Unknown "/" added causing 404 error
-
I have four 404 url redirect errors that I cannot sort out.
It tells me the referring url:
|
www.homedestination.com/calculator-mortgage-resources.html has a "/" on the end.
cannot find:
I cannot figure out where this referring url is; as it is in the root file without a "/" on the end. Could it be on a page somewhere? All my Dreamweaver page link tests come back ok.
I must be missing something simple and would value help for others who may spot it?
Thanks!

Dan,
Thanks for the helpful answer.
Sorting through that many pages looking for a stray "/" will take time. Any shortcut ways to find it? I do not get the error in Google crawl checks; I do find it in my deeper seomoz advanced cvs files. Need I try fix it then?
You are right about the canonical tag. For whatever reason I get an error in seomoz that says:
Appropriate Use of Rel Canonical
Moderate fix
<dl>
<dt>Canonical URL</dt>
<dd>"http://www.homedestinantion.com/calculator-mortgage-resources.html"</dd>
<dt>Explanation</dt>
<dd>If the canonical tag is pointing to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. Make sure you're targeting the right page (if this isn't it, you can reset the target above) and then change the canonical tag to reference that URL.</dd>
<dt>Recommendation</dt>
<dd>We check to make sure that IF you use canonical URL tags, it points to the right page. If the canonical tag points to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. If you've not made this page the rel=canonical target, change the reference to this URL. NOTE: For pages not employing canonical URL tags, this factor does not apply.</dd>

Where are you getting your 404 error report? If from someone other then Google Webmaster Tools, probably not a worry.
That page is not indexed in Google (and if they did index it, they took out the slash, so you don't need to do a redirect.) You probably have a link on your site and someone accidently added the slash in the <a>href link. Just find the bad link on your site and take out the slash. </a>
<a>The only other thing that could be causing this, is a backlink, but opensite explorer does not have back links for that page yet.
The best place to check for 404s that need attention is Google Webmaster Tools.

PS - You should really have a canonical tag on your site.</a>

My guess would be that it is coming from an external site.

Jordan,
Thanks for your response.
Yes. I have done that some months back. My problem is with url redirects that have the "/" on the end. AND all my aspx files - Adobe Business Catalyst does not allow me to use a 301 redirect on them. All that in another subject.
As none of my pages ends in a slash, I don't know where this came from and what to do since the traditional 301 url redirect fails.

I am not sure how to go about finding the broken link but if you want a simple fix you could try adding a 301 redirect so that the 404 error won't happen any more. Do you know how to do that?

Please let me know if I am in a right direction with fixing rel="canonical" issue?
While doing my website crawl, I keep getting the message that I have tons of duplicated pages.

http://example.com/index.php and http://www.example.com/index.php are considered to be the duplicates. As I figured out this one: http://example.com/index.php is a canonical page, and I should point out this one: http://www.example.com/index.php to it. Could you please let me know if I will do a right thing if I put this piece of code into my index.php file?
? Or I should use this one:0 -

I keep getting crawl errors for urls that have email addresses on the end. I have no idea what these are. Here is an example: the-audio-visual-system/sales@intercallsystems.com Where would these be coming from, how are they created? How can i fix them? When I try to do a 301 redirect it doesn't work. Thanks for your help,

Where did the "Location" go, on Google SERP?
In order to emulate different locations, I've always done a Google query, then used the "Location" button under "Search Tools" at the top of the SERP to define my preferred location. It seems to have disappeared in the past few days? Anyone know where it went, or if it's gone forever? Thanks!

Handling "legitimate" duplicate content in an online shop.
The scenario: Online shop selling consumables for machinery. Consumable range A (CA) contains consumables w, x, y, z. The individual consumables are not a problem, it is the consumables groups I'm having problems with. The Problem: Several machines use the same range of consumables. i.e. Machine A (MA) consumables page contains the list (CA) with the contents w,x,y,z. Machine B (MB) consumables page contains exactly the same list (CA) with contents w,x,y,z. Machine A page = Machine B page = Consumables range A page Some people will search Google for the consumables by the range name (CA). Most people will search by individual machine (MA Consumables, MB Consumables etc). If I use canonical tags on the Machine consumable pages (MA + MB) pointing to the consumables range page (CA) then I'm never going to rank for the Machine pages which would represent a huge potential loss of search traffic. However, if I don't use canonical tags then all the pages get slammed as duplicate content. For somebody that owns machine A, then a page titled "Machine A consumables" with the list of consumables is exactly what they are looking for and it makes sense to serve it to them in that format. However, For somebody who owns machine B, then it only makes sense for the page to be titled "Machine B consumables" even though the content is exactly the same. The Question: What is the best way to handle this from both a user and search engine perspective?

404 errors is webmaster - should I 301 all pages?
Currently working on a retail site that shows over 1200 404 errors coming from urls that are from products that were on the site, but have now been removed as they are seasonal/out of stock. What is the best way of dealing with this situation ongoing? I am aware of the fact that these 404s are being marked as url errors in Google Webmaster. Should I redirect these 404s to a more appropriate live page or should I leave them as they are and not redirect them? I am concerned that Google may give the site a penalty as these 404s are growing (as the site is a online retail store and has products removed from its page results regularly). I thought Google was able to recognise 404s and after a set period of time would push them out of the error report. Also is there a tool out there that on mass I can run all the 404s urls through to see their individual page strength and the number of links that point at each one? Thanks.

404 Errors in Google Webmaster Tools
Hello, Google webmaster tools is returning our URLs as 404 errors: http://www.celebritynetworth.com/watch/D5GrrPEN9Oc/tom-mccarthy-floating/ When we enter the URL into the browser it loads the page just fine. Is there a way to determine why Google Webmaster Tools is returning a 404 error when the link loads perfectly fine in a browser? Thanks, Alex

Adding Wordpress On Separate Server w/ subdomain = SEO Issues?
I have a client that wants to setup wordpress for their business site. However, they are really concerned about the load time a wordpress install creates on their site in the root. So, they want to setup wordpress with a sub-domain on a separate server. For example: abc.domain.com As far as SEO is concerned with the main site, what are the advantages and disadvantages for using a separate server w/ subdomain?
