What happens when you put an image in an H1 tag?
-
I am currently updating some H1 tags for my site but the tags are generated automatically by the text that is entered into a field on our content manager software. However because we need an image in this area as well, the entire field including the code for the image is surrounded by an H1 tag.
Is this bad for SEO?

Thank you Dan (and Bill).
In SEO talk, everything seems to boil down to getting ranked, but the more important thing, I've always thought, is helping readers (and the search engines) to understand what the page is about - but almost nobody talks about that.
-
In general its bad practice to put images in the H1. This doesn't mean if you just stuff a few keywords in them that you'll rank better either. But the Header tags are meant to hold text - text that accurately describes to the reader what they should expect to see below the header.
Bill's article on headers is fantastic.
And the original source from w3.org says:
"A heading element briefly describes the topic of the section it introduces...." - basically that it's meant for text. Source
So as Bill says, if you correctly set up a semantic relationship between the title, headers and content on the page, you can help users and engines understand what the page is "about" and thus rank better in that sense.
Hope that helps!!

Images on sub domain fed from CDN
I have a client that uses a CDN to fill images, from a sub domain ( images.domain.com). We've made sure that the sub domain itself is not blocked. We've added a robots.txt file, we're creating an image sitemap file & we've verified ownership of the domain within GWT. Yet, any crawler that I use only see's the first page of the sub domain (which is .html) but none of the subsequent URL's which are all .jpeg. Is there something simple I'm missing here?

Hiding h1 tags in Magento
Hi Moz Community, I know that hiding h1 tags isn't a good practice for SEO and google, but we have banners that look much nicer than the stock text Magento uses for its titles. The banners have the same text and the h1 is in the source code, just not visible on front end. The option Magento gives is "hide title on the page." So I'm not sure if this is actually the bad way to hide it or if it's fine for search engines. Thanks,

Hi Mozzers, Do you think there are any negative effects of having no images on a page but several hundreds words of text? (There is a logo image and call to action buttons). Thanks!

Does Bing support cross-domain canonical tags?
We have heard Bing takes canonical tags as hints, but do they support cross-domain canonical tags? I don't think this has ever been discussed? Does anyone have an answer or insight? Thanks!!

Canonical tag used on several pages?
Is it a bad idea to use rel=canonical from several pages back to one (if you are planning on no-indexing them)? Does this concentrate the “link juice” from those several pages back to one?
