What constitutes duplicate content?
-
I have a website that lists various events. There is one particular event at a local swimming pool that occurs every few months -- for example, once in December 2011 and again in March 2012. It will probably happen again sometime in the future too. Each event has its own 'event' page, which includes a description of the event and other details.
In the example above the only thing that changes is the date of the event, which is in an H2 tag. I'm getting this as an error in SEO Moz Pro as duplicate content.
I could combine these pages, since the vast majority of the content is duplicate, but this will be a lot of work. Any suggestions on a strategy for handling this problem?

Hi Atul,
Different languages is NOT seen as duplicate content. If you take the same article and present it in both English and Spanish, that would be considered two unique articles.

Hi Ryan,
What about a site in 3 different languages Targetting 3 countries with same content ?
Would Google consider it as duplicate content.
Thanks

You rock!

Duplicate content is determined when a significant percentage of the content (i.e. the words on the page) is duplicated on another web page. Sorry if that seems too obvious but that's the definition. I am not sure what percentage SEOmoz or Google uses to determine duplicate content but based on your description it sounds like 90%+ of the content is duplicated.
Some options:
1. Add unique content to the page. Work to ensure at least 50% of the content is unique to the page. You can share information specific to the month involved. A Christmas pool party might be cold and you can talk about the holiday involvement. You can share images from the prior year's event, experiences from participants, etc.
2. Move the content to a single page. You can offer a single event page with information about each month the event is held.
3. You can maintain a single active page at a time. After the December event is over you can remove the page, publish the March 2012 page and 301 redirect the December URL to the March page.
4. You can canonicalize the various versions to a single page. If you take this step it is important to keep track of the indexed page version.
5. You can noindex all except one of the pages.
I suggest the above options are in order of preference. The first option will likely yield the best results. If you are not willing to go with that option, try the second option, and so forth.

Thx for the reply.
The events come up as separate instances when people are browsing our site. E.g., they browse all upcoming events at a certain swimming pool (rec center), and get a listing with a brief overview. Then they can click on an event details page. 1 event details page per event.
E.g., http://www.chatterblock.com/facility/12/crystal-pool-and-fitness-centre-victoria-bc/events/
From a user experience, this works great. question was asked because I don't want to be penalized for having duplicate content.

You could use the Rel="canoncial" tag but that will affect your search rankings.
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/duplicate-content
Are people actually searching for each month separately? If not, this might not be much of a concern.
Could you create a page that lists all the dates and that would be a where you could point the Rel="canoncial" tag to?

How do we avoid duplicate/thin content on +150,000 product pages?
Hey guys! We got a rather large product range (books) on our eCommerce site (+150,000 titles). We get book descriptions as meta data from our publishers, which we display on the product pages. This obviously is not unique, as many other sites display the same piece of description of the book. It is important for us to rank on those book titles, so my question to You is: How would you go about it? I mean, it seems like a rather unrealistic task to paraphrase +150,000 (and growing) book descriptions. As I see it, there are these options: 1. Don't display the descriptions on the product pages (however then those pages will get even thinner!)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Jacob_Holm
2. Display the (duplicate) descriptions, but put no-index on those product pages in order not to punish the rest of the site (not really an option, though).
3. Hire student workers to produce unique product descriptions for all 150,000 products (seems like a huge and expensive task) But how would You solve such a challenge?
Thanks a lot! Cheers, Tommy.0 -
Duplicate page content errors for Web App Login
Hi There I have 6 duplicate content errors, but they are for the WebApp login from our website. I have put a Noindex on the Sitemap to stop google from indexing them to see if that would work. But it didn't. These links as far as I can see are not even on the website www.skemaz.net, but are links beyond the website and on the Web App itself eg : <colgroup><col width="529"></colgroup>

Magento products and eBay - duplicate content risk?
Hi, We are selling about 1000 sticker products in our online store and would like to expand a large part of our products lineup to eBay as well. There are pretty good modules for this as I've heard. I'm just wondering if there will be duplicate content problems if I sync the products between Magento and eBay and they get uploaded to eBay with identical titles, descriptions and images? What's the workaround in this case? Thanks!

Is Sitemap Issue Causing Duplicate Content & Unindexed Pages on Google?
On July 10th my site was migrated from Drupal to Google. The site contains approximately 400 pages. 301 permanent redirects were used. The site contains maybe 50 pages of new content. Many of the new pages have not been indexed and many pages show as duplicate content. Is it possible that there is a site map issue that is causing this problem? My developer believes the map is formatted correctly, but I am not convinced. The sitemap address is http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/page-sitemap.xml [^] I am completely non technical so if anyone could take a brief look I would appreciate it immensely. Thanks,

Frequent FAQs vs duplicate content
It would be helpful for our visitors if we were to include an expandable list of FAQs on most pages. Each section would have its own list of FAQs specific to that section, but all the pages in that section would have the same text. It occurred to me that Google might view this as a duplicate content issue. Each page _does _have a lot of unique text, but underneath we would have lots of of text repeated throughout the site. Should I be concerned? I guess I could always load these by AJAX after page load if might penalize us.

301 redirect for duplicate content
Hey, I have just started working on a site which is a video based city guide, with promotional videos for restaurants, bars, activities, etc. The first thing that I have noticed is that every video on the site has two possible urls:- http://www.domain.com/venue.php?url=rosemarino
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | AdeLewis
http://www.domain.com/venue/rosemarino I know that I can write a .htaccess line to redirect one to the other:- redirect 301 /venue.php?url=rosemarino http://www.domain.com/venue/rosemarino but this would involve creating a .htaccess line for every video on the site and new videos that get added may get missed. Does anyone know a way of creating a rule to rewrite these urls? Any help would be most gratefully received. Thanks. Ade.0
