Interesting keyword ranking issue

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
Without further ado, I'll jump straight to it:
http://www.dataclinic.co.uk is the web site of a UK based data recovery company. Historically the site has always ranked well for popular data recovery keywords in the UK, with page 1 rankings for most things data recovery related. However, lately things seem to have changed for our most important phrase "data recovery".
We noticed several months ago that Google had started to favour the page http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/data-recovery.htm instead of http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/ when a search for "data recovery" (and similar) was performed.
This didn't concern us that much as our rankings remained good. However now, neither of these pages seems to be ranking well when a search for "data recovery" is performed (I gave up at Page 5 - who looks past there when searching?).
I would appreciate your input on this please - especially about the following points:
1. Why have these two pages now seemingly disappeared from SERPS when a search for "data recovery" is performed ?
2. Why has Google chosen http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/data-recovery.htm rather than http://www.dataclinic.co.uk ?
3. Is this just something to do with UK results ?
4. Other sites I would expect NOT to see in the top results have started appearing - despite their link profiles etc remaining poor - perhaps Google is doing a bit of reorganisation with SERPS related to data recovery at the moment ?
5. And perhaps, most importantly - do you think we need to do anything about our current lack of visibility ?? As I mentioned, we've always ranked well, so these results are puzzling... Should search results revert "back to normal" in a day or so, or am I missing something and need to take action ??

Thanks for the reply. The page you mention (<cite>www.dataclinic.co.uk/hard-disk-raid-recovery.htm) has had a decent ranking for a while but it is specific & meant to appeal to a certain subset of data recovery traffic, rather than the whole lot. I think I'll just wait for a couple of days and see if there is any change... and perhaps there may be some more input into this discussion too !</cite>

I'm in the UK and see the site at position 11 on Google.co.uk with this page <cite>www.dataclinic.co.uk/hard-disk-raid-recovery.htm</cite>
Results change all the time, have you tried different machines, logging in and out of Google, disabling Web History etc?

Actually, I don't think so. I mean that my SERP is that different.
Why I think so? I just checked with an independent tool (searchmetrics) which has the rankings of up to 16th of October. So as of October 16th, you're ranked 11, losing 6.
Have you installed unpersonalized SERP for Firefox/Chrome? Maybe it has something to do with that. Even though it doesn't really make sense that personalization filters out your own project.
Even though you certainly know it: Sites that you "traded" places with are datlabs, unirecovery and mjmdatarecovery (new)

1. Hmmm, it seems you are getting different results in Germany... the data-recovery.htm page is not appearing on the UK results....
2. Yes, point taken - would that be the main reason though do you think?
3. It's ok - it seems your results are different to mine, which sort of answers the question
4. Specifically, http://tierradatarecovery.co.uk - in UK results they are featuring very highly on a lot of top keywords - previously they were virtually no where
5. Yes - that's all being done anyway... I think it's probably important not to act in haste only to regret it later.

For me, it is ranked 16 for "data recovery" and it is the page "www.dataclinic.co.uk/data-recovery.htm"

Taking this into consideration, disappeared does not apply, even though 16 is really not intriguing

Just a hint: document name "data-recovery.htm" as well as 65 keyword mentions as opposed to 23 on starting page

which websites are you talking about? I see strong competition as big names like chip appear, but I guess that's due to me being from Germany.

Nobody can really answer that one regarding changing back to what you judge normal. Observe it for a week, then take action. I mean, establishing good back links, optimizing on-page is never wrong - so also not now.

Privacy Policy requirements for Demos and Interests in Google Analytics
I have a client who is activating the Demographics and Interests in Google Analytics, and I need to provide an appropriate privacy policy, per Google's TOS. Can anybody suggest what to state in the privacy policy? Google says: "If you’ve implemented Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting, you must also disclose in your privacy policy: How you use data from Google's Interest-based advertising or 3rd-party audience data (such as age, gender, and interests) with Google Analytics." So, I guess it's advisable to state that the site gathers "3rd-party audience data." Is it enough to say that the info is being used to better understand and communicate with the website visitor?

Has anyone found a best practice for ranking a client who has one central office location, but a large, regional service area that they want to rank for?
All the most recent local search ranking is based upon physical addresses, but what happens when someone provides services and has staff 100 miles from that central office location, but no physical address to work with?

How to approach SEO for a large site that doesn't have specific keyword goals?
So, I have a project that has 10,000+ page of unique editorial content in a specific industry. They currently get about 500,000 pageviews a month and average just under 2 pages per visit. It has a 66 domain authority and has been doing "the basics" for SEO for about 7 years (headline is an H1, URL is custom while the headline is more "reader friendly", description is a snippet of the body copy a little into the first paragraph, nofollow in the comments). The crux is that it's an editorial publication so they're not targeting specific keywords, but a wide swath of keywords. Would it be best to just dive in and figure out some of the less competitive keywords for some of the articles that they could tailor some content to rank better for, then just move onto more and more? What are some ways to approach this if they just want to raise their general traffic and relevancy to the next level?

Local vs Global Search Results Yield Very Different Rankings Lately
When I monitor my website's rankings, I always do it from Canada (direct connection) and from the USA (using a VPN in Arizona). I've been monitoring rankings this way for the last 3 years. Most of the time, I got similar results (-5 / +5) from both location. My website is a ".com" and targets an international audience. Lately (is it since Panda 22?), I've seen dramatic differences in rankings from both locations. Some keywords will rank in the top 10 on Google.com (from the USA) while they will appear on page 3, 4, 5 and even lower on Google.ca (from Canada). The thing is, the top 10 results on Google.ca are not even from canadian websites. Fact of the matter, there are even some results from India websites (.in) in the top 10! I understand that Google.ca will give advantage to websites from Canada (or targeting the canadian market / .ca domain name) over international / US websites but there's never been such a huge difference in rankings until lately. Has anybody else experienced this? What are your thoughts?

Does Page Load Time Affect SEO Rankings?
I was curious about how much page load times affect rankings. Here's what I did: I put together a lot of interactive media on specific landing pages Time-on-Page from organic visitors went from 50 seconds to average of 34 minutes Bounce Rate decreased by 20% Page Load time increased from 1 second to 6 seconds and at peak times to 8 seconds (on 56KB test) In the meantime the page was re-indexed and re-cached My question is three-fold: Would the time on page give higher rankings for keyword Would decreased bounce rate enhance rankings? Would the page load time decrease rankings? Did anyone do a similar test? What were the results?

Keywords separated location names in footer
We have a US based website, most of the traffic come from search engines mainly Google. We have comma separated location names of all popular places / U.S states where our products are popular (about 80 comma separated location names on footer of the website). Means, these 80 (comma separated) keywords appear on all 900 pages of the website. Does these footer (comma separated) location names will prove to be comma separated keywords OR keywords stuffing on each page of website ? The reason we need these location names is because each product page is having traffic from keywords having location names in them. For example: "product1" in chicago "product1" new york "product2" IL "product3" california "product3" georgia and a lot more Location based keywords are bringing in about 20% of the traffic. Please suggest any good solution to this problem. Thanks !!!

Irratic page rank results - why?
Hi, Hi- I've changed the title and reposted this question as I didn't get any insight. I really am going around in circles for this; so any help that can be given would be really appreciated.I know that you guys have the knowledge so really hoping you can share it! Thanks - background: I run two sites: www.ragsmetals.com and www.yourgoldfund.com: They offer similar products but to different markets: one is predominently trade, one predominently customer focused. They vie for the same keywords.e.g. Buy Gold My Issue: I have been trying to build www.yourgoldfund.com up from an SEO point of view; it is FALLING in the rankings; I am doing NOTHING with www.ragsmetals.com and it is rising in the rankings. I checked webmaster to see if there were any warnings as a result of penguin (found out how to do this on here - thanks for that!) there are none. I have optimized the pages a lot. I have put time into getting in bound traffic, and even more excitingly some experts (from reputable domains) have just linked to our site because they like our content! So to me things should be improving . NOTE: My OSE listed inbound links are incredibly diferent from google Webmaster. What can I do. I am a scientific person so I love the fact that I have 2 sites to compare...interested to hear your thoughts. Many thanks in advance

Location specific keywords when your not in the location
Hi, I've been reading lots of great stuff on location optimisation and have picked up some new SEO knowledge on this area. Usually I target UK wide terms but this is a new beast for me. From what I have read if you was going after 'Ironing Services Essex' you would setup google places, include your address across your website and submit to local directories using the same uniformed address. BUT what happens if you live in a town 10 mins outside of Essex, your address doesn't contain Essex or Essex postcode on your website, the Google places pin is outside of the Essex area etc, well hopefully you get the idea. Basically Lets say your company is 10 mins from the area you want to rank for, it's easy for you to get into the location and do business but your address is different to the location you want to target because you live in a village 10 mins outside of the area (city) you want to target.
