Guest Blogging Funny Problem!
-
Well it made me laugh and then cry a little after anyway.
I have a keyword which is ranking page 1 position 7, I created a really nice article with content relevant to the keyword maybe around 600 words.
I spent maybe half hour researching blogs on myblogguest looking for one that was based in the same country, had really good mozbar stats, even checked out how quickly other posts got indexed.
I put 2 anchor text links in the article and managed to get the blogger to post the article.
Next day checked the rankings and the post on the blog is now position 7, and has knocked me to position 8.
I'm tempted to ask the blogger to change the title tag not to include my targeted keyword.
Anyone got an advice on this?
-
Ok, its been about 2 weeks, checked this morning and I have moved up 1 position and the blog site is now 1 position below me.
-
Can you probably ask the blogger to change the title for it to be absolutely different?
-
Hi Ann,
It wasnt a guest post on a blog in the same topic, it was a general blog which covers pretty much everything BUT the domain auth is so powerful (one of the reasons I selected them) and I think this combined with the content has put them there, the title tag of the blog post doesnt even target the term, if you take 3 of the words in a title which has 8 words it makes the term up.
The blog post has even bumped wiki.
-
Now that some time has passed, is there still an issue with rankings? I assume his post was bumped above you because it was a fresh results (hard to say without knowing your actual key phrase).
Anyway, my advice is: just keep promoting your page and don't let guest posts compete with your own pages. Why do you need to guest blog on exactly the same topics? Go broader: expand your topics. Blog in neighboring niches (instead of your own). This way you'll get varied offers and hence links (and avoid any competition in the future).
As for the usefulness of guest blogging in general, I'd respectfully disagree with EGOL here. I've build my blog and personal brand on guest blogging only. I've given away my best content to SEOMoz, SEJ, etc. I have all my most powerful backlinks and leads coming from guest posts. Guest blogging is powerful, you just need to approach it properly!

Do you think the links on that post will come into play and push me above over a period of time?
Maybe. If the blogger has more traffic than you do it is possible that he will get more likes, tweets, links and social shares for his copy.... If you have more traffic then maybe you will win.
-
Yeah I did this before for a good article which was more of a tutorial and got around 100 likes in a few weeks, that alone made some movements in the SERP's (pretty good movement at that).
I do want to carry on with guest blogging though as I have seen some very good movement from this as well but maybe I should alternate one on my site one on another.

This is why I never give my content to others. Think about this........
Your site is doing pretty good. You got position 7 right away - and without any help. Your content is good enough that other people like it.
So, instead of spending any time looking for links or other people to post your content, just spend that same time creating another page of content. Then you have two pages up collecting traffic that probably rank well enough to pull in some traffic.
If you are giving your content away then the people who publish it are getting the traffic, the links, the likes and the sharing that you have earned. Don't feed your competitors and create new ones!
Work for yourself!
Over time the rankings of your good pages will rise and you will be the only person on the web who will have that content - that means zero compeition for your longtail keywords.
The results will be slow at the start, however, over time there is a good chance that your site will be more powerful and better known.

Need help with best practices on eliminating old thin content blogs.
We have about 100 really old blog posts that are nothing more than a short trip review w/ images. Consequently these pages are poor quality. Would best practices be to combine into one "review page" per trip, reducing from 100 to about 10 better pages and implement redirects? Or is having more pages better with less redirects? We only have about 700 pages total. Thanks for any input!

If a page ranks in the wrong country and is redirected, does that problem pass to the new page?
Hi guys, I'm having a weird problem: A new multilingual site was launched about 2 months ago. It has correct hreflang tags and Geo targetting in GSC for every language version. We redirected some relevant pages (with good PA) from another website of our client's. It turned out that the pages were not ranking in the correct country markets (for example, the en-gb page ranking in the USA). The pages from our site seem to have the same problem. Do you think they inherited it due to the redirects? Is it possible that Google will sort things out over some time, given the fact that the new pages have correct hreflangs? Is there stuff we could do to help ranking in the correct country markets?

Does having a different sub domain for your Landing Page and Blog affect your overall SEO benefits and Ranking?
We have a domain www.spintadigital.com that is hosted with dreamhost and we also have a seperate subdomain blog.spintadigital.com which is hosted in the Ghost platform and we are also using Unbounce landing pages with the sub domain get.spintadigital.com. I wanted to know whether having subdomain like this would affect the traffic metric and ineffect affect the SEO and Rankings of our site. I think it does not affect the increase in domain authority, but in places like similar web i get different traffic metrics for the different domains. As far as i can see in many of the metrics these are considered as seperate websites. We are currently concentrating more on our blogs and wanted to make sure that it does help in the overall domain. We do not have the bandwidth to promote three different websites, and hence need the community's help to understand what is the best option to take this forward.

Removing Blogs and 301 redirect to blog home page?
Hi, I was at the MozCon conference in Seattle this Summer and heard great concepts about deleting a lot of pages on your site that are deemed excess. It got me thinking to remove all of our old blogs that were: Sales(ee) less than 400 words Flat out bad blogs When i begin removing these links, i know i will get a lot of 404 errors because of previous social links. So in your opinion, what would you do? Do i just 301 those blogs to my main /blog page? Thanks

Top 5 tips you would give for an ecommerce blog
Hello, What are the top 5 tips or resources you would give to an ecommerce site that is starting a blog? If EGOL could share, too, that would be great. He's the best. So far we are doing: 1. Around 1000 words per blog post, but varying depending on the topic 2. New product and best product reviews for some of the posts. 3. I'm doing my best to have the writer make them best-of-the-web 4. After we've got a track record, I'll analyze the statistics to see what's working. 5. There's very little blogging in our industry Thanks!

Problem with 404 and 500 Status code pages
Dear SeoMozzers, I have a question related to one of the sites I have recently changed the URL, going from http:example.com to http://www.example.com I did 301 redirects, as I was recommended to do. In the past month I have noticed an incredible drop in Google's rankings for many keywords and checking the crawling errors appearing in the SEO Crawling Report I have witnessed mayhem with Canonical/301 redirect types of errors. Now, things seem a little better. I have noticed a reduction in the number of 301 and Canonical type or errors (by the way, I still do not get the Canonical issue :-)). My little questions are the following: Will I ever go back to the positions I used to occupy before I redesigned the site's URL structure? I have now noticed that the SeoMoz Crawling report show "404 Staus" errors and one "505 Status" error. Can somebody please tell me how to fix the 404 Status Errors? Can I fix them by myself, or maybe I can ask the guys at the web hosting company, since I am really bad at taking care of technical issues? Thank you for the time you took to clarify my doubts. Ad maiora, Sal
