Help diagnosing a complex SEO issue
-
Good evening SEOMoz.
A series events, in close succession are making it somewhat difficult for me to diagnose a cause of fluctuations in traffic. Please excuse some of the stupid moves I made, but desperation got the better of me.
One of my most beloved websites was hit by Panda on January 18th. Pretty sure it was due to a CMS bug that is now fixed. The website site started to show great signs of recovery from April 19th - Panda 3.5.
I'm going to be as explicit as possible with the traffic for the days that follow. Traffic was stable previously.
April 20th +10%.
April 21st +5%.
April 22nd +5%. (half way recovered, also the first real fluctuation since the site was hit in Jan).
Due to the looming over-optimisation penalty, on the 22nd I changed the titles to unoptimise them a little. (fear is a dangerous thing at times).
April 23rd -10%.
April 24th -10%
April 25th onwards, pretty much levelled out.
The websites I've seen hit by Penguin, lost around 40% of their traffic, very steeply on 24th and 25th April.
So the drops aren't in keeping with my experience of Penguin. But they do coincide perfectly with the massive site-wide title change. I've haven't read anything definitive about a penalty for changing titles too often, but for obvious reasons, it makes sense.
The drop seems terribly soon after changing titles, but the site is very heavily indexed.
It's also worth mentioning that I did changed the titles BACK, incase it was purely the fact the titles had been slightly de-optimised, that caused the drop. I waited until May 5th. This had no positive nor negative effect.
It's a lot to take in but I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I'm feeling a little bamboozled looking at all the figures.
There was of course the above the fold update on the 19th Jan, but lets ignore that as we've only ever had a max 1 ad per page, most pages have none.

Anybody else any thoughts on this?

Sorry about that mistake, I forgot about the 10% each interval.
Have you exported your organic search results from pre-panda/penguin? I would export the organic searches and then compare them, and see how many keywords AND what keywords are no longer being indexed.
At best, you narrow down what pages are not getting as much organic search and you can try to fix the links by either optimizing the pages, maybe removing keyword stuffing, and requesting questionable links to your site(not saying you are doing any of these but just general idea of why penguin is hitting some sites).

Overall, we are now still 40% down from January Panda. We're talking hundreds of thousands of uniques a month lost. It's a big site.
The 10% increments and drops were per day, so we had a 10+5+5 increase after the April Panda update. Then I made my title change and lost the 20% that we'd just gained.
It's pretty hard to follow I realise.

Is your site in a competitive niche? The competitiveness of a niche can greatly impact the fluctuating rankings. Are you checking rankings for just the root domain or other sections of the site?
One thing that could be a factor as well is that some keywords you were ranking for pre-penguin, might not be ranking anymore post-penguin.
I have a site that was effected by penguin as well and one keyword we had that was driving 10-20% of traffic was not longer ever an organic source.
I would try my best to start building up instead of worrying about the drop if its only 10%. For the site I mentioned, we are just going to try to optimize other parts of the site and keep on building links.

WordPress Themes and SEO
I am helping out a client with updating their website.

The theme they currently have hasn't been updated in ages (I am going to guess years). Would there be a difference in updating to the most recent version of their theme and changing them to a completely different theme? Or because they update in the current theme is so large anyway, it won't make a difference in terms of SEO. The reason I ask is that they don't know their Themeforest details to log in and download the most recent version of the theme, so they would have to re-purchase it, and with the hosting, they have access to a range of themes includes in their package. Mirrors Hosting SEO
Hello, I notice that some sites do provide hosting for mirroring file downloading for cpanel, apache and other big developers. I assume that benefits of it is link building but look at this site: http://apache.mirrors.hoobly.com/ Hoobly provide mirrors for most developers but none of them are indexed by google for ex: http://apache.mirrors.hoobly.com/ So can someone explain why would be that or what is going on ? is that something hidden here ?

Domain Forwarding for SEO
Hey guys, I recently created a new website for a client who was ranking #1 for the term "jupiter obgyn" but they have now dropped down to #4. This happened because their old home page was at www. instead of just jupiterobgyn.com. When you type in the www. version, it does take you to the root domain but it's not carrying the old PA! The www. version of the page had a 22 PA and the new root domain hosted page is a 1. How can I fix it so that "link juice" carries over? Is this something i need to do in 1and1 (their web host) or within Wordpress? Thanks!!!

Domain Issue
Starting a new local travel guide site. Would like to buy a domain and have found one with decent Domain Authority and Trust, but they want $2500 for the domain which I feel is a bit steep since I will be not using any of the content and it is generating hardly any revenue now. . I would rather not start from scratch with no links and no trust. I have a few questions.... -Any suggestions on sites to look for domains or strategy for finding and offering to buy? Any guidelines on how to value domains? If I but it and change registration do I risk losing all the value? Cold I just change technical contact info? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Need help or explanation on my site!
My site has suffered greatly since the recent Google update. I have done everything as suggested. I have had all bad links removed over 2 months ago. I have lowered keyword density (not easy since the keyword is in our company name!). I have rewritten various content and bolstered our existing content. What gives? What can I do? As an example the keyword, "maysville plumber" - I rank about 40th for this keyword. The first three pages are filled with websites with literally NO content or no added value. Maysville is a town of about 1k residents - there is no competition. Before the update I was #1 for years on this particular keyword. And this is the case with 35 other cities (mostly small cities, but a few larger ones). Please help me understand or suggest what I can possibly do at this point. We have hundreds of pages of unique content on each and every page. We have zero duplicate content (I have ran tests and crawlers). We have no fishy links. I have not gotten any messages from google on Webmasters. PLEASE HELP!! I asked a similar question a little while back and fixed all of the suggestions. My site is www.akinsplumbing.net.

HTML entities and SEO
I recently came across an article on HTML entities that discussed how their appear in search results. The same article also mentioned that their use might be considered spam. Since I know nothing of them (other than what I read in the one article) are they a good or bad idea to make meta descriptions stand out from the crowd?

What are the most underrated SEO tactics?
Looking over the discussion of underrated SEO tactics at http://sphinn.com/story/178993/ , I'm curious if folks here have any favorite SEO tactics that they feel are ignored, underrated, or somehow not appreciated by the community at large. Any thoughts? Among the tactics listed in the Sphinn post: Blog commenting Analytics to identify low-hanging keyword fruit Getting your site set up properly at the server level Unique and relevant imagery Internal links Google Place page optimization Several more... Any others that should be included? I'd personally add segmenting your keyword traffic into trademark (those that mention your brand name) versus non-trademark segments for more thorough analysis.
