Root domain or subdomain when submitting to directories, also pr 3 and lower, is it bad to list to these directories?
-
Hello all, Should I use my root domain or sub domain when adding my site to local directories? I'm very new to this, so I just want to be sure, sub domains start with the www, right? I know all my listings should have the same NAP, and it makes sense to have the same root or sub domain listed as well, but I was wondering if I should try and help one type of domain if it starts to get a bad ratio of follow & no follow links. Also, do directories with a page rank of 3 or lower, or directories with a no follow link, bad for my sites rankings?

Hello Jeff and welcome to the land of Moz.
As to sub domains, yes www is a subdomain of www.example.com. But, my.example.com is a sub domain of example.com and your.domain.com is a subdomain of example.com. So, based on your question I am going to give you a question:
Have you set a preferred domain in GWMT, Bing, etc.? You need to tell them whether or not you prefer www.yoursite.com or yoursite.com otherwise these are seen as two sites. Now, the other thing you need to do is correctly set them in your .htaccess file if you are using Apache for example. If you are unsure of how, let the community know here or in another question.
Once that is done. Assuming you are only using your domain and not a sub domain, you will simply submit your preferred domain. The reason for this is: For ranking purposes, a domain and a sub domain are not treated as a single site/entity; they are treated as separate domains. So a link to one does not attribute anything to the other per se.
Hope it helps,

Hi Jeff,
First of all, as previously mentioned in another question of yours I would recommend redirecting from non-www to www or vice-versa. And after that using only one version of the URL to link to your website.
Now related to this question: I wouldn't bother myself with PR.
If working with directory listings I would go to the most popular ones from my business niche. For example here on SEOmoz we have a list of web directories which were recommended by mozzers: http://www.seomoz.org/directories
I would recommend you to read through the short text on that page, it will give you on overview where to submit your listing.
Greetings,
Istvan

Backlinks from ads on parked domains? Is this possible?
Hello Moz Friends, So as I was researching some competitive backlinks and I noticed a lot of backlinks that a clients competitor has are on parked domains and they appear to be google ads from some point. You know the pages that this page no longer exists, or hey do you want to buy this domain? and it has like 6 google ads on it? Yep those pages. My clients industry is construction and their competitor has links from zombie websites, foreign, websites and more. But the links are no longer on the page. Like when it was crawled, their ad was showing. Does this make any sense and is it usually temporary? Thank you for your thoughts friends!

Are directories still a valid practice? If so what are some of your favorite and most authoritative directories?
After combing over several competitor sites I have found many if not the majority of their links are from directories. I am curious to know if individuals/companies/seos etc. still use directories, if so what are some of the favorites?

Domain Question
Hello fellow SEOmozers! I'm trying to register a domain name that contains keywords for my business, however the .com is obviously taken (however its just a parked domain without a site) so I have an option to get either .co .us or .net I wanted to know if the domain extension makes any difference for the search engine or does having .com gives you an advantage over having .co .us or .net? Thanks for your input!!!

Page Authority vs. Domain Authority
Like many of you, I've spent a lot of time in Open Site Explorer analyzing our links and our competitors, and looking for more linking opportunities. Recently we've been focusing our SEO efforts on gaining links from high value .edu domains and so far we've been very successful. The DA of these links are high (80+), but the links are also coming through on low PA pages (typically 10-35). Are these links still worth while? When does a link not become worth it?
