301 redirects / clean urls
-
hello everyone, we moved our site to a new platform that has url rewrite feature. we are building out a spreadsheet of the old aspx urls and the corresponding page on the new site. my dev tells me that its not important to redirect the old page to the new "clean url" page which sounds a bit odd to me ..example below. okay. so he says its the same difference to 301 redirect this url: http://72.3.181.97/catalog/DesignerDogBeds.aspx to this urls: https://www.k9electronics.com/product.php?productid=3474 instead of this clean url: http://www.k9electronics.com/designer-dog-beds/ can anyone give me any feedback on this? thanks!

First, your dev is wrong. The url your dev has first is a dynamic url and you do not want that. You can spot dynamic url's by virtue of the ?, &, .cgi-bin etc. The problem is more in conversions than in a lack of indexing, etc.
You do want to redirect url to url and most believe you will get 90 to 99% of the juice. (My experience is that it is over 90%). The preference from what you provided would be the http://www.k9electronics.com/designer-dog-beds/
Lastly, since you are going down this road, I suggest you read this post by Dr. Pete. It gives good advice on eCommerce. I think based on your question you would find it very helpful.

Basically, you are asking 2 questions. Is it important to redirect, and what do we redirect to?
1. It is important to redirect old URL's, but only if those URL's are indexed. You see, people may still click on them, as they will still be in the search engines for a while. Of course, if the URL's are not indexed, you don't have to redirect anything. You are correct to use 301 redirects, and you will lose some link juice but it's better than nothing!
2. The best URL is an URL with relevant keywords. Relevant, so 'catalog' does not need to be in the URL. Your example of http://www.k9electronics.com/designer-dog-beds/ is the best URL. It's good because people will understand what your page is about, and search engines like that.
Good luck!

with 301 you will lose some of the link juice, but some will be transferred.
I don't remember where I have read regarding this issue, but if I remember well the number was something like 85% transferred? (Correct me If I am wrong)
Cheers,
Istvan

Hi k9byron,
First of all, the three links provided are three very different ones:
1. http://72.3.181.97/catalog/DesignerDogBeds.aspx - no result
2. https://www.k9electronics.com/product.php?productid=3474 - PetSafe PAC19-12069 Spray Refill - Citronella
3. http://www.k9electronics.com/designer-dog-beds/ - designer-dog-beds category
But IF I have understood the question well... Then you are asking which form to use for the redirect.
I would go to redirect the old page to the "clean url". The cleaner the url is, the easier is to optimize for. So go for that version if possible.
I hope it hepled,
Istvan

Hello!
To not lose link juice from the old URL's , the best method is to redirect old URL's to new URL's. It's a hard and consuming time work, but you will give relevance to all your new URL's.
Another method is to redirect only old categories into new ones, but it is very possible to lose link juice.
Hope that helps.

Sudden Drop in Rankings/Traffic/Organic Impressions Without a Penalty
Hi Moz community! I have a question about a local client in Raleigh, NC - http://paragonbuildinggroup.com This client came to us from another agency who had previously not done such a great job with the design/development of the site, or with the marketing of it, so we are somewhat limited in terms of what we can do on design, user experience, etc. But, the SEO is all still easy to tweak and we've been working on it for some time now. As of July 5th, their keyword rankings have dropped dramatically (we're talking from first page rankings to nothing, according to Authority Labs), and they've fallen completely off the map in the SERPs. Their local listing doesn't appear in search results anymore, and WMT is showing a drastic drop in impressions (from 457 on July 3rd to 92 on July 5th). There have been no manual penalties on the site, no recent major development work done, and from what I can see, no signs of hacking and no bad backlinks. The only thing I can see is that Mozcast showed an 83 degree day with some clouds and rain on July 5th, the day that our rankings dropped off, but I can't find any documentation showing what might have changed. Any insight as to what might be going on? I'm completely stumped!

Meta refresh - nojavascript url
seomox is telling me that I am getting a page that is not being indexed or crawled and since the crawl status code is 200 and there are no robots the meta-refresh url must be the problem. the meta refresh url is different than the on page report card url as it's the nojavascript url which my developer says should be ok. see his comments below. The is redirecting to http://mastermindtoys.com/store/nojavascript.html only in case if the JavaScript is disabled in the client browser. This is the right way to do it, I don’t understand why this might be a problem, otherwise MM has to implement Noscript pages that have a real content. I didn’t get what’s wrong about accessibility. The code 200 means it is accessible, and yes there is nothing to access if JavaScript is disabled on browser. I think there are no modern retail sites that would do any sensible business with the scripting disabled in browsers. The H1 is really present 2 times and second occurrence can be removed, though I highly doubt about importance of this change.Regarding duplicates – what URLs are considered duplicates? Can you please send me examples?I am not aware of canonical URL problem for MM site unless we consider old .asp links as duplicate links of the canonical product pages. I would appreciate if SEOMoz gave us an example what they mean.I suspect that the page is not getting indexed as a result of this or I'm just not getting a good score. Which is it?

Why does SEOmoz use /blog/content-title vs /category/content-title? Any difference?
Assume a brand new blog being designed and all other things equal. What are the pros & cons between using the url structure /blog/content-title vs. /category/content-title? Note:

Singular / Plural
Hi SEOmoz staff I'm doing on a French website that sells Wall Stickers. The main French keyword therefore is: stickers muraux (wall stickers) sticker mural (wall sticker) When you look at my homepage title; I've put the singular and plural in there. Do you think it hurts my website? Should I eliminate my least favorite one (= sticker mural)? Any other advice? Thank you! Jacob from Belgium X45qb.jpg
