Basic SEO HTML

Hello Everyone,
One place I am weak is coding for SEO. I need to get better.
One question I do have is can anyone explain why it's important to place css and java script files in an external file?
How do you do this and how do you know if it's already being done?
If it has not been done on a site is it hard to go back and do?
I understand this is important from a site load time issue
Thanks,
Bill
P.S. Can anyone recommend a resource where I can learn proper html coding for SEO? Thank you!

Hi Bill!
A couple of your questions that haven't been answered yet:
How do you do this and how do you know if it's already being done?
When you look at the code for a page, if you see a lot of code within tags, that means that the CSS is on the page rather than in an external file.
You can do the same with JavaScript. If there is a lot of code within the tags in the source code, you know there is JavaScript on the page instead of in an external file.
If it has not been done on a site is it hard to go back and do?
It is very simple to take this code, put it into an external file, then link to it like we do on this particular page's code:
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="[/q/moz_nav_assets/stylesheets/production/all.css?0.4.25](view-source:http://www.seomoz.org/q/moz_nav_assets/stylesheets/production/all.css?0.4.25)" />
That is what it looks like when you link to a CSS external file.
If possible though, I'd definitely have someone who knows and understands the code help you out at first. There's nothing more infuriating that making what you think is a small change to a JavaScript file and it end up breaking the whole site.
Good luck! And I hope this helps a bit.

A good place to start is to look at google's webmaster guidelines:

Speeds up the download time of the page - good for Google and good for users. Helps browsers cache objects and speeds up future page views and pages from the same site.
Look at the source code to see if you're linking to a CSS/JS document or displaying it on page.
Easy to change if it's on page - stick it in a new document and link to it. Google around for help.

How do you build your pre-sales seo audit
Hello Moz community, I'd like to know if you build "pre-sales seo audit" when selling your services to a prospect. I think the main idea of a pre-sales audit is to show your prospect that you understand his industry (trends & competition) understand the opportunities know the roadblocks on his website If so, i'd be interested in discussing the information you put into your pre-sales audit and how you organise it. If you know ressources i should read as regards to mini seo audit / pre-sales seo audit just paste the link 🙂 Thanks for your answers

Does bait and switch redirecting affect SEO?
Yeah, the question might be an odd one, but I'm new to SEO. Currently we've been considering creating links to certain pages on our site that instantly redirect to a landing page like this (referring to it as bait and switch redirecting): http://www.ecornell.com/certificate-programs/human-resources-management-training/advanced-certificate-in-strategic-hr-management/crt/ILRASHRC1/?lp=http://info.ecornell.com/executive-certificate-in-hr-leadership%3Fls=xxx%26of=xxx This essentially causes the user to "hop" from the content page directly to the landing page. Now, the content page is indexed otherwise, so I'm wondering if time on page (which is basically 0) or anything else might affect page rank. Also, if this is something we shouldn't do, that'd be great to know too. It feels sort of dirty, but I can't find any resources telling me it's bad, or how it would affect pagerank. I've read about pagejacking, but this doesn't seem to fall into the same category. Thanks! Alan

Leaving Comments on blogs when html is removed
I found the following blog. It is pagerank 5 do follow http://www.unssc.org/web1/programmes/rcs/cca_undaf_training_material/teamrcs/forumdetail.asp?ID=32 If you attempt to leave a comment with html, the html is removed. There is a button which allows you to leave a comment but if you do it gets redirected to the domain of the blog not your site. However there are still people leaving links with the url of the intended site. As late as today. look at this comment
