301 on ALL 404 for Pagerank Recovery, bad idea?
-
Its a bad idea to do a 301 to the home page of the site on all 404 pages as a way of pagerank recovery? If so, why? Thanks,
-
Thanks! I would like to 301 to this page http://bligoo.com/explore let me know what you think
-
it depends one what sort of 404, if its a 404 because its in the index, then i would let them 404 and fade away, if its a 404 because it is a external link then i would 301 to a relevant page, if they ae internal links, then i would correc the link, as not to leak link juice using a 301

Ignored but not penaliced? I dont worry if it is ignored, I think there is more value on the home page for a visitor than a 404 page. I think google use the same criteria, no? Thanks for your answer!

We provide a free blogging and social network creation platform www.bligoo.com (think at this as a mix of Wordpress and Ning) Over time, some users remove their sites, leaving the incoming links. We are looking for a way to preserve this page rank. May be linking to a search page , maybe just to the front page, or may be is just a bad idea and can be penalice and we should loose this...

They will be ignored if you do this.
For large redirect projects, you’ll need to get dirty and redirect all that
you want to keep the value from. There’s no simple way around this. Skip mass
redirects to a single page, as most won’t end up passing value, and remember:
_keep all redirects pointed to pages which are relevant to the original. _
Skipping this step negates the value.

I would make all internal pages which are 404 errors, turn them to 301s to relevant pages on the working site.
I need to see an example of this home pages with this relevant index page you desire to 301 it too.

Canonical vs 301 for index.php
Hello, we found recently quite a big error our index.php file had no canonical tag nor was a 301 redirect. So we put a canonical tag to it that it's the main www.examle.com duplicate . Now is there any difference in regards to link juice or Google 301 vs canonical tag ? I read that moz did a 301 from their index php. I understand one difference is that user then can Type in the URL if no 301, but I'm interested about ranking effect of it.

Existing content & 301 redirects
Hi All, I will try to keep this to the point. One of our websites was hit by penguin for unnatural linking. We are building a new site (same business, different domain), but we would like to take some of the pages/content off the old website and use it on our new site. Is it just a case of copying each page onto our new site and 301 redirect the old URL? Or should I just be completely rewording/recreating the old content so it is unique? Any help on this would be great, but I am also open to alternate methods too. Thanks Lewis

301 Redirect
Hello, On the 26.2.13 we changed domain names having followed the guidance of both Matt Cutts Youtube videos and googles own online documentation. We have a 301 redirect in place from our old domain ukmotorhomehirerental.com to our new site leisurerentalsdirect.com on a page to page basis. The site structure has not been altered in anyway. Google has been informed of the change of address. After the change the new domain transition was pretty seamless and ranked in the same postion in the SERPsThe one thing I've not done yet is tell all the webmasters who link to the old site that the address has changed (could this be it?)

Do I need to 301 EVERY page?
I have a client who is consolidating multiple EMD domains into a single domain for SEO reasons and for practical reason, like not having to produce content and perform SEO for 20 domains. My question is this: Do I need to 301 every single page from these old EMD domains? I bill this client hourly and while I could take the time to write 301s for literally thousands of pages I feel that this might not be the best use of his money, that I could strategically 301 the landing pages that get traffic and then route everything else to the new root domain...thoughts? I've researched this and have not been able to hear a really strong opinion yet.

Locating 404 Page Errors for Deletion
On my SEOmoz report, there are several 404 pages that I assume need deletion. Yes? When I am looking at my pages from the back-end of WordPress, how do I identify these to delete or fix them? In the list of pages I have created, it is not at all apparent when I click into "edit" the page that any of these are broken pages. I think the 404 pages are urls from pages that I changed the url to be more seo friendly, but they don't really exist. I hope this makes sense - it is baffling to me : ) Thank you for any insight and help with getting these cleared. The errors are listed below from the report. 301 redirect on the root of the site
Due to some historic difficulties with our URL Rewriter, we are in the position of having the root of our site 301 redirected to another page. So the root of our site: http://www.propertylive.co.uk/ has a 301 redirect to: http://www.propertylive.co.uk/home.aspx We're aware that this isn't great and we're working to fix this completely, but what impact will this have on our SEO?
