Gareth,
In Google, type in Site:YourURLhere
Example would be Site:Example.com
that will tell you what they have indexed.

Hi there,
Can you please tell me how you can tell if the websites are being indexed by Google?
Thanks for the reply!

Robert offered an outstanding reply. I will add to be especially careful of link building companies with their own networks. When you join they begin to add your site to their network. When you leave them they begin removing your links and a few months after you stop paying them you have ZERO links left and you paid for nothing. This activity is advertising, not link building. Many companies fall for this type of "link building" effort.
A true link building company will acquire relevant links to your industry. This requires a lot of unique effort whereby the link builder learns your industry and establishes connections with the authors in your niche. The links you earn this way are long lasting, relevant, provide direct traffic and are highly valued. You wont find these links in any promotional "we will be hundreds/thousands of links for your site each month" packages.

You are quite welcome. We are an SEO/SEM firm, DrumBEATMarketing, link building is a part of SEO. Not a company that advertises as a link builder.

I'd use Open Site Explorer to check their backlink profile. Check to see what kind of links they were able to generate for themselves, and then check on a few of those websites to see if they are indexed by Google.
I had a company try to sell me SEO+Link Building, but their whole link building network had been banned by Google.

Gareth,
This seems to be the question of the day. How to link, etc. By asking about link building companies, usually, people are looking for easy as opposed to quality. (I am not saying this about you, but drawing a distinction).
The main reason is that most people do not want to take the time or expend the effort required in good link building. The only other option beyond time and effort is $$$. For anyone to do a quality link building program it will cost you. So, if you are looking to pay some amount like US $ 500 or $1,000 and get quality link building, I am not aware of any who do it. I am open to seeing some though.
The other option is to go to a directory listing company that is trusted/somewhat trusted and have them list you with directories. (Not great option, but an option). Here is a list of directory sites: SEOmoz Pro Directory List, which was recently updated.
To assist you with linking and all that goes into it, here is a link to SEOmoz Professional Guide to Link Building. This will give you some perspective on why finding a quality link building company that provides a lower cost service is difficult.
We build links daily for our clients and there are days that I think we are still under charging (and we are not cheap). The reason is that it takes people to make all of this happen and good people cannot be had at a cheap rate. We have to pay good people well to do what is necessary to get the clients the quality links. We continually have to look at the clients and find new quality link sources based on what they do.
Good Luck, let us know how you work it out.

Link Building is starting to be a transition back to College. You have to write high quality content that identifies, and utilizes references. In addition to just being structurally, grammatically and intellectually sound, you also have to have it fill a niche within your market.
For example:
You notice that several university websites have an incomplete analysis of the water shed on a predominant mountain range in their area. You could collect resources online about this topic, and write a complete analysis of how it effects the people around it. You could then request links from these universities to link to your complete article. After you go through the 15-20 relevant universities you could start contacting the cities, real estate agencies and some guiding services to link to your article.
As long as you write a high quality piece of content that people will find informative and enjoyable you should generate a few links. Of course, I would suggest picking a more interesting topic, but this is just hypothetical.
That being said:
I would suggest The Interenet Marketing Ninjas (formerly We Build Pages) and Virante. Both of these companies have reputations for being great link builders, but you pay for high quality safer links.
If you aren't overly concerned with the risks, and you have a smaller budget, you could also talk to a link broker company like Text Link Brokers, who will assist you in purchasing links (which is a no-no if found). I don't mean to alarm you, Text Link Brokers is a great company that doesn't give out their client info, but it would be careless of me not to mention that there is a risk.

Should I focus on building links to my homepage, or internal pages?
I'm hiring several PA's to contact site's linking to my competition. Should we try to get links to content pages (blog post, article, etc) or build links directly to my homepage? More info: My site is a web application, so most links will naturally fall on the homepage. If links to content are more important we'll need to change our strategy. We are pitching the free version of the application to universities and schools as a resource for their students.

Link Building in Person
Someone answered me on Google plus but just to confirm. If I have a pet shop in one city and ranking well local. But want to rank even better in the surrounding cities. Is it a good idea to go to different pet shops in different cities and asked to trade links and help each other out . Will that be beneficial for my pet shop or not?

How long does it take for spam link building to take effect?
I saw a recent surge of a low quality website to the top of SERPS, and looking at the link profile is almost 5,000 newly acquired linking RD's, with a total of over 49,000 links. I looked at a bunch of the links and they are super spammy (foreign language, way unrelated and out of context, spam sites with garbage content, pages of paid links to the websites subpages, etc). My question is, how long does it take for Google to recognize this and penalize this shady site?

I'm hiring a link building company - need help choosing
I asked this question before and got mixed feedback. Companies vs. Freelancers. Well I have a couple questions here. At a certain point it is definitely worth going in house, but what about the knowledge that we could gain from working with a big agency? Does that really add any value? Can I hire a freelancer and trust him as much as a big agency? or vice versa? Can I hire an agency and trust them as much as a freelancer? I have also been advised to make sure they offer competitive / site analysis as a first step, AND inform you of exactly how many links they plan to build per month, how much time they will dedicate to you and your account, expect turn around times, and light strategy details that they would likely use. Thanks for any help! TA

Page Rank, Domain Rank, Link Building....Oh my!
Hi Everyone, So I am looking into a couple of sites that we can use for press release distribution. Naturally, I am looking for sites that will improve our SEO (sites that have a high domain authority). I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around the whole domain/page authority and how it effects our SEO. So for example, I am looking at prlog.org. They have an overall domain authority of 91...sweet! Is this all I should be looking at when I am looking to place a press release, which will include targeted links using appropriate anchor text? If I drill down even further to the actual section that the press release will live on, which will be the security section of the site, the page authority is a 49. Is this what I should be looking at? Do I have to drill down even further and look at the page rank for the actual URL that my press release will actually live on? I am assuming since it will be a totally new page that the page authority will be very low. Is this correct? Should I be looking at a combination of the two? The page authority of 49 is pretty low but the domain authority is very high. What does this mean for my SEO and my links? In a nutshell I need to know what I should be looking at for SEO purposes, is it domain authority, is it page authority of the section the site will live on or is it the actual page that my press release lives on. Is it a combination? What would you do in this situation? Also, could you give me a little more insight into when a low domain/page authority can actually hurt you. What the threshold where you get no link juice or are actually penalized? Do you have any insight in the domain/page domain number that is considered not worth it? Thanks all! Pat

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David

What are some of your best tips, strategies or resources for link building?
I currently work for a contract manufacturing company so when I think about building links it seems as if it's going to be a daunting task. Mainly because any kind of content that you can come up with is rather dry. When I go about searching for links I usually run into a lot of directories that charge anywhere between $25-$50 for a listing. I've had a hard time convincing marketing that we should start a blog which may be a good way to build some links if we come up with quality posts but those posts may be few and far inbetween. Does anybody have any recommendations for building links for this type of company or subject matter? Also, and I'm sure we have all heard this. When I mentioned the fact that we should be building some quality links to the site marketing first asked why and then commented "Well that shouldn't take you too long". Why is it so difficult to get management to accept the fact that managing a website is an ongoing and constantly changing process that involves research and experimentation?
