Exact Match Domains
-
Hi All Which strategy from below would be best for the purchase of an exact match domain... 1) www.shiny-blue-widgets.com 2) wwwshinybluewidgetsshop.com Wondered if there was much difference in either as I know both have plus and minus points.
-
With the "shop" element in the domain option #2, you no longer have an exact match domain (EMD).
The hyphenated version would be preferred. However, with 3 hyphens you're probably beyond the acceptable limits.
From my perspective, neither is a good solution. I'd go the brand route instead..
I also agree with Shane Thomas that the EMD bonus will likely diminish over time.

Great feedback all. Thank you.

Yeah i knew i had read that recently. In my opinion Brand is more powerful of a tool than an "SEO Trick" but of course if you don't have a brand and are only trying to sell someone elses stuff it is hard i guess.
So i guess the answer to his question would be situational, meaning is the using of keywords in the domain relevant to the user experience?

Per the "leaked" rating guidelines, I believe raters are told to be on the lookout for Hyphenated Keyword domains. Also Google's patent for a new technology to actually devalue exact match domains was approved last month i believe.
In my opinion exact match will be dead soon, so using it as a strategy is probably not the best idea.
With that being said, i would say the hypenated version would be the worse long term bet, but no one can predict the Google future!

Gareth, I think that the hyphenated URLs have been commonly associated with spammers for so long that Google, more or less by default, wised up to the game. Our personal site findmyaccident.com is without hyphens and we've managed to rank rather well, yet when we did A-B testing with a subsite that had hyphenated URL, the results were not as promising. Granted, all the variables were not the same, but it was enough evidence to persuade us to avoid hyphens, if possible. Hope this helps!

Cool, nice idea about the H1.

Hi Thomas, Great point about checking for similar exact match domains already in the SERPS. I've always thought the search engines considered the hyphenated option spammy rather than the searcher, or is it both?
-
Tough question to anwer confidently and with any solid evidence. The best I can give you is in my own experience the past 4 of 6 clients whcih are relevant to the conversation have non-hyphenated urls which ranked slightly higher in google. The combo we used was to H1 tag to match but using spaces which I guess gave google a little more to munch on.

Hi Gareth,
From my experience, it doesn't really matter that much. The second one looks slightly less spammy, which might work for your advantage in terms of interacting with users.
Also, you might want to look at the SERP before developing the domain. if there are already similar exact match domains ranking on the keyword, it's harder to get a top ranking.
Best,
Thomas

Worth Dropping www. from Domain Name to Shorten URL
The Moz page grader identified several pages where the only problem is the length of the URL, above 75 characters. The site uses uses the www. prefix, and has for years, since 2001. Is it worth dropping the www. and doing a redirect to https://domainname.com to gain the 4 characters

Is the URL Matching the Page Title Important?
Hello I have tried searching for an answer on this but I can't get a clear answer due to the results when searching for URL title. I have just launched our second Shopify site for one of our brands. My first site launched in 2014 but when I launched I didn't pay much heed to SEO for page titles, URLs, etc so have retrospectively fixed this over time. For my Shopify site just launching I want to get it as right as possible from the start (learning from mistakes). My question is regarding URLs and what my approach should be for better SEO. So, I have a page with a Title of Newton Leather Wallets, Purses, Card Holders & Glasses Cases and the URL is https://www.tumbleandhide.com/collections/newton-leather-wallets-card-holders It was my understanding that I should try and make the URL reflect the Page Title more accurately. The problem is that this takes the character count to 77. On other pages it can be in the 80s. Will the above link be better for SEO than say just https://www.tumbleandhide.com/collections/newton I am just wary of the URL's being too long as my Moz Site Crawl is returning a lot of URLs that are too long. Thanks in Advance.

Deciding on domain
Hi, I have a company website that I have access to and it's bcannon.remax-mississippi.com. It allows you to choose a domain and have it 301 redirected so I changed it to Oxfordmissrealestate.com. I noticed that the page and domain authority for bcannon.remax-mississippi.com was pretty high so I took off the Oxfordmissrealestate.com domain and just left it as this subdomain. My question is, would you leave it how it is as the subdomain or change it? Thanks!

Should I buy an established domain that has lost it's high PR due to being offline for several months?
I'm considering purchasing a domain that has sat idle for several months. It was a company's domain that they have owned since the mid1990's but they went out of business. Previously, it had a PR 5 but has since lost it's PR as it has sat 'inactive' with a 'server not found' warning for the past several months. That being said, is there any point in buying the domain (for SEO purposes)? Is there any recourse with Google to try and re-establish the site's credibility or would I be starting over from scratch?

Duplicating content on multiple domains
Hey guys, I've started working with a new client recently called Resource Investing News. I'm more a Social Media person, though I do have SEO experience. RIN has about 40 URLs all of which have original news content published on them. One SEO-related issue that I can see here though is that the primary domain re-publishes all of the original content that the other URLs do. In other words: resourceinvestingnews.com will have an article on it that is also published on goldinvestingnews.com with the same date stamp and a link out to the original article. E.g. http://resourceinvestingnews.com/42539-molybdenum-goes-far-beyond-steelmaking.html http://molyinvestingnews.com/5301-molybdenum-steelmaking-vehicle-demand-electronics-lubricant.html Does anyone have an idea if this is something that should be reviewed and/or whether the content is being negatively affected in search? Many thanks!

Why is our site dropping in Domain Authority
Hi all, I have a question. I have been working SEO on our site www.betxpert.com for the last 4-6 weeks and I have been looking forward to seeing the new DA and PA numbers. However today, our DA is now 30...where it was 31 or 33 a couple of days ago. How come the decrease? I have only improved the site i should say... Hope someone can shed a little light on the issue... -Rasmus

Keyword vs Brand Domain Name
Hi guys, I'm about to launch a new site for a friend who is an accountant in a specialist field. He's already bought 2 domains: **www.[keyword]-accountants.net ** **www.[brand]accountants.com ** We have made the decision to use the brand domain to host the site but what can we do with the keyword domain as exact match domains still seem to be ranking well in the serps? e.g. build keyword links to the keyword domain (heavily seo'd content) and build brand links to the brand domain (conversion-optimised content) then after while 301 the keyword domain? Any new suggestions will be gratefully received!
