Why do some serps have a + map symbol?
-
Hi from sunny but freezing wetherby UK..
Ive noticed when you enter "York solicitors" some listings have + Show map symbol. Hers is a screen shot to illustrate:

I'd like to know please what i would have to do to emulate this.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Again, David,
I've had a chance to talk this other with a few other Local SEOs, and here is the consensus of opinion on the Plus Box.
1. It's algorithmically generated - so nothing you can do to force a plus box on your listing.
2. That being said, following Google's general recommendations on this page might be useful:
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=92319&from=52171&rd=1
3. Also, be advised that there appears to be some kind of a new crackdown going on regarding plus boxes and certain businesses who have lost Google's trust seeing their plus boxes disappear. This is a new issue and I don't have any solid data on it. But, it leads me to ask...did you have a plus box before and see it go missing? Curious!
Hope this reply helps some.
Miriam

Hi David, The Google Plus Box was first rolled out in 2006. Here is a Matt Cutts post on the topic from way back when: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/new-google-ui-feature-plus-box/ Here is an excellent sleuthing post from Mike Blumenthal in 2008 about figuring out the sources for bad data in the plus box: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2008/03/06/google-plus-box-where-does-the-wrong-data-come-from/ The trouble with looking for documentation on this right now is that anything you search for related to 'google' and 'plus' is bringing up studies of Google+ and not the old Google plus box. I'm going to dig a little deeper, David. I'll return to this thread when I have some more info to share with you.

At least one other site has google maps embedded, but that one is using an iframe. The site in question is using javascript and has a google maps API key in the header.
Both have claimed Google places listings with the location indicated.

Hi David
Had a quick look in the SERP's and my guess is that they 'seem' to be the only page one result that has the map embedded on their site. http://www.guestwalker.co.uk/find-us/google-map/
It's just a guess from me - but I'd give that a try and hopefully google will add that map link for your clients site.
edit : Have a look at the clients google places page and also look into rich snippets if you've not done so already. I ran the URL that you mentioned through http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?view=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.guestwalker.co.uk but they are not using rich snippets btw

Google SERPs Show Different Title
Hi Guys, Can anyone please help with my situation. My domain is www.greedybins.com.au. I had title setup in every pages differently, and it has been 2 months since I made the changes. I keep checking by using site:www.greedybins.com.au in search. So far, only 1 title that been show correctly in SERPs. I used SEO Yoast before, I changed to All In One SEO Pack plugin, the titles are changing, but still not accurate as I made it. Somehow Google altered it by itself. I have tried fetch and submit sitemap couple times from Google Search Console. Could anyone please advise?

Are backlinks the reason for my site's much lower SERP ranking, despite similar content?
Hi all, I'm trying to determine why my site (surfaceoptics.com) ranks so much lower than my competitor's sites. I do not believe the site / page content explains this differential in ranking, and I've done on-site / on-page SEO work without much or any improvement. In fact I believe my site is very similar in quality to competitor sites that rank much higher for my target keyword of: hyperspectral imaging. This leads me to believe there is a technical problem with the site that I'm not seeing, or that the answer lies in our backlink profile. The problem is that I've compared our site with 4 of our competitors in the Open Site Explorer and I'm not seeing a strong trend when it comes to backlinks either. Some competitors have more links / better backlink profiles but then other sites have no external links to their pages and lower PA and DA and still outrank us by 30+ positions. How should I go about determining if the problem is backlinks or some technical issue with the site?

Weird SERPS
Hello mozerz, I have a question regarding my SERPS that I just can't figure out, maybe one of you had this problem before or has encounter a similar problem. So I have a website on Scotland, and I have a page for each major city so the structure is scotland/city/glasgow or scotland/city/edinburgh or scotland/city/aberdeen. Now every city page is w3 validated, page speed validated, has around 1000 words of text, all with h1, h2, image alt, nice title and nice description, all have grade A on moz campaign, original content, all with canonical links, no ads or spammy links. The title , description, h1, h2 and img alt are the same only replaced Aberdeen with Edinburgh or Glasgow. or so on ... so all pages are identically just replaced the city word. In terms of link building I have done none ! and in terms of promotion I have done none... so theres no scenario where by I have done something more for one city then the other Now my problem is that all cities are doing well in SERPS, only Glasgow has come up till 14 position and then has dropped suddenly to 74, and remained there for 2 weeks now. I know this sounds like a penalty, but it can't be because I haven't done anything, I've tried all the tools possible to analyze the Glasgow page, though that it was a code problem or a broken link or that google-bot doesn't get up to this page to crawl it and classify it, but all is fine. Can anyone suggest anything that I might do. I'm 100% sure that I have no penalty, I've checked even the webmaster tools, open site explorer to see if anyone tried to link to my site with spammy links ( has happened before, I had about 1000 links about viagra from a competitor pointing to my site ) .

Image map crawlability
Hey Mozzer's, I'm reviewing a moving site which utilizes an image map for their service areas. As I'm new to image mapping how should I diagnose them for crawlability, effectiveness, code (which appears correct using HTML & alt text tag), what should I be looking for, etc? I'm trying to determine the effectiveness of the image map links compared to including some regular lateral links on the page. Page: http://bit.ly/KOOtgN Thanks in advance for all advice and insights.

Business name not showing on Google Maps Satellite View
Hi Everyone, When you go into Google Maps and look at the satellite view, you'll notice business names on some, but not all, businesses--like on the roof of the building. Where do I need to go to get this to work for my business? My Google Places pages are setup properly but as far as I can tell there is no setting for this. Is it the Service Area setting? Currently I have it set to "Yes, this business serves customers at their locations." Perhaps I need to set this to "No." Many thanks, Robert

How to create a tree-like structure map of a website?
Hi all, The online marketing manager requested to make a tree-like map of the website. He means that he would like to see a graphical representation of the website and his contents. This way we will be able to see if there are internal link issues. The problem is that there are thousands of pages and many subdomains, manual labour would make this a very tedious task. If you would get this question, how would you try to solve this? Any software recommendation?

Mapping Internal Links (Which are causing duplicate content)
I'm working on a site that is throwing off a -lot- of duplicate content for its size. A lot of it appears to be coming from bad links within the site itself, which were caused when it was ported over from static HTML to Expression Engine (by someone else). I'm finding EE an incredibly frustrating platform to work with, as it appears to be directing 404's on sub-pages to the page directly above that subpage, without actually providing a 404 response. It's very weird. Does anyone have any recommendations on software to clearly map out a site's internal link structure so that I can find what bad links are pointing to the wrong pages?
