Forcing keywords into domain structure
-
Hi there,
Over the last few years, I've seen people structuring their site so that their main content is all housed in a folder named after the site's primary keywords.
For example, if I had some content about home insurance, normally naming conventions state that I might put the content at a URL such as:
www.mydomain.com/home-insurance
However, some sites, may change this structure to include their main keyword again in the URL string:
www.mydomain.com/insurance/home-insurance
The folder 'insurance' would normally hold the site's Sitemap to increase internal linking strategy too.
I'd be really interested to hear whether anyone has seen any serious benefits from re-structuring their site in this way? What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks,
-
As Axel and Acorn I also think that you should leave the URL the shortest possible in terms of SEO. Also if you change the URL structure, the external links pointing to the old pages wont be updated automatically and will be kind of wasted.

If there where no search engines would you do it?
This simple question often helps you with common sense. Dont't make the site (internal & external) too complicated.
-
I'd always recommend that the navigation is useful to the user. e.g.
if your website covered other areas of finance then this would make sense:
finance.com/insurance/home-insurance/
finance.com/insurance/motor-insurance/
finance.com/loans/homeowner-loans/but if you were adding it just for seo, personally i wouldn't bother. I'd go for
Insurance.com/home-insurance/
insurance.com/motor-insurance/ -
Hi Axel - thanks for the response.
What about if you're starting out on a new site though? Would you go with the amended URL structure or the more traditional one?
-
I don't think it's worth the effort to change all the URLs...

Menu Structure
I'm working on a site where there is a top level menu with a dropdown off a couple of the main headings and subsequent dropdown from one or two of those dropdowns. Usual stuff. The main problem we are having is the ranking of one of the main menu pages, some of which is historical stuff we have cleaned up and waiting for Penguin. My question is whether the following is a prudent step. The main menu option/page and keyword is something like "Green Widgets" but this activates a dropdown where there is a link to 'Types of Green Widget', then again there is a dropdown with several pages to different types of Green widget. The two menu items "Green Widgets" and "Types of Green Widgets" both link to the "Green Widget" page. As the "Types of Green Widgets" link is sitewide and not really in the right flavour for the "Green Widget" page would it be prudent to remove the link element of that menu item or set it to /#

Incorporating a difficult keyword in Headline
Hi ! I need to incorporate a password in a H1 Headline that is "Photography Freiburg" As "The best Photography Freiburg" would sound strange and would be grammatically incorrect I would write "The best Photography in Freiburg". Is this much worse concerning SEO? Or will Google still put a high correlation to the Searchterm "Photography Freiburg" ? Thanks!

Keyword in URL?
I have a website that has been live for about 8yrs. I do not have any significant rankings for my main keywords but am now starting SEO on my site. I am contemplating changing the url to contain the main keyword prefixed by my brand name. Any views on the ranking benefits and or CTR benefits.

I am taking over the SEO helm so to speak and have to do a complete on site make over( offsite as well eventually soon) He has on every page meta keywords that are just stuffed with "money keywords" and they are the same on every page, Should i just delete them entirely and leave that attribute blank? Hope to hear back soon, thanks.

When the keyword rankings trend south…?
So for the past 3 or 4 weeks or so I’ve been making some on page tweaks for keywords that we should rank for, implementing all the keyword recommendations, and getting “A’s” in the report card for page optimization in the Pro tool, and also doing things like fixing a bunch of 404’s that I found ….so I thought I was doing a bang up job… My rankings for some keywords were generally trending (slowly) in the right direction, but this morning I see that 2 important keywords that I had been working hard on, and which had trended from around 40 to in the high 20’s in rankings, has now dropped out of top 50 altogether…. I’m a little dispirited, and now wondering if I did something wrong? Any thoughts or recommendations? Is it normal just to drop out of top 50 when you were in the 20's or 30's? Thanks!
