Plummeting traffic and rankings for main KWs
-
Hi there mozzers,
You have been so helpful in the past and we'd really appreciate your insights into our problem... we have two data recovery companies in the UK, one has been established for 11 years (dataclinic.co.uk) , the second (datlabs.co.uk) is a subsidiary that's been around for 5 years.
Dataclinic has always ranked highly, usually in the top 1-5 on page one for relevant KWs and towards the end of last year we had traffic of approx 1,800 UK visitors/month - now we're down to only 600. Week on week we're falling and I have started to dread the monitoring checks. We're slipping in the rankings too. As our business relies almost 100% on Google rankings our phones just aren't ringing.
In contrast our subsidiary company datlabs is climbing up the rankings and drawing more traffic - but unfortunately nothing like enough to compensate for the decline in the main company's traffic. We have used the same kinds of marketing strategies for both but have invested more energy into social for dataclinic, and more energy into local for datlabs. I'd say that our strategies have been less than sparkling clean - we've paid for directory links but not with the really spammy directories. We're at a loss to understand what has happened to have had such a dramatic and devastating effect - please help!!
Thanks so much
Sue

Hi there Russ
Thanks so much for your reply, you've given me lots of food for thought. You're right, we definitely need to think about how to improve the site design and the UX. It does look very jaded in comparison to some of our larger competitors.
We've recently done some KW research and have identified several new phrases we want to optimise now, which will shift the balance away from the two you highlighted. We're still looking into the best way to link build for these without relying on paid links as we have in the past. I think I'll look for some inspiration from our competitors' link profiles. I've also joined buzzstream today which I think may help.
Thanks once again for taking the time to reply - you've done your good deed for the day!

Hi Sue
Had a quick look at the sites, and did a reverse ip lookup too since I was curious if both were hosted on the same server(which they are not). I then noticed that you need to redirect the following :
to
You also have a .com version which is identical(as far as I could see from the quick look I had) to your .co.uk site - are you only accepting business from the UK and are you only interested in ranking on Google UK? If the answer is yes then I'd advise you to redirect the .com site to the .co.uk and/or implement canonical tags so that Google knows which site is the primary one. These kinds of duplicate content issues can and do affect rankings.
Another bit of advice is while I'm not going to get into the whole debate over paid links, I will say that if you use your company/domain name as the anchor text for paid listings in quality directories then you'll be far less likely to be penalised.
If you need some help with the redirect code and implementation just let us know
edit : and take out those keyword meta tags!

A gradual loss in rankings normally means that your competitors are slowly but surely beating you and/or Google is slowly but surely devaluing your links. I would have to look at your analytics to be certain, but the following lends some credence to that theory:
1. Your anchor text is over optimized for the keyword "hard drive recovery", approximately 58% of all of your links have this anchor text.
2. Your anchor text is over optimized for the keyword "data recovery", approximately 56% of your inbound MozRank comes from links with this anchor text.
3. You have a lot of questionable links - likely paid or rented - that Google is either devaluing or penalizing you for.In addition, your site definitely needs a design refresh if it is going to compete with much more attractively designed sites like http://www.krollontrack.co.uk/

Should ALL of my blogposts be focussed on my main target keywords for my site?
Hi everyone. I am an interior designer and I'm looking to boost my rankings locally for my target keywords (eg: Interior designer in Cheltenham) and I'm wondering about whether my blog posts should all be planned out with this (and other similar, location based) keywords in mind. For example, should I always make my target keyword for each blog post something related to 'interior design in xxx' or should I look for other keywords just related to my field? Eg: interior design tips, furniture guides, paint colour advice etc, just because it is related? As an example, I am planning a blog post to go on my website which will be about a trip I'm taking to Copenhagen. Could my keyword therefore just be something like 'interior design', and this would be okay? Thanks for reading! Lauren

Does Google do keyword matching when deciding whether to rank a page?
Hi, another newbie question on keyword research and selection (can't find any information on-line with this low level of detail)... If I've decided that my primary keyword for a given product page is the product name, something like 'AquaPower wet and dry cordless vacuum cleaner', can I assume that it isn't worth additionally optimising the page for 'cordless vacuum' as this has a phrase match in the primary keyword? Is it still worth additionally optimising for 'wet and dray vacuum' which has a broad match within the primary keyword or is Google bright enough to drop the intervening word 'cordless' when deciding whether to rank my page? Thanks for any guidance on this.

Why do my keyword ranking differ from the results on Google ?
I've been working on a specific campaign for a couple of days, and been noticing that my keyword ranking is much different on my campaign than in reality. I tried my keyword on Google (with the same settings I have on my campaign) and my keyword ranks at #5 instead of not in 50, as indicated on my campaign. Can someone give me a hint on this issue ? Thank you !

Domain Change, Lost ranking on 1 keyword
Hey guys, Long time follower of the Q&A forum, but don't post too often. I'm having an issue I never came across. We changed a domain from mpbuilderscincy.com to mpcincinnati.com. We did the 301 redirect and all the SEO flowed through pretty well. Most pages didn't even change in file structure so we didn't need to do page redirects for the most part. Anyway, long story short, we are seeing the same rankings as we had before now (it's been about 2 months) except for 1 and only 1 keyword. It's "Home Remodeling Cincinnati". We dropped from page 2, to page 11 on Google and it won't budge. Now on Yahoo and Bing, we are right back where we were before already with that keyword. But Google just refuses to bump us back to where we were before the change. The Home Remodeling page: http://www.mpcincinnati.com/Residential-Services/Home-Remodeling.aspx has an on page grade of A for that keyword and we have it as one of our main keywords on the home page of the site (title, h1, alt tags, etc). No errors on the page. I mean it looks pretty clean for this page as far as SEO except for 1 notice that mentions the 301 canonical redirect. We uploaded the new sitemap right away. I just can't put a thumb on it and wondering if you guys had any tips. Thanks, Chris

Should I 'nofollow' the pages on my site I want to rank the highest??
I have a lot of pages on my site & I was wondering if I would be better off tagging the pages that are most important to me nofollow. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks

Specific Keyword Ranking Advice
Hi Folks, We're trying to optimize the page (http://alabu.com/goat-milk-soap/) for the keyword "goat milk soap". Our page used to rank #1 before Panda (actually our home page did, not the page I'm trying to optimize on now). Now we're around rank 25. I've followed all the guidelines for on-page optimization I know, and I've done everything I can think of. We're currently executing a link building campaign but that obviously takes time. Does anyone have any advice? Is there anything else I can do to improve our ranking? Thanks, Hal

How do you check your KW rankings?
I'm currently using the PRO campaigns to track my main keywords. However, I'm trying to do some research on KW opportunities, and having no luck finding a way to conveniently check rankings for new keywords. What tool do you use to get ranking results for large keyword lists?
