Big Rank Drop - Is My Site Spammy?
-
Like many others one of our niche sites - aluminumeyewear.com got slammed in the recent algo updates (4/18). All of our pages dropped at least 40/50 places which seems like a penalty to me. The site still ranks for its name thankfully.
I'm trying to figure out if this is an over-optimization penalty, or a devaluing of back links or both.
I would be grateful if I could get some feedback as to whether you feel the site is over optimized and how I could check if sources of back links have been penalized which in turn has effected us?
Thanks in advance!

waiting to see if they can be removed.
otherwise I'm kinda stuck as to how best acquire those elusive high-quality links.
-
You have 101 unique root domains, and 95 of them are all the same spun article? Yeah, that's not good. If you can get the network to drop the article, I'd do it now. If you can't, build up some higher-quality, diverse links as fast as you can. If those numbers are accurate, you are in danger.
-
GWT shows 101 domains linking in - probably 95 of those are all domains that are listing an article which points to the homepage and a product page. The two domains I mentioned earlier have 40 links each because of the way the article was tagged, all of the other domains a providing two links each.
-
If you got the warning, you need to pay attention to it. 4/18 wasn't the over-optimization drop (not to say you aren't over-optimized, but that hit this week). There was a 4/19-ish Panda update (3.5), but that seems relatively minor. You more likely got caught up in some of the new link culling.
Having 40+ links per site doesn't make them the culprit. I'd be much more inclined to see what the 3rd party did and if they did something massive scale. Get a list from them, if you can (since it takes us a while to update the data, and we don't see all low-value links).
-
I'm trying to find out if the guy who submitted those articles is able to pull them - seems like the easiest and cleanest thing to do.
Remember we're not Gatorz the company, just a very good dealer for them. I've found it very difficult in the past to get interaction with customers when your not the actual brand, with this particular product there isn't any dealer loyalty, customers just look for the best price.
-
those articles as northstarheadgasket and 4homebuilder look like they were written for search engines (as in, nobody would normally post an article there for any other reason than to get links - because nobody actually goes to those sites to find articles on sunglasses).
I don't have any idea if the Search Engines do it, but they ought to value a link from how much real traffic the source page has. Therefore, a page that has a lot of traffic, is likely to only put on only good quality links relevant to the market - and real users might actually use those links. Or perhaps they could value a link based on how often it is used. Of course perhaps this could be manipulated by bots, but it would be another step in the right direction (instead of just knowing how to insert links, spammers would have to know how to program bots to click on certain links, or they would have to do it manually).
You have a cool product, and could probably get (and perhaps have) lots of interaction on facebook, and could have a cool blog, with videos, product demos, and with weird subject like "10 coolest celebrities wearing Gatorz" and "Gatorz Guys are Girl Magnets" or for the girls: "Gucci is old and busted - Go Gatorz Girlz!" or the other side of that "Every Gucci needs a Gatorz"
-
I should also mention we did receive an 'un-natural links' message in GWT right at the time of the drop.
The top 3 entries are:
bbb.org - 103
4homebuilder.info - 43
At first I thought Google was referring to the bbb links as there should only be one inbound from them for our business listing. However the reason there is more is due to the way the BBB display results for each city. For example we are located in Tigard OR but will still come up for businesses in Boring OR - its because by default they return results for any distance from that particular location - if you use the pages distance filter then we'll disappear!
The other two are article directories I believe. A third party was doing link building for us and spinning some articles.
Is it possible this is the more likely cause?
-
At first glance content may appear thin but it isn't. All of our copy is unique and there are other useful interior pages such as this and this. In addition our product shots are unique and we produced custom videos (see attached). Every other dealer use stock copy and photos.
I've been selling sunglasses online for 7 years and as a product there is only so much you can write about them unless they have standout features which in our case is something we have already covered in our copy.
I would love inbound links from both brands, however neither offer an online dealer list on their site.
-
I agree I can tone down keyword usage - up until the algo change we ranked #1 for aluminum sunglasses and always top 3-5 for the two brand names.
We are the leading online account for Gatorz, so really it was people looking at us for ideas rather than the other way around.
-
Hi,
I agree you have overoptimized. I also think you may have a different problem, or at least you did.
Your redirect of gatorzwarehouse is working today, but did not work yesterday for me.
Maybe a fluke, but something to look into.
-
Hi,
Agree with Alan. On the homepage, you try too hard to rank for 'Aluminum Sunglasses' - it's mentioned 6 times just in that short group of text. Except for the Gatorz and Liquid Eyewear pages, there is very little content on the site overall (even these pages still have very little content). I'd develop some more content; be it a blog, a series of 'how-to' type posts (how to clean your sunglasses, how to take proper care of your sunglasses, what types of sunglasses are best for certain situations/environments etc) or more information on product types, brands etc.
According to OSE, your site has very low inbound links as well. I'd work on getting some links from some really good sources (official brand websites as an official retailer for instance).
Hope that helps!

Hello Mac. Nice looking site Spelling error in sentence 3 You really have overdone your keywords on the front page On the interior pages you did the same and the content is thin. Get advice from people who are doing well in ecommerce Look at your competitors for ideas

Is there proof that disavowing backlinks in GSC help to boost rankings in Google?
Hi Guys Let's say you have a website and you got some questionable back links or lower quality ones. Does anyone have proof that after disavowing back links helped in the rankings or had some positive effects? I am concerned that Google will place our website on their radar and instead possibly demote it or smth. Lastly, if disavowing is the way to go what criteria do you use to disavow backlinks? So if you get questionable back links over time, should you disavow ongoing as well? If so how often? Cheers John

Active, Old Large site with SEO issues... Fix or Rebuild?
Looking for opinions and guidance here. Would sincerely appreciate help. I started a site long, long ago (1996 to be exact) focused on travel in the US. The site did very well in the search results up until panda as I built it off templates using public databases to fill in the blanks where I didn't have curated content. The site currently indexes around 310,000 pages. I haven't been actively working on the site for years and while user content has kept things somewhat current, I am jumping back into this site as it provides income for my parents (who are retired). My questions is this. Will it be easier to track through all my issues and repair, or rebuild as a new site so I can insure everything is in order with today's SEO? and bonus points for this answer ... how do you handle 301 redirects for thousands of incoming links 😕 Some info to help: CURRENTLY DA is in the low 40s some pages still rank on first page of SERPs (long-tail mainly) urls are dynamic (I have built multiple versions through the years and the last major overhaul was prior to CMS popularity for this size of site) domain is short (4 letters) but not really what I want at this point Lots of original content, but oddly that content has been copied by other sites through the years WHAT I WANT TO DO get into a CMS so that anyone can add/curate content without needing tech knowledge change to a more relevant domain (I have a different vision) remove old, boilerplate content, but keep original

Why would a blank page rank? What am I missing about this page?
In terms of content, this page is blank. Yes, there's a sidebar and footer, but no content. I've seen a page like this rank before. I'm curious if they're implementing something on the back-end I don't realize or if this is just a fluke? Etc. Also, the DA of the site is only a 15, so I don't think that's the reason. http://www.thenurselawyer.com/component/tags/tag/20-pasco-county-personal-injury-lawyers.html Thanks, Ruben

Why did this fabric site disappear for "fabric" and why can't we get it back?
Beverlys.com used to rank on the first page for "fabric." I'm trying to get the date of their demise, but don't have it yet so I can't pinpoint what Google update might have killed them but I can guess. In doing a backlink analysis, there were hundreds of poor quality, toxic sites pointing to them. We have carefully gone through them all and submitted a disavow request. They are now on page 9 from nowhere to be found a week ago. But, of course, that's not good enough. They are on page 2 for "fabric online" and "quilt fabric." So Google doesn't completely hate them. But doesn't love them enough even for those terms. Any suggestions? They are rebuilding the site to use a different ecommerce platform with new content and new structure. They will also be incorporating the blog within the site and I've advised them on many other ways to attract traffic and backlinks. That's coming. But for now, any suggestions and help will be much appreciated. Something has got to be holding them back for that one gem of a keyword. Also, I would like to know what experiences others have had with the disavow request form. Does Google absolutely hold you to making every attempt you can at getting those links removed? ANd how does it know? No one responds so it seems to be such a waste of time. And many now actually charge to remove your links. Thoughts? Thanks everyone!

Our ranking as not returned after penalty, Why?
Hi, We have had a Google action against us for over a year. After many "SEO Company's" we found someone who help us remove (December 2013) the action. Which was due to our bad back link profile. We have 100% improved our content for our website, as Google has requested. We are active within social media, we add relevant content to our blog and we clean up our desk after we finish work 🙂 After looking at Moz tools we have great results, sometimes even better than our competitors. But we are still not getting or improving on our traffic, if anything its decreasing. Is anyone else in the same position? or has anyone recovered from a similar situation? Josh

Site dropping in rank even through there are more backlinks being added
Hello, One of my client's sites is ranking lower than he should. This happened when we took off backlinks (20 little blogs, several site-wide paid links. It really dropped the site, but it had to be done. Since then we've increased his # of root domains by 10% through white hat link building in his non-competitive niche, and rankings are still poor. I know that's not much in the way of added backlink value, but we're working on it. My question is, how have the recent (and coming) updates possibly effected us. We want to take the remaining problem areas off right away, but another drop in traffic is not a good idea. Even though the blogs (see below) have no backlinks of themselves, they cause drops when taken off) He still has -20 little blog backlinks w/ a quarter of them being exact match anchor text.

-1 sitewide paid link - an image, exact match alt tag anchor text
-1 non-site-wide paid links that is an image near the footer, exact match alt tag anchor text.
-3 links on a domain, this one looks fairly editorial, but there are a bunch of paid links on that page. Changing to non-exact-match anchor text
-2 links on two domains that look completely editorial with no other paid links on that page. non-exact-match anchor text -70 backlinks total with about 1/3 being problematic. How does this site look in regards to updates and when to take links off without tanking our site even more? Thanks.0 -
Competitors have local "mirror" sites
I have noticed that some of my competitors have set up "mirror" homepages set up for different counties, towns, or suburbs. In one case the mirror homepages are virtually identical escept for the title and in the other case about half of the content id duplicate and the other half is different. both of these competors have excellent rankings and traffic. I am surprised about these results, does anyone care to comment about it and is this a grey hat technique that is likely to be penalized eventually. thx Diogenes

What does Youtube Consider Duplicate content and will it effect my ranking/traffic?
What does youtube consider duplicated content? If I have a power point type video that I already have on youtube and I want to change the beginning and end call to action, would that be considered duplicate content? If yes then how would this effect my ranking/youtube page. Will it make a difference if I have it embedded on my blog?
