What is the best Practice for Adding Social Buttons to your Sites from SEO Perspective?
-
Hey Guys,
As you all know there are many social buttons out there that can be added to your website. Facebook Like button, Twitter's Tweet and Follow buttons, Google +1, and AddThis buttons are just a few to mention.
All of these buttons can be customized, eg. you may choose to point your FB Like button to your homepage, to a specific inner page, or to your Facebook Brand Page. Same with your +1 button. Moreover, you may choose to add Twitter and Google+ Follow buttons to your site's pages, and so on.
My questions are very simple:
Is there any best practice for adding social buttons to your site from SEO perspective? if yes,
Which social buttons to add?
Where is the ideal place for them on your page?
Where these buttons should be pointing to? your homepage? specific inner page? or to your official brand pages?
Thanks in Advance,
Yogev.

Thanks James! Great tutorial. I'm going to test this box on one of our sites.

Though I'm not aware of any technical impact from where or how you choose to place social buttons, I've found the greatest share rates to be when you prompt the user with a call-to-action at the end of a piece of content. The best way to do this is with a box that slides in somewhere non-intrusively at the end of the article (if that's the content we're referring to here). There's a great tutorial for this here.

Thanks Eugene for your great advise. Would you add the social buttons to your Thank You Pages?

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. It's very helpful.
I agree, there is no substitute for high quality content, and you always have to fit your social activity to your target audience.
However, when all things being equal - assuming you already have a great content and your content fits your customers - you still have to choose which social buttons will generate you the most SEO value. If Google +1s have more SEO value than FB likes, you may decide to place the +1 button first, make it bigger, etc.
Do you know by any chance if there is such hierarchy between the social buttons from SEO perspective? Are FB shares more valuable than FB likes, or perhaps tweets and +1s are the most valuable ones? Which social buttons are most likely to increase your ranking on Google and other SEs?
Cheers,
Y.

Present the buttons to your visitor at the point in time your visitor is most likely to want to follow you. (We called this the "point of maximum like")
For most ecommerce sites, this is not before they make the purchase. Don't distract them with social stuff when your focus should be on converting them to a purchase. Give them an option at the end of the checkout or in a follow up email. We increased social shares and follows doing this by such a large percentage that made our previous efforts (share buttons on all pages) seem insignificant.

Adding them to your page with no applicable content on the social networks provides no value. Like a ferrari without gas.
Before you work through the exercise ask yourself, are your customers or clients going to really utilize them on your site. Are they going to click on them? I see so many companies that put them in a high profile position and they get no activity. WASTE OF VALUABLE SPACE. If they aren' being used on your site but they do create alot of online activity from the social network,s get them connected to the home page in a lower profile position (footer) so you get the link juice value but you don't take up valuable space....
Doesn't matter where the buttons are on your page for SEO.
Add whatever social buttons you have that have activity and fit your customers, clients or vendors profiles....on the business to business side, our linked in activity has been very valuable. On our consumer side, facebook and twitter have been very valuable.
Home page pointing always makes the most sense for general seo. But if you have a special offer or something specific that you are trying to generate value or action, then move them to a specific URL landing page to optimize that value or action.
Hope this helps....cheers.

How do your direct social media to use another picture when the web site is shared?
I set up a web site to raise funds for my nephew(www.helpmatt.org) and social media randomly picks a picture on the share. Unfortunately this picture is from happier times and sends a different message than we would like to prospective contributors. Is there a way to set the picture that is used when this web site link is shared on social media? www.helpmatt.org

Facebook and SEO
Hello, recently we've noticed my companies Facebook page (www.facebook.com/dishcostsless) is not being crawled by Google. When you type in DISH Costs Less Facebook it does not show up, even when you type in the exact URL there are no search results. We used screaming frog to check out the back end of the page and there are no meta tags like there are on most FB pages. Also we noticed there were two re-directs; one from the http page to the https page, and the other directed the https page to the http page creating one giant cycle. We think this has something to do with the problem but not sure. Is there anyone who has had a similar issue, and how did you fix it? We'd love to be assured that the search engines are tracking our interactions on Facebook for SEO purposes.

I used Hoot, but found it difficult to include Linked In, and several other social media sites. Somebody has experience using BUFFER? Ive read about it, and it seems great! Would you recommend it? Thanks for your comments,

Facebook 'SEO', Likes and Fans
I spent a bit of time this morning combing Google looking for some documentation on SEO for Facebook, specifically the value of 'likes', when liking one's status, how that effects the visibility of a given post and basically the criteria for creating whatever they deem a post to have gone 'viral'. I'm convinced there has to be some answers for my first two questions... ....somewhere. Likewise, I can appreciate if there's nothing available to answer my third question pertaining to 'viral criteria'. Nevertheless, if anyone has any resources/documentation that could provide me some insight into how FB interprets 'likes', how an increased number of 'likes' may lead to greater visibility and (more or less) the mechanics of how this interacts with the entire Facebook structure, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading, I look forward to the responses!

Does Twitter and Facebook feeds help SEO
For a new site, I want to feed in Twitter updates and Facebook posts onto the page. I regularly update these feeds. I'm using PHP to directly integrate with the two sites API and grab the data. Is this a good idea? Will it help SEO as its fresh content? Is it a good or bad idea to have a social media feed page on the site that grabs content from these sites?

Twitter and SEO
Hello Mozzers, I am trying to determine the effectiveness of using twitter as an SEO tactic. A site in my niche (healthcare job boards) is ranking very well for a handful of head terms. Their backlink profile is okay, but not amazing. But one thing that stands out to me is their approach to twitter, http://www.physemp.com/socialTwitter.html. It looks like they send an automated feed of their jobs to these specific twitter handles. Each of the handles has over 2,000 followers (some are legit some are bots). The site ranks for some highly competitive head terms (see attached). Can any of their ranking success be attributed to these various twitter handles? Is Google seeing these twitter feeds and associating high follower count and high tweet frequency with the URL attached to each account? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Thanks in advanced! lMbkS

What are different strategies to achieve a strong social presence for clients in multiple industries? How do you best leverage your time?
I just finished watching the mozinar on "The End of Search Without Social" mozinar, and I have so many points that I want to implement for our agency. The problem I see is that we have clients in about 20 different industries. How do you create strong social relationships in each of these industries for your clients? It seems that you could have more influence if you built all into your own personal profiles or your SEO company's to create that great fan base. Anyone have success in doing it across the board? Thanks!
