Have you used the Addthis Widget and had your rankings drop
-
Just wondering what experience people have of this widget? I added it to a site I look after late last week and we took an noise dive over the weekend. Any thoughts / comments are appreciated!

I have it on several sites. For most of them it has been there since AddThis was new. We added it to a couple sites a few months ago.
No problems at all.
I think that it is a very good service. We get lots of traffic back and some of our pages have received thousands of actions.

Hi Rodney
There are two ways to look into this, Correlation and Causation.
Some Correlation seems to be there from what you've said, with the widget being added about the same time as your rankings dropped (though would likely need longer for the pages concerned to get re-crawled and any effect to be seen in the SERPS).
However I'd be extremely surprised if there was any Causation. I've never experienced or heard of this particular AddThis widget or a similar social sharing widget to cause a websites' rankings to drop.
Likely nothing more than coincidence with the timing.
Have a look for any other correlations, check back over the past two or three weeks and if you've made any other changes or acquired any suspect links, look into those to see if they may have caused a drop in your rankings.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

I find it actually works quite well, if I gain some facebook / twitter exposure it actually has a positive effect on rankings.

Ranking dropped after domain change
Dear Moz Community, first of all excuse my bad english, i am from europe and my english is not the best 😉

I use Moz Analytics for several days and try to figure out why our "main keyword" totally dropped after our domain change. We started this year with a new company name and a new domain. Our old domain was dp-hochzeitsfotograf.de and the main keyword we try to rank for was "hochzeitsfotograf" which means "wedding photographer" here in Germany. Last summer we reached position 1 and short before our domain change we still ranked on position 6. We register the domain change in google webmaster tools and redirect all urls via 301 redirect to the new domain. Our new domain name is yourheyday.de and all rankings adopted pretty good except our main keyword (now position 62) which could break our neck the next few month. I would be so so happy and really appreciate if anyone of you have an advise for us. Thanks and many greetings from europe

Large Companies Taking Over Rankings
Recently many large companies. (lowes, bed bath and beyond, walmart, target, ace hardware, etc.), have taken over the rankings of keywords we used to rank high in. Is there any way to improve our rankings and compete with these large companies? Is this due to recent Google changes? Sample keywords are: electrolux vacuum bags, oreck vacuum bags, vacuum cleaner bag, vacuum cleaner filter

Am I using 301 correctly?
Hello, I have a 'Free download' type site for free graphics for designers. To prevent hot linking we authenticate the downloads and use a 301 redirect. So for example: The download URL looks like this if someone is clicking on the download button: http://www.website.com**/resources/243-name-of-the-file/download/dc37** and then we 301 that URL back to: http://www.website.com**/category-name/243-name-of-the-file** Is a 301 the correct way to do that?

A huge drop in rankings since last 10 days, and not recovered yet.
Hi Mozzers, I have a serious topic to discuss and want help from the experts here. Our website has 6 PR and we have been consistency staying at the top for very competitive terms in the niche. Since last Friday (24th February, 2012) we have been facing massive fluctuation in the rankings for most of the keywords we are focusing on. After this fall, we checked the following details but didn’t find any serious/critical issue that might be contributing towards these fluctuations:- We analyzed Google webmaster tools, there’s no update/warning from Google regarding any negative activity and other things seem to be normal. We checked our website through site search (site: www.domain.com) and found that we haven’t lost any indexed pages and things appear normally as they used to. So, we are sure that we haven’t been banned or penalized. We also cross verified our link building and other promotional activities and we didn’t find anything suspicious that could lead to such a big fluctuation. The drop is really big, some keywords went to 5th or 6th page from top 3 position; some keywords are not in top 200 or 300 spots which were usually staying put between 5th to 10th position. We have analyzed a lot but haven’t come to know the reason why we are facing this fluctuation. Our website is 4 years old and this kind of fluctuation has happened for the first time. Has anyone faced this kind of issue before? I’m looking forward to your support in identifying this trouble. Thanks

Drop down menu
Does the first anchor text link rule ( the first link is given weight ) applies to links in the body of the content only. If there are links in the drop down menu, and in the body of the content, does the above rule applies to links in the drop down menu.
