Help on Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization
-
i ran the on page test and i got the avoid keyword self-canabilzation alert
one example is for http://www.deporvillage.com/shimano
maybe is because a'm not a native speaking english person but i do not understand what it exactly means
the targeted keyword for this page is shimano and the alert i got for the links like the one below that i have in my page
http://www.deporvillage.com/ciclismo/zapatillas-shimano which has a anchor text like zapatillas ciclismo shimano

I think Sven's essentially correct, although I suspect the word "Shimano" is what we're flagging. You've got the main Shimano page that splits out into sub-pages, and every link for the sub-pages has "Shimano" in the anchor text. The problem is that it IS keyword cannibalization, in a sense, and yet it also makes perfect sense in this situation.
I think this is pretty common in search pages, and probably isn't a big issue. Honestly, internal search pages and Google don't always get along in general, so it can be tricky. You could draw "Shimano" out into a header and then not use it in every piece of anchor text (it could start to look excessive), but practically speaking, I doubt it's going to have much impact either way.

Indeed!
In case of problematic keyword selfcannibalization you can choose from two options:
- Combine two landing pages into one of the two, and deleting (or noindex) the other one.
- Avoid overlap as much as possible by making sure the exact query you want to rank for on page A does not appear on page B (and vice versa).
I think it depends on the situation whether you want to go for option 1 or 2. In your case it seems pretty much okay, but to be sure you could cut down on the word ciclismo on the general shimano page.
Best of luck!

thanks sven. so do you recommend me to do any action like delete some ciclismo instances on the shimano pages?

I did a quick check on both pages:
http://www.deporvillage.com/ciclismo/zapatillas-shimano
and
http://www.deporvillage.com/shimanoBoth get an A for on-page optimization for the word: shimano. Also on the page /shimano there are 41 instances of the word ciclismo. You might want to avoid this word on the general /shimano page if you have a separate landing page for 'zapatillas ciclismo shimano'.
However, generally speaking there isn't much to worry about if you do not in fact rank with both pages for one keyword.

thanks expand online team, but i wonder why is considering it self canibalization if there are different keywords
shimano is pointing to http://www.deporvillage.com/shimano
and zapatillas ciclismo shimano (shimano cycling shoes) to http://www.deporvillage.com/ciclismo/zapatillas-shimano
there are different keywords so they might have different url's no?

Rand has said the following about it in his blog:
....Keyword self-cannibalization - the practice of heavily targeting the same keyword phrase on multiple pages of a site....
Having multiple pages for one keyword or phrase is not ideal since this means you are competing with yourself. All the backlinks, content, internal linkjuice etc. is devided over multiple pages instead of concentrating it on one page.
Ofcourse, if these pages are on position one and two in the SERP this situation is perfectly fine. However, if they hold position 11 and 15 the combined force of these two pages may be enough to rank 5th or 6th. That would generate a lot more traffic since results after postion 10 generate virtually no traffic.
I hope this helps!
Greets,
Sven Witteveen

Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization. Please Help
This has been addressed plenty of times but I cannot find an example that addresses my issue so that is why I am posting this. I am getting the following Self-Cannibalization error for my Homepage and I am trying to fix it but I just don't see it or maybe I do not understand this correctly. http://fake-diploma.com Keyword Fake Diploma Cannibalizing link"How to make a fake diploma", "How to get a fake diploma", "Making a Fake High School Diploma", "Fake Diploma Template", and "Framing your fake diploma" My understanding is that for Self-Cannibalization to occur I would have to have a link on this page pointing to another page using "Fake Diploma" as my anchor text since I want this page to rank for Fake Diploma. I do have the left sidebar which contains my most recent post and my of my titles do include Fake Diploma but I thought that since they were not an Exact Match and are actually longtail keywords that they did not matter or cause Self-Cannibalization. Am I wrong? How do I fix this.

Same keyword for almost same content
Hi all! my site deals with a concept called "motivation" in two different categories: motivation for teachers (related to kids) and motivation for parents (related to kids all well). These two categories (in different pages and in different menus) deals with the concept through different perspectives. BUT the keyword to optimize the pages is the same. Due to the structure of the web I've been given I am in this position. I can't redesign the web (I'm not allowed to do it). Any solution related to the keyword? Should I maybe optimize one page with the keyword and in this page have a link to the other not-optimzed page?Any ideas? Thanks in advanced.

Would adding noindex help?
I had completely forgotten that I have about 20 pages of content on my site that is an exact duplicate of other sites (i.e. obtained from PLR site). I really do not want to delete these pages as they do get a lot of visitors (or did before last algo updates). These visitors are not from organic search but have navigated to the pages from within my site. Question is should I a) add noindex to these pages and then ask google to remove them from index or b) try to rewrite them Many Thanks Simon

Archetecture to avoid content duplicate
Hi, I have lots of duplicate stuff and I need a better site architecture. http://www.furnacefilterscanada.com/ We are selling furnace filters. All furnace filters are sold in 50 different sizes, each sizes comes in 3 different qualities, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Total: 150 products. Right now I have created many categories and subcategories for furnace filters sizes. When the client pickup is sizes, he will end-up to the products page with 3 different options, Bronze, Silver and Gold. They can then compare the filter a select the one he wants to purchase. The problem is, it is not possible to provide different content for each filters, Gold has a description, Silver has another one and also Bronze. The only text that will change in the descriptions, is the filter size. This makes Duplicates text description. Not good when you what to index your site. The positive things to 150 different products, is the page title. example 16x25x4 furnace filters. Those exacte tem get search in Google. A new site architecture with 3 categories, Gold, Silver and Bronze & 50 variables by products (filters sizes) might not be the best options, because no filter size will be index. Can you please help me to find the best architecture in a SEO point of view? Also what about the top navigation bar menu, what is the best options in using it? Right now it is use for Legal, Contact, Policy and I fill it is a wast, those page only get less then 1% clicks. It might be more convenient to use those for categories for example, what is your recommendations in a SEO point of view? Can I create a information page in the left navigation menu and includ all the standard page, like: Policy, Legal ... If I do, will I get penalize by Google? Thank you for your help. We have puts lots of money in AdWords before, but now the next step is to come home organics. I'm using SEOmoz tools, read there new book, and I want increase traffic. I just need your help. Thank you, BigBlaze
