One thing we've also had some success with is signing up with the major listing aggregators like Localeze. This is especially helpful if you have multiple locations as it gives you a way to easily manage your NAP information.

I second Tim's suggestion of thoroughly reading David Mihm's 2011 Local Search Ranking Factors report. Some things have changed in the past year since the report was published, but the basic information remains the same.
I like to approach Local SEO from a mindset of healthy, thorough promotion rather than manipulation. This will stand you in good stead for the long haul. If you are a beginner at this, I can offer some rule-of-thumb tips to get you started off on the right foot.

In order to qualify for inclusion in Google Places, you need a business name, a unique local area code phone number (not a toll free or redirected number) and a dedicated street address (not a shared address, not a P.O. box, not a virtual address. These three elements are commonly referred to as your NAP (name, address, phone number).

The number one rule in Local is not to violate any part of the Google Places Quality Guidelines. See:

Learn the guidelines by heart and revisit them often to check for Google's not infrequent updates.

Be absolutely consistent in your publication of your NAP. Make sure it is identical on your website, your Place Page, other local business listings and any reference to you anywhere on the web. Inconsistent NAP can lead to duplicate and merged Google Place Pages, which are a giant pain in the neck. At the outset of any Local SEO campaign search for existent listings and make sure the data is accurate. If it isn't, try to get it fixed.

Your website is your top Local Search ranking factor. It needs to be beautifully structured and properly optimized for Local Search. Put your major effort into creating the best site you can.

Get listed in the major local indexes including Google Places.

Once you've gotten your business listed, work on citation building and review encouragement. These things help you to rank, too.

Depending on the competitiveness of your industry and locale, you may also need to engage in some linkbuilding to help with your rankings.

What I have found to be one of the major areas of time/money investment for most local businesses is in quality, creative copywriting. Because of the power of your website, its words are of great value. Initial and ongoing copywriting will need to be part of most Local SEO strategies.
Your probably already guessed this, Adam, but basically, Local SEO involves a lot of creativity and hard work. There are no tricks or shortcuts. Just genuine effort. With the right mindset, you can outrank your competitors and serve your customers well.

I would suggest you read through David Mihm's Local Search Ranking Factors. It's almost a year old now, but there is still a lot of insight that can be gained from it.
As with organic search results, local rankings are influenced by a huge number of factors. There are some basic steps like selecting the right categories and claiming your listing that play a very important role, but things like the authority of your homepage, the number of matching listings on other directories (like Yelp, CitySearch, etc.) and the number and quality of reviews on your Places page can all have an impact on results as well.

Is Google creating meta descriptions on the fly?
I'm doing some competitor analysis for a client. I'm looking at the client's title tags and meta descriptions for specific search results, in comparison to their main competitor. I'm trying to establish if the client is ranking higher due to better relevance, or just because they have higher PA and DA. It appears to be the latter. Observations: For both the client and their competitor, their home pages appear in the results much more frequently than specific landing pages The meta description Google chooses to display in the search results for the home page does not always match the ACTUAL meta description for the page and appears to vary depending on the specific search query Questions: Does Google create meta descriptions on the fly? Is this an example of Google using semantic search? And if so, why are we bothering to type customised meta descriptions for specific pages, if Google is just going to recreate them anyway? Is Google displaying results of the home pages simply because they cannot find pages more relevant (ie. if we produced landing pages more relevant to these specific search queries, would Google rank them higher)?

We'll remove all content from this news section http://www.99acres.com/articles/real-estate-news and upload unique news, might be possible we use graph/chart and images from some other news site and other sources but the content will be unique and fresh. My website is not ranking for primary keywords in Google
I need help regarding some SEO strategy that need to be implemented to my website http://goo.gl/AiOgu1 . My website is a leading live chat product, daily it receives around 2000 unique visitors. Initially the website was impacted by manual link penalty, I cleaned up lot of backlinks, the website revoked from the penalty some where around June'14. Most of the secondary and longtail Keywords started ranking in Google, but unfortunately, it do not rank well for the primary keywords like (live chat, live chat software, helpdesk etc). Since I have done lot of onsite changes and even revamped the content but till now I dont find any improvement. I am unable to understand where I have got structed.

Google Places - Advanced Question
Hi All, Ive found multiple threads about previous issues but I haven't found any tailored to my specific question.I know there are a large amount of factors so I wanted to see if any other individuals had ran into this previously. We are currently in a centralized position in a major city. We are discussing moving the main office about 15 miles away into another city, moving us out of the main city where we have been for the past 3 years. The city where we are currently located has a lot more GEO search volume compared to the new city search terms and variants of. If we move will our local rankings drop when someone searches in the city where we were previously? How long would it take for this ranking to fall? Or would we still rank because we are moving a short distance away and have a large amount of citations there? I know we would need to change over all our online directories, on page etc..Any other suggestions on a smooth transition? I know there are many factors that go into this and any past experience, guidance and/or assistance is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I have one or two competitors (in the UK) in my field who buy expired 1 - 8 year old domains on random subjects (SEO, travel, health you name it) and they are in the printing business and they stick 1 - 2 articles (unrelated to what was on there before) on these and that's it. I think they stick with PA and DA above 30 and most have 10 – 100 links so well used expired domains, hosted in the USA and most have different Ip’s although they now have that many (over 70% of their backlink profile) that some have the same ip. On further investigation none of the blogs have any contact details but it does look like they have been a little smart here and added content to the about us (similar to I use to run xxx but now do xxx) also they have one or two tabs with content on (article length) that is on the same subject they use to do and the titles are all the same content. So basically they are finding expired 1 – 10 year old domains that have only been expired (from what I can see) 6 months max and putting 1 – 2 articles on the home page in relation with print (maybe adding a third on the subject the blog use to cover), add 1 – 3 articles via tabs at the top on subjects the sites use to cover, registering the details via xbybssgcf@whoisprivacyprotect.com and that’s it. They have been ranking via this method for the last couple of years (through all the Google updates) and still do extremely well. Does Google not have any way to combat link networks other than the stupid stuff such as public link networks, it just seems that if you know what you are doing you get away, if your big enough you get away with it but the middle of the ground (mum and pop sites) get F*** over with spam pointing to there site that no spammer would dream of doing anyway?

Multiple Locations Google Places (URL's)?
I'm managing a restaurant chain with 10 locations. Can they all share the home page url of the corporate site in Google Places or is it better to link each location url separately? Meaning can I use www.company.com for all locations in Google places for all locations or is it better to go with www.company.com/location.html for each location. The page authority of the home page is 60 while individual location pages the page authority is in the 20's. Hope this makes sense. Thanks
