RE: How can you add meta discription for your homepage in yoast wordpress SEO?
Hi,
Depending on your configuration some times this is located not in the Yoast SEO plugin settings under title and tags like Wiqas suggested, but it is found on the page where you edit your homepage title, content, etc.
It would have the following box on your home page edit screen
Hope this helps!

RE: Should I delete youtube videos when moving to Wistia (or other on-site platform)?
Second Phil on this one: "You can find that YouTube will outrank your pages, which splits your traffic and view count, thereby damaging your SEO" This is the major issue here.

RE: W3C My site has 157 Errors, 146 warning(s) Is it an issue?
"On the other URL checker you gave me the site scored 3 F's & 3 A's but i am not sure whether that is good or bad."
I use that test mainly to test the load times 1st and reload times, here are your results:
http://www.webpagetest.org/result/140208_3Y_B5M/
This was run for 1.5DSL connection from London, UK. 18sec and 10sec is def on the slower side, and caching could definitely help. As you want to aim for 2-5sec loads.
But roughly looking at the validation errors I didnt spot anything that would decrease your performance, in your case the performance is mostly likely not due to the validations. Again I just did a rough look through, so dont take my words for fact. Maybe others can chime in if they see something out of the ordinary with the errors.

RE: Yoast Wordpress SEO premium
Yoast Premium was primarily created for higher end support purposes. The free version should do most of the functionality of the premium the redirect portion can be supplemented with other great alternative plugins currently out there. If support is key its worth it for that.
Hope it helps!

RE: Is it me? Or is the spam getting worse on professional social networking sites?
"They should do a study on who is leaving. I bet who is leaving has a higher average rep score than the people who are stayin',"
Sadly for the investors at times its the quantity that matters vs quality of people on the network...

RE: W3C My site has 157 Errors, 146 warning(s) Is it an issue?
Hi Ash,
Most would say the validator is at times too strict or in some ways moving slower to the changing technology. A good example is doing a validation for facebook.com still yields 45 errors, and 4 warnings.
Now 156 errors may be significant, depending on the errors. But assuming your developers did a good job, those might be things that may or may not be significant. For example nytimes.com has 500+ errors. Does that mean their site is slow or broken, not necessarily. It is interesting that you are asking about this 6 months since this issue was brought up and not right then and there
The first check I would run, is actual performance check on your site here is are good options for you: http://www.webpagetest.org/
You can test various browsers, internet connections, and locations, to see if the results are reasonable for your situation. Also posting your error codes here would help and one of us can help you and actually tell you if your errors are a big deal or not!
Hope this helps!

RE: Amazon RTMP S3 vs Vimeo PRO vs Wistia? (Download Protection)
Ok in this case our plan of action is to start with S3 and build a culture of protecting the content, atleast for a regular folk. After a while if analytics and tracking is of importance we will convert the necessary videos to Wistia. At least thats the plan so far.
Thanks for the input Phil.
I'm still open to other experiences with video anti-piracy for membership sites. Thanks community!
-
Amazon RTMP S3 vs Vimeo PRO vs Wistia? (Download Protection)
Context: A membership site, focused on a Russian market which is known to culturally pirate everything they see. Granted: ultimately you cannot hide video as a person can take a screen-capture/video camera method ultimately.
-
Having said that. Is it still worth going the RTMP S3 route? Vs say Vimeo and Wistia. Will it help a bit or its a technology that is dying?
-
Also with Vimeo PRO vs Wistia generally Vimeo is better value, but how is their analytics compared to Wistia (per user stats) if possible?
-
Vimeo is a very popular, therefore downloaded 3rd party apps exist plentifully, is Wistia's platform unique to Vimeo in terms of its embed format if its same format this means that the commonly available tools as for Vimeo will work for Wistia, how ever if its different, and less popular as RTMP S3 is in this case less tools are available for it. Is that the case for Wistia?

RE: Will Google discount new gTLDs?
Is the perceived authority of the old-time TLDs something worth investing in? Or will this fizzle away over time as the new gTLDs flood the market?
.com mainly, but also .org (and in some cases .net) have survived the test of time in terms of authority/brand/image.
Many other TLDs were introduced prior to .PRO and the above are still highly sought after.
In terms of financials, as in "The .org will probably end up being about 10x the price of the .pro." from an SEO standpoint its a fair game, so if you can invest the savings from a .pro (assuming significant if you are paying high bucks for a .org that you are buying) you can use that for SEO.
Hope this helps

RE: Requesting New Custom URL for Google+ Local Business Page
I was just "offered" is a good word, a custom domain by Google last week. At first I thought great let me choose my username that I like (+vmialik) and use for things like Facebook, etc. to keep the consistency. But Miriam and Mike Blumenthal are right when they say Google did not give me an option to customize my domain. But having a full name as a custom url at least for my name works well. For businesses and organizations, I understand its a different story, with DBA's etc.
Maybe in the future ... who knows.
Hope this helps

RE: Now that Google is no longer publicly displaying Page Rank updates, how will this effect Moz's ability to calculate DA and PA?

RE: Missing Dublin Core
It is used by some SEO reports like http://www.woorank.com, I dont believe Moz report has anything on it.
It is not used by Google, but it seems that it is still relevant to some industries, and they say "some search engines might still use it" So, it is applied to be on the "safe side"

RE: Now that Google is no longer publicly displaying Page Rank updates, how will this effect Moz's ability to calculate DA and PA?
"But what I was getting at was, did DA and PA scores take publicly available Page Rank information into account when compiling the scores?"
No they did not, Page Rank was not as great of a metric to track to begin with.
UPDATE I have no sure way of knowing if they did so in the past or starting out, maybe we will get an actual answer from a Moz staff if it was part of dozen of other factors. But its highly unlikely.
-
RE: Now that Google is no longer publicly displaying Page Rank updates, how will this effect Moz's ability to calculate DA and PA?
Domain Authority is Moz's calculated metric for how well a given domain is likely to rank in Google's search results. It is based off data from the Mozscape web index and includes link counts, MozRank and MozTrust scores, and dozens of other factors.
(source: http://moz.com/learn/seo/domain-authority)
At this point because its been atleast 6mo since last PR was updated, DA and PA is more accurate.
"would that still give me equivalent information on the strength of that domain and thus make a judgement on whether it will be a worthy site for a guestpost"
-In my opinion it has always given a more valid metric of authority and strength than PR.
The only downside and to comment to "how close is now looking at Moz's metrics (ie. a third party company) to the info on PageRank that was being updated by Google themselves"
Mozscape is not as large as the Google index, but it is pretty big and significant now.
Hope this helps

RE: I am looking to build an informational site that consists of a few landing pages. What kind of platform would you recommend?
That sounds fine. I would choose either google apps or zoho for custom email.
I have not heard of Hostasaurus up to this point.

RE: 100's of .info links pointing to my site
It is recommend you try to get in touch with the webmasters of the sites before going down the disavow route.
I second this as well. Disavow is not a plan A, but an plan B, C, D. In the process of link cleaning

RE: .cn domain vs. .com/cn/ folder structure
Hi Jonathan,
Tom has a great response here: "In terms of Baidu, having a chinese domain, like .cn or .com.cn and having Chinese servers certainly helps - but it is not a necessity in terms of ranking on the search engine.
However, proving that you have a Chinese presence, specifically a physical Chinese address, can be a real game-breaker, especially for PPC. You basically need to have a Chinese registered address to advertise on Baidu for PPC and Paid search. Your application will be halted until you do."

RE: I am looking to build an informational site that consists of a few landing pages. What kind of platform would you recommend?
Most regular hosts do that give you for example Plesk, cPanel. these generically include Bluehost, Dreamhost, MediaTemple.net (there are countless of other great hosting options here it is just some that have had great experiences or heard of others). These are managed but generally allow you full control. There are also many unmanaged servers like Linode where you install mail servers from ground up, but I am not sure that is what you are looking for.
Again even WPEngine can have membership sites, it is just that it might take more time to set up as WPEngine is a bit picky in a good way to keep you from making mistakes earlier on. But if its for a informational site aka content site, and you have not yet worked with Wordpress. I would choose WPEngine. The benefits in my mind out way the cons of using gmail, or hosting custom email somewhere else.
Hope this helps

RE: I am looking to build an informational site that consists of a few landing pages. What kind of platform would you recommend?
yea its by far one of the better hosting solutions starting out. It has its limits that are really there to keep you from making mistakes. If you are not taking Wordpress to the extremes of an eCommerce solution or a membership site, I would say definitely go with them. I mention that because some (few, and very customizable) of the plugins are not supported or do not work great with WPEngine off the bat. They will go far and above to protect and speed up your content if that is important to you. Also they do not allow you to create an email server like most hosting solutions that give you Plesk or cPanel access allow. Which is a pro or a con depending on how you look at it. Again its an amazing host. If you custom email is important and you do not want to use Google Apps or Zoho for email, try MediaTemple.net DV solution is also great option. Although the future might be iffy, as they have recently been bought out by GoDaddy. But so far I use them for some clients and them have been great. Again there are many great hosts out there, but I comment on the ones I have used. Bluehost, and Dreamhost have also been good with Wordpress but not to the extent of WPEngine and their expertise with Wordpress like Matt has mentioned.
-
RE: I am looking to build an informational site that consists of a few landing pages. What kind of platform would you recommend?
.org is a self hosted which gives you 100% control with plugins like Yoasts SEO plugin that was mentioned. .com is free version that is great for mom blogs etc
-
RE: I am looking to build an informational site that consists of a few landing pages. What kind of platform would you recommend?
If you are going for content and landing pages. Its hard to beat Wordpress (.org not .com). The search engines seem to love how Wordpress platform is set up for content publishing, and the community to support this platform is huge and one of the nicest around. Its proven to scale well with larger news sites as well.
Hope this helps

Here are the perks for a paid moz account: http://moz.com/perks it doesnt look like getlisted is part of the perks.

RE: Google Places and Google Local
That is correct. There have been cases of pages being connected without a local Google + page, and this was done with a now available phone calling to Google available to small business owners: https://support.google.com/places/ Its worth a shot, even though its not guaranteed.

Good question, or questions. As you are asking about keyword research, landing pages, ranking, and conversion/email collection.
For a general overview you might want to read moz beginner seo guide and the advanced seo guide.
Also I do want to address one important part that moz can actually help with, and its not their tools per se, but the landing page that they have created:

RE: Is it Safe to Migrate from All-in-Seo WordPress Plugin to Yoast Plugin ?
Yes this is a totally normal procedure. But as in everything you do with wordpress or otherwise please BACK-UP FIRST. But the procedure is standard and is done often. Both are quality plugins with Yoast definitely being the most popular choice. So a switch between the two is natural.
Here is the step by step guide:

RE: Link to homepage or brand page?
Few years back you could totally go for all the links to the homepage if you wanted to have your homepage to rank well. These days Google looks at the link relevancy that was mentioned above, and also link diversification that is natural to multiple pages on your website. So another vote for "give them their brands page on your website"

RE: Which rich snippet is better for SEO ?
It depends. Here is how I prefer my snippets:

If its a business page, service page, review, testimonials page, product page, etc. I prefer star rating.
