Ecommerce: content on category pages
-
I have to optimize some online Shops and after Panda I really don't know what to think about thin content on product overview pages anymore... used to be that we could improve our rankings easily just by adding 1-2 sentences on such a page. This always worked for non-overly competitive terms.
Now It feels like it doesn't work any longer, but I couldn't put my finger on it and I don't have the resources to test.
Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.geschenkidee.ch/wandtattoos/aus_aller_welt.html
I would add max. 3 lines of text directly over the product thumbnails. What do you think? Is it worth adding some text on a product overview page or do I not even have to bother post-Panda?

Hi Erica
Yes, we've considered the solution with featured products (for other reasons than SEO though). But it seems to me that it can be difficult to integrate the generic keywords for our category pages in the product review.
Anyways, that's definitely a solution I will take into consideration besides the general descriptive category text.

Unfortunately, more text is what Google wants. Have you thought about adding maybe a featured product with a good review on it to both enhance the page & to add more content to it?

thanks Brendan.
What I'm wondering is if 2-3 lines not paragraphs can do the job as well. Due to usability-concerns the maximum space I can get are about 200 characters and I'm not sure if that can have the same positive effect.
Thanks for mentioning the link amount - we're trying to minimise those somehow...

hi Philipp,
We did something very similar recently. Our rankings had dropped significantly for a particular keyword. We added 2-3 paragraphs of well optimised text to the page (amongst other changes) and our ranking recovered within a couple of days and is now back on page 1.
I'd absolutely add some text to the page you shared but it seems to have other problems too - 298 links on the page for example. I'd look to cut those down too.

How can I make sure pages with similar content don't damage the other's SEO?
I work for a travel company and I have a 'tour page' targeted for pre-booking and a 'booking pack page' post-booking page, with some similar content but with details such as hostel locations, meeting places and times etc. I want to make sure the tour page keeps the authority as this is what I want to rank on SEO. I've got a couple of similar problems to this across site, there are a few pages on site that are post-sale and don't really need to rank on Google but it would be great if they could contribute to other pages' rankings. Thanks!

Homepage ranking above category page, but no keywords in there! Why?
So...we have a 5 year diary product page at TOAD diaries. It's had a lot of on page treatment: keyword in title, alt text, decent copy, pictures of the product etc. Find it here - http://www.toaddiaries.co.uk/shop/5-year-diary So we rank 22nd for 5 year diary, but google sends the customer to the home page! There no mention of 5 year diaries on there. Seems ridiculous! I can't help but think we should rank better for this as it's a low difficulty term (according to keyword difficulty tool on MOZ). Any thoughts on why this might be? Oh, Google HAS indexed the 5 year diary page. Used a search operator to check that first (thanks to you guys on here:) ) Thanks.

Title tag of product page including category keyword?
I'm doing some work on a site that essentially is about giving and getting reviews. It's heirarchy has categories and products within those categories. For the title tag of the product pages, they currently have "Best {Category} | {Product} Reviews" I've advised them that they should remove the "Best {Category}" part because a) they're already targeting the category pages themselves and b) from a user perspective, the product page should just have a title tag that makes sense for that particular page (the page is not necessarily the "best" and certainly is not a series of products within that category). I wanted to post here to confirm that my advice is sound. Thanks.

Static pages with dynamic content: Good for SEO?
I wanted to know ones thoughts on reducing duplication by creating a static page with a few dynamic fields. Has anyone done this? If 75% of a page is static and 25% is dynamic, is that a good ratio? It's an idea I am thinking about to combat duplication issues affecting ecommerce pages. Some ecommerce sites generate a new page for a small change like size, but the content is the same. What if you could create a single static page and depending on the size chosen, only those fields connected to the size are dynamic? Everything else remains the same. For caching purposes, you always submit a cached page with default values. Wouldn't this work? Isn't this a solution for duplicate ecommerce pages? It would also help in ranking, rather than multiple external links across duplicate ecommerce pages, it would just be to a single page.

Seo category or specific seo page?
To rank in google.bg for key phrase like "seo optimization for web" which do you thing is better: To make most of the backlinks with anchor text "seo optimization for web" to point to a link that is a category with many seo articles or to point to a single page from this category?

Pages vs Posts
What are your thoughts on pages vs posts? I am setting up a new blog for a client but not sure how to structure the content. I may just do posts or a whole bunch of page listed down the sidebar. It seems like my pages always rank better than my posts. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be because of the dates tied posts?

User experience regarding dulpicate content and managing this content with google.
Hi long title i know! We are moving on to magento and have chosen to allocate a specific colour to each category using corresponding tabbed navigation for user experience. All products within each of the coloured tabs then inherit the repective colour, giving the products a category identiy within the store. This layout has had a positive feedback from our "testers" As a lot of our products are seasonal and can be represented in different categories there is a significant amount of duplicate content. ATM i see our options as being: Alter the site structure so that the category is not shown in the url, therefore eliminating our duplicate products. The downside of this is that the colour co-ordination of the categories would not work at product level as its the category path that assigns the colour. create canonical links for every duplicate, can this be damaging? keep the duplicates and do nothing let google decide the most important version of a product. any guidance would be appreciated!
