Wild fluctuation in number of pages crawled
-
I am seeing huge fluctuations in the number of pages discovered the crawl each week. Some weeks the crawl discovers > 10,000 pages and other weeks I am seeing 4-500.
So, this week for example I was hoping to see some changes reflected for warnings from last weeks report (which discovered > 10,000 pages). However, the entire crawl this week was 448 pages.
The number of pages discovered each week seems to go back and forth between these two extremes. The more accurate count would be nearer the 10,000 mark than the 400 range.
Thanks.
Mark

No problem!
Glad to see Cyrus' response!

Hi Mark,
I used to troubleshoot these types of problems (mysteries when I worked on the SEOmoz help team.
The best thing to do would be contact the Help Team (help@seomoz.org) and include information both your account, url and campaign. They can take this information and see if there is anything odd about your website, or if there is a bug in the crawling software, or finally if there is some strange quirk of incompatibility causing this behavior.
If you would rather, you can PM me with the info and I can try to troubleshoot it myself, but the Help Team has a few more tools and access to engineers, so they might be the better choice. Either way, let us know if you have any trouble.

Thank you for the response. I should have been more clear. It is the weekly SEOMoz crawl that is showing such inconsistent behavior, not Google. Sorry I wasn't more clear.
We have very few (if any) broken links, errors, etc.
Thanks.

Hi there Mark!
We used to have the same issue using Joomla here. It turns out that Google will reduce their crawling if your site has too many errors, broken links, and so on.
We used GWT to look into the 404's then redirected the broken links. Afterwards, we resubmitted the site to be reindexed. A few weeks later -VOILA- all is back to normal and our page freshness stays where it should.
I'd recommend looking at your GWT first, and fixing broken links followed by resubmission to SE's...
Good Luck!

Why does moz give different page authority to the same page if a visit comes from adwords vs organic search?
When clicking on an adwords ad the page the landing page has a page authority of 26. When clicking on organic search to the same exact landing page the page authority is 37. Why is this. Does moz or, more importantly Google see these as the same or separate pages? Thanks Tom

Wild Fluctuations With Yahoo/Bing Moz Report
Whenever I get my weekly custom report, I usually see steady but moderate gains in Google or slight drops 1 to 3 spots. But, with Yahoo/Bing it's just crazy. +25 here, -47 here, etc, etc. Also, we even have keywords that we rank in the top 3 on with google, but not the top 50 with Bing or Yahoo. Not sure how that's possible. Nor do I understand how if Bing powers Yahoo, how we can have reports that show a dramatic increase (or decline) in Bing, but the opposite in Yahoo. Granted, not all the rankings are like that for Bing and Yahoo, but there are so many discrepancies, I'm starting to wonder if it's a software problem or something. Does this happen to anyone else? Thanks, Ruben

Crawl Disgnosis only crawling 250 pages not 10,000
My crawl diagnosis has suddenly dropped from 10,000 pages to just 250. I've been tracking and working on an ecommerce website with 102,000 pages (www.heatingreplacementparts.co.uk) and the history for this was showing some great improvements. Suddenly the CD report today is showing only 250 pages! What has happened? Not only is this frustrating to work with as I was chipping away at the errors and warnings, but also my graphs for reporting to my client are now all screwed up. I have a pro plan and nothing has (or should have!) changed.

Issue in number of pages crawled
i wanted to figure out how our friend Roger Bot works. On the first crawl of one of my large sites, the number of pages crawled stopped at 10000 (due to the restriction on the pro account). However after a few weeks, the number of pages crawled went down to about 5500. This number seemed to be a more accurate count of the pages on our site. Today, it seems that Roger Bot has completed another crawl and the number is up to 10000 again. I know there has been no downtime on our site, and the items that we fixed on our site did not reduce or increase the number of pages we had. Just making sure there are no known issues with Roger Bot before I look deeper into our site to see if there is an issue. Thanks!

Too Many On-Page Links: Crawl Diag vs On-Page
I've got a site I'm optimizing that has thousands of 'too many links on-page' warnings from the SeoMoz crawl diagnostic. I've been in there and realized that there are indeed, the rent is too damned high, and it's due to a header/left/footer category menu that's repeating itself. So I changed these links to NoFollow, cutting my total links by about 50 per page. I was too impatient to wait for a new crawl, so I used the On Page Reports to see if anything would come up on the Internal Link Count/External Link Count factors, and nothing did. However, the crawl (eventually) came back with the same warning. I looked at the link Count in the crawl details, and realized that it's basically counting every single '<a href'="" on="" the="" page.="" because="" of="" this,="" i="" guess="" my="" questions="" are="" twofold:<="" p=""></a> <a href'="" on="" the="" page.="" because="" of="" this,="" i="" guess="" my="" questions="" are="" twofold:<="" p="">1. Is no-follow a valid strategy to reduce link count for a page? (Obviously not for SeoMoz crawler, but for Google)</a> <a href'="" on="" the="" page.="" because="" of="" this,="" i="" guess="" my="" questions="" are="" twofold:<="" p="">2. What metric does the On-Page Report use to determine if there are too many Internal/External links? Apologies if this has been asked, the search didn't seem to come up with anything specific to this.</a>

On-Page Keyword Optimization Question
First let me say I want to improve the text of the site I am working on focusing on the site visitor in the first instance. I run the "On-Page Keyword Optimization" The page fails on "Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document... ...Occurrences of Keyword 48" well over the limit of 15. The occurrence include those in the site navigation and strapline, but it was my understanding that Google was aware of nav areas/areas common to most other pages on the site and that keywords in these areas weren't viewed as being part of the page content. The keyword is the main keyword for the company, and the page is the home page i.e. "acme widgets" the others are "acme widgets for the home"... well you get the idea: The page breaks down as follows: 5 instances in primary nav 1 instance strapline 3 instances secondary nav Remainder in page body I am told by the tool to reduce to 15 instances, so should I? Have 9 instances in the nav and other areas and 6 or so on the page Have 9 instances in the nav and other areas and 15 or so on the page
