ad is getting the highest exposure possible.
I think that CPC is the best model in terms of ROI calculations, just depends if you have catchy banners with your phone/branded so you want them to be shown as much as possible or if you have text links pointing to your best converting page.
Moreover. I remember that google translates CPC bids into eCPM ones when competing which means that if your CTR is really low you may risk of paying even more than by bidding with CPM. I can't reckon the exact formula, maybe someone can help here, but I remember that if your CTR is lower than 0,10% you may consider CPM since you're paying much less for 1 click than for a thousand impressions. (need more insight on this)

RE: Is anyone able to check this 301 redirect for errors please?
Hi Vacbag, just one question, why do you have so many
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
[.................]</ifmodule>First if you have the rewriteengine On (and you should, because if not your redirect won't work at all) at the top of your htaccess, you don't need it in every ifmodule.
If you use the rewritebase rule, use it on top so ti applies to all the rules, without repeating over and over. Maybe I'm seeing jsut a bunch of your code, but I don't see the added value of having so many ifmodules...

RE: Duplicate Legal Content
Hi Nikhil, it's normal that you're worried about this kind of things, that's one of the consequences panda got into this market. It's good that you worry about it, there two different approaches to this: try to trick it or understand it and add some real value to that content. This issue is not only in your niche. Think about books, films and lyrics of songs. You can't change them, howeveryou can add something to make that content more useful for google to le t you rank for it.
I'm not a lawyer but I'll try to make an example. The first result will be the official result then you may write an article which takes that law and then add some bullet points of the main aspects of that law, then the related laws, adding bolds, commentaries and things like this. You won't be first but you'll start building your brand as the site giving real value added to that laws, something that some people may think you're valuable and google too.
Don't worry about duplication in this case, as I said before, lyrics sites got a lot of that content and they're not duplicates, try to open your page to more keywords than only the text of that specific law.
I hope that would be useful.

RE: Penguin & Panda: Geographic Penalities?
There are many factor which influences a site's ranking in one region or another.
Google is heading toward personalized results based on user location, but that's no panda or penguin issue.
Some things to consider are:
- the location of your hosting server
- the tld of your site
- the location and tld of your linking sites
- the location you set up in your gwtools or in your buiness page
- the content of your site, if it's english it may be more british focused or american
- and other ranking factors which only google knows

RE: Figuring Out the Source of "direct traffic" by looking at landing page parameters
Hi Will, I imagine you (or your client) will have full control on the email vendor. In that case you may ask them to add to each link the utm tags which will help GA to recognize correctly that traffic.
My recommendation is to add to each link the following:
- utm_source=newsletter
- utm_medium=email
- utm_campaign=(the_month_you_sent_the_newsletter)
- utm_content=(the portion of the ad where the click so you can see which parts of the ad performs the best)
That would be enough, but you still have the utm_term available where you can insert any other thing you may want to track.
Hope this helps!

RE: Is it worth adding schema markup to articles?
It depends on which articles are you creating. If you're writing a guide about an event you may find useful marking up localization, and dates of the event they will be showing in the serps too.
Also if you have user rating your content with reviews you'll find that interesting, the extrastars are always a ctr booster.

RE: SEO beginner- How to decide what keyword to go after?
Hi Sung, first of all I recommend you to avoid one term keywords, look more to keyphrases. Look at what people normally add to the entrepeneur keyword to make their searches, for that you may use the adwords keyword tool. Expand your list of keywords as much as you can and then refine it removing the not related ones. You need to spend a lot of time in it because that will be the base of your entire work in the future.
After you got the keywords which more interests you look at the seomoz keyword difficulty tool. That may give you insight of which keyword will be the easier compared to the volume it has. Than if you still find those keywords are still too much competititve try to extend those ones with the third term. In that way you'll find which are the best kws to start with.
Remember that when you start achieving value to some longer keywords you're still getting value for the shortest combination, and in the future you may achieve some authority and start seeing your site ranking for the most competitive keywords too.
As a general rule, start getting market share in the bottom lines, huge brands normally leave unseen lower trafficked keywords, they achieve traffic because everyone looks a t the top keywords only. Then you'll start growing from the bottom.

RE: Optimal ratio of different categories of link
Hi Luke, if you're looking for a 10%-30%-XX% ratio of links I think you won't ever find nothing regarding this.
Even if you'll find that I recommend you to not follow that guide just because: only google knows how much weight they give to each link and also because google can change their algo on a weekly or daily basis, but your seo strategy should be long term based.
So in that sense I strongly recommnend to be just natural. If your site is good you probably see it in blogs, directories, other sites, and also on comments, forums etc etc. Everything is good if it's balanced and natural. Try to avoid any kind of pattern and let things flow up trying to avoid huge unnatural increases.
Also you may consider seeing how your best competitors are doing and try to follow their same strategy.

RE: GA Regex Help Needed!
this site has a good syntax table which summarizes all the parameters you will need. http://www.regular-expressions.info/reference.html
mainly you want to use the OR parameter like(this|this2|this3|thisN) also wild card like (.*) may be helpful.

RE: Shutting down a site, where do I 301 it?
Hi Spence, IMO you may have two situations:
- if the old international sites were in other languages you may consider redirecting them to the same language version on the main site
- if the old domains were focused on specific markets (countries in this sense) you'll better point the 301 the to the specific directory pointing to a specific country (if it was domain.es focusing on spanish users point to domain.com/spain/)

RE: Please Can someone look at this - Restaurant in Totnes
Hi James, I'm seeing that your not focusing only on restaurant keywords since your business ismore htan just a restaurant. I think that you're not achieveing high results due to how much that keyword is diluted on your homepage.
1st: you have a page made for restaurant keyword http://theseatroutinn.co.uk/Restaurant.html use that. Try to enhance that page to achieve better links and better rankings
2nd you always use the same title: "The Sea Trout Inn in South Devon, Near Totnes - Luxury Bed and Breakfast and Restaurant - XXXXX" The xxx part seems to me the only one you change. Try to make shorter titles (normally less than 60 characters) and don't go after everything in all pages, but focus. In the restaurant page you may think aboutchanging it to: "Luxury Restaurant in Totnes | Eat in the South Trouth Inn". In the meta description you may try something more attractive including a call to action like "Do you want an enjoyable lunch in Totnes? Try the south throuth inn a luxury restaurant in totnes"
In that way you'll have more different titles in you website and pages highly focused which won't cannibalize rankings from one to other.
-
RE: Site www.accendomarkets.com ?
first of all try to include those terms in your pages. You're already doing good (rank 6 for cfd provider) without even mentioning that keyphrase in your title neither in the whole content of your mostly relevant page http://www.accendomarkets.com/our-products/cfds/
use titles, h1 h2 and meta desc, without spamming them but try with a few tweaks and see what you achieve only with internal optimizations.

RE: GA Regex Help Needed!
you got many wildcards bur this one is quite straightforwardif you write:
/(.*)ward/ --> you're matching /ward/ and any thing which contains that word at the end like /forward/
if you write /(.+)ward/--> you're forcing that should be something before so you're takin /forward/ but not /ward/

RE: Send noindex, noarchive with 410?
hey Tony you made it in the right way, you added the error code + the noindex. However google won't drop your page from the index until it crawls it several times.
You can do this: first of all be sure that you have no links pointing to that page then:
- see in GWT if the page is showing as a 404 and when it will disappear from GWTools errors
- or go to GWT and ask google to remove it from the index. This is the fastest way, and google asks you to add a noindex or return a 404 to make this action, so actually you're more than fine to do that, however it depends on the volume of 404s you have this may be a huge and repetitive task to do.
-
RE: Please Can someone look at this - Restaurant in Totnes
Hi James, I agree with Keri, the beginners' guide is a great content developed by the seomoz guys. If you want to achieve the success, you have to prepare yourself, and know at least the key elements of a page because there you'll want to include your most important keywords.
- title: text shown on top of you page and in blue in google result page. You want there some keywords and at the beginning if possible
- meta description: that's the short descriptive text below the title in google serps. You need to write compelling descriptions to attract users' attention and have your keyword bolded so to improve the CTR
Fix those two elements, try to enahcne the density of your restaurant in totnes keyphrase in your restaurant page and you'll be near the success

RE: 301 redirect a old site that has been "dead" for a while?
Hi Ray, unfortunately there's no clear science on how to avoid any possible issue on your migration however I understand your strategy.
You would like to create a landing page which reflects the old sites name so google would still match backlinks branded anchors with what it finds in your site. You may try to put a couple of mentions of the old brand so you'll achieve the same: Google will see link pointing to brand X and finds correlation with the old page and the new one since there are mentions of the brand X in the new one too.
Hope this helps, I'd like to know your achievements on this!

RE: Google Analytics Goals - Button Tracking
well it's easy to explain it here without reading a full article.
you have to use Javascript onclick event tracking, which is essentially a way to say to GA to register data overtime your event is triggered.
on the button action code you can add the following onclick event:
ga('send','event','category','action','opt_label', opt_value,{'nonInteraction':1})
You have to change the category, action, opt_label and opt_value as you wish, considering that the last two are optional. For example you want something like this:
ga('send','event','form sent','click','[URL]', 5)
more info here on the official GA site: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/events it's really clear, if it is not, it means you may want to double check with your dev, or further study Ga documentation about events tracking.

RE: IP redirect possible SEO issues?
IP redirect may be tricky since you'll have to maintain that information up to date and be sure that it is working properly. Also there may be users who even staying in a uk ip wants to see the american or eu site, and having the possibility of using the hreflang to set up correctly every site I'll change that strategy to:
- instead of redirecting via IP, I'll consider using that info to show a banner which states, "hey we've seen you're in UK, click here to see the uk version of the site, you'll find many offer based on your country!" (or maybe something shorter than this
- use the hreflang tag to specify to engines which language is optimized for each site, in that way google won't give you duplicate content issues and it will also make the right site ranking depending on the country.
In the short time I'll also give more focus on the .com site because it ahs the widest audience and because it's the most common TLD used for commercial sites. However in the long term you may want to have specialized teams which will make this differences even stronger with an highly focused marketing activity.

RE: Am I blind or has Google finally shut down its "Related Searches" option?
Hi Dana, that would be really sad I use related searches a lot to find good related terms to expand my keywords. I still see them in the bottom of the serp.
Maybe is because I'm in Spain but I see both in Google.com and google.es
-
RE: How far can I push rel=canonical?
Hi all, I think that your alternatives would be:
- one big site with all the thematics. In that way all users can access all content without leaving the site, no need for noindex no need for canonicals since you won't have dupe content
- three sites with specialized articles in each one. You may change slightly your design to give the user the feeling that the site is different but in the same network. Then you may interlink those sites as useful resources. Not optimal since they'll have a huge interlinking,
- as you said noindex the non canonical article. Remember that the noindex tag will prevent indexation not crawling because google will need to crawl your page to know that it should not index it. So you may add meta "noindex, nocache, follow" in the header and be sure that the juice is still flowing in your site.

RE: What is SEO to you
I think that SEO grew alongside the search engines. In the first period the SEOs were geeks programmers which tried to achieve top rankings spammin here and there. both internally and then externally.
Google seemed a machine to game to achieve your top positions. Now I think that Google helped a lot in giving to this job a further qualification. As they evolved their algo we evolved our knowledge in a game which is starting to move from the pure development to a larger integration with the marketing side of our job.
SEOs are everyday more marketing oriented, integrating a lot their job with pr building relationships with other webmasters. As you said I see SEO as an enhanced art where technical knowledge melts with marketing skills.
A good SEO is a marketing artist imo.
-
RE: Is it good to have a few outbound links to good authority sites?
To enhance your domain authority you'll need them to link to you not the opposite. You may want to earn the links they have or just have them linking to you.
However if they're related and as Jesse said linking to them may enhance the UX, it's always a good idea to link to official and authoritative sites, it makes your website more natural because the nature of the web is a "web" of sites interlinked among them.
Summarizing it won't help your authority directly but it will help you look better to both your users and I think to bots too.

RE: SEO for ecommerce site. Where do I start?!
Hi Jens, first of all welcome to the wonderful world of SEO were nothing is 100% sure but everything is changing and worth testing, you'll be learning by making mistakes, if you don't make mistakes you're not doing anything. Many times is better to make mistakes because the road to the right path is to know where you shouldn't go avoiding bad practices.
Having said this I think you should start on organizing your inventory. Start by creating categories around your best products. Try to create new categories around trafficked keyphrases and try to achieve traffic to your listings. After having organized it create a really usable website with filters and microdata which will help users find reviews on your products making for them easy to choose which one is the best and in whatever moment be able to buy it in the shortest funnel possible, every click they need to do will make them think about giving up the buying cycle.
On the prodcut pages try to build easy and clear title the same product name wills tart delivering traffic by itsefl if it's clear what you're selling.
Also try to use a secure payment to make users feel safe when buying on your site.
Nowadays it helps a lot morehaving a really good onsite seo than build a lot of links to improve your visibility to achieve traffic. After you build a good site, improve your contents, descriptions, photos, reviews, filters, and you'll start achieving some links, you may start consider building some quality links and social media mentions as you may have read in the seo guide seomoz provides. TRy to avoid paid links and use only highly themed pages related to your website.
Adwords may also help you delivering traffic faster but try to optimize a lot your spent to make your first sales and help your site survive until your seo improves!
Hope this may help you starting!

RE: "Same Server Related Niche" Penalty?
I don't think there is a real penalty for having realted sites in a same hosting. Another thing is that you have plenty of websites built using scraped content.
What I mean is that if you create 5-10 hand made domains you should have problems, it really depends on the quality of your content and how much you care of your website, but this applies to them even if you plan putting them on different servers.
-
RE: Do we need to Disallow profiles from discussions or forums?
I would normally say yes, but it really depends on how good your forum is. Sometimes people like to do reputation marketing and if the site is authoritative you want to show for your name's queries that you are part of an important website with lots of contributions. But if your profile pages are not that relevant or nice or provide any interest to your users, I don't see why you'd like to let google index and serve them
-
RE: Someone is building anchor text links with child porn keywords..help :-(
Hey Circa, this may be negative seo from a competitor it may be spammers or fishers and so on, it's difficult to know.
Your drop may depend on that depending on how much those links are part of your whole backlinks portfolio, as generalzod said, if you have a 75% of your links like those one they could have hit you if they're kind of 10% you may have different issues there, since every site has some porn or spam links pointing to them and google knows that.
If I were you I'll buy a subscription to ahrefs or majestic seo, get all your links, find the crappy ones, and ask for removal. then the ones which remains can be disavowed.
After that wait for a couple of days and submit a reconsideration request to google saying them you've also submitted a link disavow. Explain them what happened in details.
To prevent this in the future you can use ahrefs/majestic new/lost links feature so you can watch which links you're acquiring everyday and if there's something wrong you can ask for removal /disavow them.
Hope that helps!

RE: Long tail keyword research tool
Hi ZUL,
Actually the most reliable one is still the adwords keyword planner, even after it's terrible merging with the traffic estimator.
Also if you already have your main keywords you may find useful http://ubersuggest.org/
OR
If you have clear which are your main competitors you can track their top keywords using http://www.semrush.com/

RE: Building High PR Links
Well if you have an high pr link which you don't trust to poitn to your site only because it's not related it's a good idea to boost the power of your backlinks.
Just be sure that you don't automatize it in a way which may get you in troubles, because you won't be able to submit disavow requests for your backlinks
Be sure that you'll judge the high pr link not only by its pr but also for their adomain age, freshness, content quality, traffic and all this qulity rates which are not just pr juice.

RE: How to solve duplicate page title & content error
mmm same number of dupe titles/content, let me think of pages with few content in them.
If you're sure that your developer didn't make any change you can:
- put a dynamic rule in your title so to have it changing based on the changing elements of the page (like appending page 2 for the second page etc)
- about the content if the duplication happens on different pages you can ask a freelancer to write some new content, but if the content appears on the same page but with some filters or pagination you may consider both: noindexing those pages, canonicalize them or simply remove the content from pages different than the first one.
- export seomoz data and find where are you missing your title(you got same info on GWT)
- the same for 404, see which pages are linking to bad urls and fix that issues. IF you're lucky you may fix more than one link if they're dinamically generated.
-
RE: Should I Parent/Child my Website Pages (need help with terminology too)
Hi Niki, I think that your strategy to maintain the url short is good, it's always best to give short urls if they're descriptive enough. Normally the best thing to do is to give to users an URL which let them understand what a page is about without clicking into it, this may be beneficial also in linkbuilding since people linking to you with your url will involve also some traffic if the linking site is thematically related.
About the structure I think that 3 categories are not that much, it really depends on how many products or child pages you have. The best thing to do is to organize them in a way which is thematically organized having all your page not more than 3-4 clicks away from your home, in that way you'll be sure that google can easily find and crawl them frequently because a page deep in your website may not be found or crawled that much.
-
RE: SEO without SEM, Social networking and advertisements
Sorry Mavvy maybe I didn't understand you, are willing to rank for SEO right? You don't need any SEM or other kind of advertising to rank good for SEO, they're different and definitely unrelated channels, even if advertising may raise your branded terms search volume.
About social, it seems that this still doesn't influence seo rankings but it will probably in the near future, so you should push your watchdog to let you use it. Btw social is useful to create a network and build relationships (in the future links) there. You can always use your personal profile to do that.
About how to rank for SEO, make a good and depth keyword research, optimize your site structure and title+metas, create good content and then go out building relationships+links!
Also if your main keywords are highly competitive start with longer ones, with less competitors, these slight variations will lightly improve the rankings of the main keywords too, so you'll start to achieve easy traffic. Normally the 1 visit keywords summed up give more traffic than the main ones, although are more difficult to track.
Hope this helps!

RE: My landing page changed in google's serp. I used to have a product page now I have a pdf?
hey Ken, yes I've used an advanced search but couldn't find any category for that product, just because that was in fact a product as you specified now) you can still maintain your pdf linked, what I recommend you is to be sure that the pdf won't cannibalize the kw for your page to rank, this by:
- modifying the title as be more descriptive
- using a link like more info on the product to link the pdf (no zyflamend kw on the anchor)
- maybe nofollowing the link to the pdf if you're goal is to not rank with the pdf

RE: I'VE DONE EVERYTHING RIGHT BUT STILL GET LOW GOOGLE RANKING
there are several things you could do on your site in order to improve it, SEO is a matter of details so start working on them
- internal links. Many of them have a blank anchor, ensure to put your keywords in there
- content. Add relevant content together with images, show 2 or 3 projects in each area and describe them with a nice attractive text
- Internal architecture. Ensure you're not just linking from the homepage down but also interlink your internal pages among them. Example: http://www.pokudesign.com/services/ why not linking to those services? Give a two lines snippet each and then link to a page for each of them.
- Backlinks. This is painful but rewarding. Get them, a bunch of quality links is fine, don't overdue this a be clean. I don't know your competitors backlinks profile but you want to ensure that you're going high quality.
- blogs. i assume those pages are yours. http://www.pokudesign.com/blogs/ why don't you integrate them in your site? Again add content, be catchy and descriptive, I'm sure you can say a lot of things about the nice things you've done, show people you care google will reward you.
that would be a starting point

RE: Some pages on my site are not linked - should I add a Visual SiteMap?
an html sitemap is always a good idea to be sure that google will easily find all your pages, however if you structure well your website being sure that all the pages are not more than 3 clicks away from your home google wille asily find them all.

RE: Dash or vertical bar in titles?
I think there's no agreement on that, it normally depends on personal choice. Normally I prefer to use all the separators just to make the site a little different and don't use always the same structure. However if I need to choose one I'll use user experience and readability for it, and personally I find the pipe much more readable than the hyphen just because separates better the sentences, However you may use a combination of both if the two portion of text are related.
Examples:
- Guide to Ibiza - Boat trip to Ibiza | IBIZATRAVELS.COM
- Hotel Ibiza | Bars and Restaurant in Ibiza
The first sentence (the last part is just for branding if you want although I don't love so much having the domain in the title), got an hyphen in the first part because boat trip seems to clarify which part of the guide to ibiza we're speaking about. The site name is not related that's why I put a pipe. In the same way I separated the two parts in the second option just because they're both about tourism in ibiza but they're not co-related in this case.

RE: When doing internal linking back to your home/index file what is the best coding course of action?
linking to the http://www.domain.com is the same as linking to / just develop the way which best suits your needs. The most important thing to do to avoid duplicate issues is to set the 301 to redirect everything to the same page thing you've already done so really there is no difference in that. About using the full url there's no issue on google seeing that as an external link since it's poiting to the same domain. hope this helps!

RE: 404 Error to homepage
As Tom, and webmaster central blog states 404s are a natural part of any website. They don't hurt you directly.
Redirect to home is not always a good idea, don't forget the real meaning of redirect: "a content which is permanently/temporary moved to another address.
If the content you are redirecting has just disappeared try to enhance the user experince: what is the advantage for an user looking for a product to reach your homepage? it will only raise your bounce, try to create a customized 404 which give to the users good alternatives to what thhey were looking for, like related products or the category where the product was.
