URL Structure Question
-
Hey folks,
I have a weird problem and currently no idea how to fix it. We have a lot of pages showing up as duplicates although they are the same page, the only difference is the url structure. They seem to show up like:
http://www.example.com/page/
andhttp://www.example.com/page
What would I need to do to force the URLs into one format or the other to avoid having that one page counting as two? The same issue pops up with upper and lower case:
http://www.example.com/Page
andhttp://www.example.com/page
Is there any solution to this or would I need to forward them with 301s or similar?
Thanks,
Mike

What happens when you naviaget to these urls,
[http://www.example.com/page/](http://www.example.com/page/)
and[http://www.example.com/page](http://www.example.com/page)
do they resolve to one or the other, or do both render the page?
The answer is to 301 to one or the other, and make sure you are not using both formats in your site.

Hey Mike,
Opt is correct the .htaccess file is the way to go but I would first test this in a sandbox / development environment as messing with this file can bring your entire site down quickly if you get it wrong (and sometimes you think you have it right and there is a knock effect elsewhere).
Failing that you could always add rel canonical tags to your site which either use the trailing slash format or not. This may be easier to do depending on the CMS you are using.

I believe the easiest way would be to add or remove the trailing slash in your .htaccess file in the root directory.
Make sure you backup your .htaccess file before you edit it!
The below may work for you but I would guess someone more experience in this area could help more with the coding:
"
Use this code to your .htaccess file to remove trailing slashes:
#get rid of trailing slashes
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?turbocelica.lv$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.+)/$ http:/www.example.org/$1 [R=301,L]or use this code to ADD trailing slash to the end of each URL:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(.[a-zA-Z0-9]{1,5}|/)$
RewriteRule (.*)([^/])$ http://www.example.org/$1$2/ [R=301,L]"

What to do with existing URL when replatforming and new URL is the same?
We are changing CMS from WordPress to Uberflip. If there is a URL that remains the same I believe we should not create a redirect. However, what happens to the old page? Should it be deleted?

Geo Targeting Content Question
Hi, all First question here so be gentle, please My question is around geo targeted dynamic content; at the moment we run a .com domain with, for example, an article about running headphones and then at the end - taking up about 40% of the content - is a review of some people can buy, with affiliate links. We have a .co.uk site with the same page about running headphones and then 10 headphones for the UK market. Note: rel alternative is used on the pages to point to each other, therefore (hopefully) removing duplicate content issues. This design works well but it involves having to build links to two pages, in the case of this example. What we are thinking of doing is to just use the .com domain and having the product page of the page served dynamically, ie, people in the UK see UK products and people in US see US products. What are people's thoughts on this technique, please? From my understanding, it wouldn't be any problem with Google for cloaking etc because a googlebot and a human from the same country will see the same content. The site is made in Wordpress and has <....html lang="en-US"> (for the .com) in the header. Would this cause problems for the page ranking in the UK etc? The ultimate goal of doing this would be to reduce link building efforts by halving the number of pages which links would have to be built for. I welcome any feedback. Many thanks

Hi All, So we have employees who can own their own domains for business, however, one employee has a domain that links back to our main site, but when it does, the URL and Page title of our main site, still say his own domain. IE: www.johndoe.com links to www.mysite.com except the url and itle still say www.johndoe.com What are the implications of this? Thank you

URL Format
Often we have web platforms that have a default URL structure that looks something like this www.widgetcompany.co.uk/widget-gallery/coloured-widgets/red-widgets This format is quite well structured but would it just be more effective to be www.widgetcompany.co.uk/red-widgets? I realise that it may depend on a lot of factors but generally is it better to have the shorter URL if targeting the key phrase "red widgets" One thing, it certainly looks a bit keyword stuffy with all those "widgets"

URL gets cut off in Google
Hi everybody, I got a question concerning my website URLs. It's a large WordPress website and we've got a lot of categorised pages ('parent' / 'child'). Now when I search for a specific page I only get to see the 'parent' name in the URL. The page which I am looking for isn't visible. Only a small arrow which shows me 2 options (in cache and compare). The URLs are not too long. Does anybody know why this happens, and how I can solve it? I added a image for reference. (Where /partners/ is the parent page and /partners/aruba/ isn't visible) Thank you very much. LSsT1Ua

Backslash in URL
my main URL is www.americanmusical.com, SEOMOZ shows I have a duplicate page title on www.americanmusical.com/. I have the think the backslash is causing other issues. I noticed when I first go to my site it is without the /, but if I navigate to the home page, the URL has the / in it. Any ideas on if this is a problem or how to handle it?

Site Hosting Question
We are UK based web designers who have recently been asked to build a website for an Australian Charity. Normally we would host the website in the UK with our current hosting company, but as this is an Australian website with an .au domain I was wondering if it would be better to host it in Australia. If it is better to host it in Australia, I would appreciate if someone could give me the name of a reasonably priced hosting company. Thanks Fraser
