How to estimate what traffic you should be getting?
-
Hey guys i have a question in regards to targetting seo results. A lot of my customers will me SME and most have visitors of under 50 per day. My question is how do you judge the amount of traffic a website of a small local business should be getting?
For instance i have a site that gets average 22 visits per day, i would love to know how much their competitors get per day so i can know what targets to strive for.
I feel that is 22 is ten times more than the compeitors website then the amount of seo time needed is less than if it is 10 times behind what competitors get.
Thoughts?

Unfortunately any number you come up with will be a rough estimate at best. A WAG at worst. Since Google never shares actual search numbers for specific terms there is no real way of knowing what the maximum number 'could' be.
You can use traffic estimators to give yourself a ballpark idea of what the maximum 'could' be and then use a percentage of that to get an estimate. You could start with the keyword estimator tool here to get started.
Assuming that a search term gets 100 searches per month and you rank #1 for the term you might be able to grab 40 clicks. But again, these are all estimates. Things like title and description can make a #3 result get a better CTR than a #1 spot.
We tend to use 40% for #1, 25% for #2 and 10% for #3 to at least get us an idea of where we are. Then we watch the analytics and compare that with known numbers to get more accurate as we go.
Assume you rank #1 for your term. And you get 100 clicks but the traffic estimator says 800 searches. This means that based on the estimator traffic results you are getting a 12.5% CTR. You can then use the 12.5% on all of your other terms for that estimator to get more accurate numbers for all of your other terms.
In the end, we assume that traffic estimators are guesses themselves so the extra research needed becomes important.

I use SemRush for that. Simply type in competitor's url and see results for their traffic. See how much % traffic they are getting for each keyword compared to the total amount of traffic they are getting.

Is anyone else getting this search result?
One of our blog posts (http://dress.yournextshoes.com/celebrities-dresses-skirts-wind/) used to rank well for "windy skirt", but we're not ranking anymore. When I search for "windy skirt", all the top 10 results are Youtube videos. Is anyone else seeing this? gs1eVsn

What is a reasonable time frame to get to the 1st page
If my site is not in the first 50 results and the keywords are medium to highly competitive? I have just started adding to directories, planning out a blog, fixing seo mistakes, updating sitemaps etc. The 1st ranking competitor has external links in the tens of thousands whereas I have maybe a few hundred. I see a light at the end of the tunnel as competing sites in between me and the 1st place ranking competitor have external links only in the 1000-2000 level. We are an ecommerce site and want to be ready for our high season which is Nov-Jan.

Keywords and Getting Started with them to the top of the Search Engines
We are an online Saas Based startup. Strongly 70% of our daily users come directly to us since they know us by the url . Now there these 30% who scout for software's like ours online. Get to us by some hook or crook and then maybe end up giving the trial a shot. Our Main site is only of say 5-6 pages. These pages have basic info about our product , pricing and contact etc. What I wish to understand is that when one says" getting those keywords to the top of the engines rankings" who do you mean by these - I presume one means that get the keywords you want to compete for and then push in "Adwords" or better content pages? So If I want to rank well - then my websites should have good content pages you mean? Is that correct-? That means now I have to write good content on those keywords or around those keywords- without that there is no hope to come on good on engines right? Correct me here if I sway away from the actual meaning. Next I wish to have campaigns setup in google adwords keeping in mind those competitive keywords - here again does content on my website play a role? If I have no content and then have google adwords setup does that help? Please advice How long before I add good content pages and expect them to show up in my analytics etc? Thanks

8500+ seomoz errors and still rank one for high traffic keywords
I plugged a competitor into the campaign manager that is ranking #1 for many target keywords like "sprinkler parts" (18k broad, 720 exact) and "sprinklers"(550k broad, 4400 exact) and #2 for "sprinkler"(1mil broad, 8100 exact). This site has over 8500 errors on SEOmoz - I have spent a good deal of time fixing errors on all of our client websites and have gotten them down to 0 errors. I am just wondering if I have been wasting my time and if the errors that SEOmoz reports on even make a difference. How can a site rank for such high traffic keywords when it has 4k duplicate content and 4k duplicate page title errors? The site has 75 linking root domains according to opensiteexplorer. any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
