Understanding page and subdomain metrics in OSE
-
When using OSE to look at the **Total External Links **of a websites homepage, I dont understand why the page and subdomain metrics are so different.
For example, privacy.net has 1,992 external links at the page level and 55,371 at the subdomain level. What subdomain? www redirects to privacy.net. And they have 56,982 at the root domain level - does that mean they have around 55k deep links or what?

Thanks Ryan, that exactly the information I required.

Using the privacy.net example you shared, there is no subdomain. Privacy.net is only using their root domain, http://privacy.net. All the data is for the root domain. If the address was www.privacy.net, then data could either apply to the "www" subdomain, or the root domain. There are an infinite number of possible subdomains. Some common examples might be blog.privacy.net or sales.privacy.net.
The page metrics in OSE for privacy.net show 2,043 links from 881 root domains. In other words, there are 2,043 visible links to the url http://privacy.net.
On the other hand, the subdomain metrics (or root domain in this case) apply to the entire privacy.net site. For example, on of the site's internal pages is http://privacy.net/internet-cookies/. The subdomain metrics add up all the links to the home page, the /internet-cookies page and every other page on the entire website.
With the above understood, your math is accurate. The site has 55k links to internal pages. Many of the links (17k+) go to this page: http://privacy.net/password-management/

Hi meterdei an example of a subdomain would be blog.mydomain.com
The OSE gives you the option to check all links pointing to a specific page, all links pointing to a subdomain and all links pointing to root domain.

Subdomain 403 error
Hi Everyone, A crawler from our SEO tool detects a 403 error from a link from our main domain to a a couple of subdomains. However, these subdomains are perfect accessibly. What could be the problem? Is this error caused by the server, the crawlbot or something else? I would love to hear your thoughts.

New site: More pages for usability, or fewer more detailed pages for greater domain authority flow?
Ladies and gents! We're building a new site. We have a list of 28 professions, and we're wondering whether or not to include them all on one long and detailed page, or to keep them on their own separate pages. Thinking about the flow of domain authority - I could see 28 pages diluting it quite heavily - but at the same time, I think having the separate pages would be better for the user. What do you think?

Should we move our documentation off subdomain?
Background: We have a popular open source e-commerce platform at http://spreecommerce.com. Right now the documentation is on http://guides.spreecommerce.com. We have "edge" documentation (for stuff that's not yet released) on http://edgeguides.spreecommerce.com but since it's largely duplicative we've told google not to index any of the edge stuff (via robots.txt). Question: Should we consider moving the guides under the main website under /docs or something like this? There's a ton of great content that people often read to learn more about the platform. Seems like we might be diluting our juice a bit to have it on a separate domain. WDYT?

Why would a link shown on OSE appear differently than the page containing the link?
I recently traded links with a site that I will call www.example.com When I used open site explorer to check the link it came back with a different page authority as www.example.com/index.htm yet the link does appear on the www.example.com page. Why would this be?

Pages not being found in serp
Hi I'm helping a collegue with his website. For what ever reason the pages in the Solutions Menu are not being found in the search result for keywords related to the pages. (Homepage mainly comes up in the search result). Does anyone have any advise to why this may be happening? *To give you a bit of a background understanding, previously all the menu content was copied (which I made him change), he also had hidden text on some pages (i made him remove, white text on white background) plus the url structure changed as well. Persoanlly I think he is over using , links, internal linking is not great & the general content is not great in the menu. Your Thoughts are welcomed, thank you.

Ranking above PLACE PAGES
What does it take for results to show up above Place Page results. It seems like Google Local gets a lot of emphasis . Any thoughts?

Which pages to "noindex"
I have read through the many articles regarding the use of Meta Noindex, but what I haven't been able to find is a clear explanation of when, why or what to use this on. I'm thinking that it would be appropriate to use it on: legal pages such as privacy policy and terms of use
