Do Google penalise you for having too many 404's?
-
Hi There
I have been doing some work reducing the number of 404's displayed in the Crawl Errors found in Googles Webmaster Tools.
We had a lot of products that were no longer available so have now been removed to reduce the number of 404s that had been found.
However, there are a number of URLs that have been crawled that do not exist on our website and have been flagged in the list of Crawl Errors. I want to know if Google will penalise us for this, perhaps affecting our quality score or if they can see that this is something out of our control.
This site for example: http://sibd.com/com_offers_unique_gifts.html has generated a lot of truncated URLs on its site that link to pages that don't exist on our site: http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers/pri… That is the exact link that it is trying to locate.
Here is the report for that particular link. As you can see the content has been scraped by other sites which has spread the problem further.
Pages that link to http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers/pri..

Sep 9, 2011I have spotted a lot of these and currently have around 3.3K 404s in total, a majority are from sites we don't control.
Is there an acceptable number of 404s a site should aim for and is the above something we should address or are Google smart enough to work out that we can't fix this ourselves?
Thanks!
Sam.

use a link checker to figure all the links that are 404.
use mod rewrite to send them to the home page or a given page when the one requested is not found.
google mod rewrite if you dont know wjhat it is

Hey Sam,
I believe this can adversely effect your overall site rankings, not due to penalties from the 404's themselves, but due to the assumed high bounce rate on those pages - which is going to increase your site's overall average bounce rate - which Google will attribute to the value of your website's content.
Just as Manischa said, I would 301 these pages to functioning content pages if you do not plan on resurrecting them, and if you do I would use a 302 (temporary redirect) until you have the content back up on those pages at which point you remove the temporary redirect status.
Hope this helps.

I have had similar problems (although with fewer pages), and did not notice a negative effect. If you can, I would still try to 301 redirect the URLs these pages point to to real pages. This will also help users which might click on one of the links (but does anyone click on the links from these scraper pages? I have never seen anything in my referrals...)

Google Analytics Not Properly Attributing Goals
My GA has been working fine for years and is now suddenly attributing 100% of my goals/conversions to a "referral" source. In this case "crm.zoho.com". (see attached url) Our contact form is a zoho CRM form. When prospect fills it out online, it dumps them to a thank-you page and the conversion is counted. That all works just fine, but it is not attributing the conversion to Organic or PPC or Direct as it was a month or so ago. I'm not sure if this may be the cause, but I was cleaning up GA about a month ago, deleting some filters I didn't think I needed any more. Thank you for your help. 9CRUx

Google is not indexing all URLs
My website have company and events profile from 200 countries. So it does have lots of URL. Earlier in August 2014, Google used to crawl 90% of URLs we submit. Thing goes wrong when we shifted from http to https. We lost traffic. But we are gaining it slowly. Main concern is that, It still does not indexed all submitted URLs. It have crawled merely 8% of all URLs submitted. site address is businessvibes.com Any help would be appreciated.

Blended results in google ???
I am a little confused about my search results. My ranking on google is displayed as #42. HOWEVER, I am #1 in the LOCAL results... what does that mean? Am I really #42? or am I #1 because local is listed over the organic results?

Google Analytics & Omniture Discrepancies
I am seeing a significant difference between my traffic numbers in Google Analytics and Omniture (Omniture has significantly more). I do not expect them to report exactly the same numbers but these are just too far off. Any idea why that is, or which one I should trust more? Thanks!

Alternative to Google Analytics
Hi from sunny Manchester! I'm looking for recommendations for alternatives to GA. I'm specifically looking for something which won't sample data and will give us accurate numbers. Our site is pretty big, it receives 6 million+ visits and 50 million+ pageviews/year. Any recommendations would be greatly received together with any good/bad experiences you've had with them. Thanks in advance, Brendan.

Google WM Tools: Canonical URL
Hello, We have a Google Webmaster Tools account under nlpca(dot)com but our preferred URL is www.nlpca(dot)com Do I need to delete the account and start over with the correct domain version, or is there a setting I can set somewhere? The code is in Joomla so I can't set a rel="canonical" in just the home page. Currently we have all home page version redirected to www.nlpca(dot)com Thanks!

Analytics/Google Keyword comparison
Hi I'm trying to establish a methodology to best show the gap between potential and realised organic keyword traffic. To obtain potential keyword traffic I'm using the Google Adwords keyword tool to derive local monthly search volumes for exact keyword matches. However, I'm confused as to which is the best way of getting a comparable metric from Google Analytics (GA). I was using custom reports and the 'organic searches' metric. However, this provides different values to a standard report selecting non-paid search in the default advanced segments. What is the best report/metric in GA to use for both organic and paid search volumes that would be comparable to the Google Adwords keyword tool. Also, I'm having problems getting my kids to eat their greens, any advice! 😉 Thanks Neil
