Hi everyone,
We've decided to move away from Disqus and use Facebook comments on one of our blogs. Our users prefer it, and we saw traffic increase when we did it on another site. My question is, will removing old comments (we have hundreds of them per post) hurt my seo? I've scoured the internet for an answer but can't find anything up to date. Old best practices said to keep old comments. What do you think?
Thanks!
My indexation number went back to normal for 2/3 sites. But for one of my sites, the number still hasn't returned to normal. Do you have any idea as to why this might be? Do you think it's a bug with Google?
WOW that's the exact date that my index number went down! That is a huge relief, but at the same time I'm still concerned that my traffic went down during that time. Thank you for sharing the video.
Thank you Dmitrii for your response.
No, our sites were not hit by manual actions, I checked out GWT for that. But yes, they do link to each other a lot and provide a very reasonable amount of referral traffic to each other. It's not necessarily a network, it's just a handful of domains that have different content, audiences and pages that happen to be owned by the same company. So no, it's not a network in the spammy sense.
But, you do provide a good point about the duplicate content and rankings. I will check those to see if it could have any affect. There was a panda refresh around this time so perhaps that added to our troubles.
Thank you for your response, Michael.
No, the site isn't down anymore. It was down for a couple of hours. We are getting traffic again, but not to the level it was at before. I have already checked the robots.txt file, but I will try the Fetch and Render suggestion as well.
Thanks!
Very curious situation. We have a network of sites. Sunday night one (only one) of our sites goes down, and since then we've seen a loss in traffic across all our sites!! Not only have we seen a loss of traffic, we also saw a loss of indexed pages. A complete drop off from 1.8 million to 1.3 million pages indexed.
Does anyone know why one site outtage would affect the rest of them? And the indexed pages? Very confused.
Thanks,
Every two months or so, I like to download the OSE list of all the backlinks passing equity to my site. I do this so I can see which spammy links I need to try and remove.
However, I see that OSE is still showing me links that I already removed...Either A) the page that is being linked to is 404-ed B) the spammy website that was linking doesn't exist anymore or C) the spammy site still exists, but the link is GONE.
Why is OSE still spidering these sites and links? Does that mean Google is still spidering these links? Should I disavow them to be safe?
Thank you!
P.S We are not experiencing any drastic drops in traffic or penalties at the moment.
Thank you, Everett! I didn't know that Answers box and Knowledge Graph are two different things. I'll take a look at the blog post you linked to.
Thank you for your response, Martijn. I was thinking the same thing. Everything I've read thus far about SameAs speaks to connecting bios and social profiles.
Thank you, Patrick!
I am trying to get my content in the Google Knowledge graph. Everything I've read thus far about Knowledge Graph tells us how to get in for branded terms (e.g. company name or your own name). But I am looking for ways to have my content be indexed and shown in Google graph.
For example, if you search for "mayonnaise for hair" you will see Knowledge graph show us a snippet from an article on RealSimple.com. **How do you get your content to show here? **
I've been reading a lot about SameAs markup, but it seems to only help for branded terms, so companies can have a knowledge box for their brand. But does it help for non-branded keywords?
I appreciate any advice. Thanks.
Hello Moz Experts,
I am fighting for one of our sites to be mobile optimized, but the fight is taking longer than anticipated (need approval from higher ups). What happens if my site is not ready by April 21st? Will it take long to recover, like Penguin? Or, will the recovery be fairly quick?
Say I release a mobile version of my site a week later. Then Google will have to reindex it and rank me again. How long will that take before I regain my traffic?
Thanks,
Thanks for responding. I think you're absolutely right, we need to take those precautions and then deal with the bad backlinks. I will try the disavow tool as well. Thanks!
Thank you for your response! I will try the disavow tool.
Hi Ray-pp,
In this instance, no, a bot is not creating spam on MY site. Someone is linking to my site from an external, spammy site. So yes, I am "wondering how to combat external forum threads that link back to your website, but are spammy." As you put it.
You mention using the Google disavow tool...but I have read that it can be dangerous to use. Would a case like this really warrant use of Google disavow? And back to my original question, can I use meta noindex, no follow to block bad link juice?
I have a forum thread on my site that is completely user generated, not spammy at all, but it is attracting about 45 backlinks from really spammy sites. Usually when this happens, the thread is created by a spammer and I just 404 it. But in this instance, the thread is completely legit, and I wouldn't want to 404 it because users could find it useful.
If I add a meta noindex, nofollow tag to the header, will the spammy pagerank still be passed? How best can I protect myself from these low quality backlinks? I don't want to get slapped by Penguin!
**Note: I cannot find contact information from the spam sites and it's in a foreign language.
Thank you, Eyepaq.
It didn't crash our Google usage here at work, so I'm assuming it works a little differently than Rank Tracker. Sounds like it works just like Google analytics would, but I have no evidence to back that up.
I have a blogger site that is adding parameters and causing duplicate content. For example:
I decided to implement a canonical tag on these pages pointing to the correct version of the page. However, for the parameter ?m=0, the canonical keeps pointing to itself.
Ex: www.mysite.com/?m=0 The canonical = www.mysite.com/?m=0
So now I have two canonicals for the same page. My question is if I should leave it, and let Google decide, or completely remove the canonicals from all pages?
I recently installed Linkstant after reading lots of great reviews. I'm eager to use the new tool, but I would like to know HOW it works. Does it send Google queries??
Just to give you some background info, I was recently burned by Rank Tracker...after using the tool it killed any access to Google and ruined a Google+ event that our company had planned. I do not want this to happen again, so I'd like to know how exactly it works.
Thanks!
Thanks for the response, Dan! You reaffirmed what I was thinking. Even if we get the proper rich snippets markup implemented it will be hard to rank above Youtube.
Phil, do you have any other reasons why it "strategically makes little sense"?
My website has several videos, mostly product reviews and tutorials. I'd like for these videos to show in the SERPs with rich snippets, but I am hosting them through Youtube. What is your experience with Youtube hosted videos? Do they generate rich snippets? Or will Google always rank the Youtube video over your web page?
I know this thread is very old, but still very relevant to me today. My OSE report is showing sites that do not have any link pointing back to my site. I checked both the page and the source code and cannot find any evidence of a link. Some of these are low quality sites, and I don't want Google to punish me for being linked from them. Should I be worried of a penalty if OSE is still indexing them? Appreciate any response.
I recently noticed that all the plus ones on our company Google+ page disappeared. Now there's only Followers and Views. Does anyone know what happens to the plus ones?
Thank you, Jane. It appears we are able to restore our comments, but it's good to know that it's not a negative factor.
I've noticed a recent drop in organic traffic and a slight dip in rankings. When I looked at who replaced us in the top spots, I noticed text heavy, in depth articles. We produce many articles in the slideshow format. Do you think this is the reason our rankings dropped?
Thank you for your responses. In this instance, I don't think we had any "high authority" comments, mostly just reactions from our community. However, what do you all think about the quantity of comments? Does that have an impact? For example, the more comments, the higher you will rank... Any thoughts are appreciated.
We recently installed Facebook comments into our blog and now we lost all of our old comments. Does this have any affect on SEO? Will this hurt our rankings?
Thanks!
Hi Julian,
Can you explain what you mean by "the page is using 2 URLs" ? Usually keyword cannibalization occurs when you target the same keyword on multiple pages. If Moz is showing this unticked box it is probably because it found an instance of this on your site.
I recommend limiting your keyword targeting to one page. If you want to build a lot of content around one keyword, do this carefully. Aim for long tail keywords, different variations, and support content. Example: I am targeting the keyword "dance shoes" for a page that sells "dance shoes." I want to create extra content to support this page, so I write a couple of blog posts about "how to keep your dance shoes clean" or "ways to extend the life of your dance shoes." etc.
Hope this helps.
Hi Keri,
I am also looking for schema to use for a question and answer site. The content is generated similarly to Yahoo Answers. Users will post both questions and answers and assign them categories. What schema should I use to ensure rich snippets in Google?
Thanks!
That's just it. I don't know if it's something we need to be worried about. Since the site was setup so long ago, I don't know if it was ever submitted to blog directories. I also don't know whether we have an old Feedburner feed or not, but I don't think so.
Our company started a WordPress blog about 14 years ago. It has since added a third-party forum, a user-submitted photo gallery, and a huge database of searchable products. We also have almost 4000 posts.
With all that said, Google Alerts often lists our content under blogs rather than websites. Sometimes it shows up in both? Does anyone know what criteria Google uses for determining the type of content, and how we can signal to them that we are a website?
