Importance of keyword in the content to rank well
-
Well, I am very beginner seo.
our website is www.theprinterdepo.com and our main keyword for the moment is refurbished printers, but there might be hundreds of more keywords.
I was analyzing the SERPs and found that for our keyword, the first 2 websites that come up have very different content
1.http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=PRN
They rank first, but I dont see a lot of text with the keyword in their text or links
2. http://www.valstarprinters.com/
They mention the keywords lots of times in the text, probably they are doing keyword stuffing?
So this makes me thing, how the 1st one ranked there? just by link builiding?

I know what a 301 its, but I dont understand how you found that?
Just a little background information
we had a website called www.theprinterdepot.net and we wanted to move to .com
when we moved we put a 301 redirect in the www.theprinterdepot.net to the .com
I did that in the php.ini, its that the 301 you are talking about? should I remove it and replace the welcome page with a we have moved to or something?

Just to give you a little perspective:
You have 103 Root Domains pointing at you. Geeks has 4300.
Now, they aren't doing their on page perfectly, but I'm going to guess that they haven't really needed to. They are trying to rank for a few different search phrases on the page you've provided, so in a sense they are diluting their strength. However, they are strong enough, at this point, where it doesn't matter.
As you will always hear, though, I'd suggest working on your on-page ranking factors, and trying to acquire high quality links. I ran a quick check on your site, and you are internally pointing at 301's (such as http://www.theprinterdepo.com/plotters-drawing.html). This will cause you to leak a little link value. I found about a dozen in a couple minutes.

I tend to find ranking goes more or less like this (this is oversimplified for the sake of argument)
- Relevance (i.e. site content)
- Site importance (i.e. links)
- Other factors (trust, penalties, alignment of the planets, etc)
So you have to look at the big picture first. Geeks.com is a large and popular site (it's even a Google trusted site!) and it's relevant to the search (because they do sell refurbished printers). I would bet they have lots and lots of backlinks in general.
The second site has keyword overkill, that's for sure. It's not unfair to call that keyword stuffing. But they also have you pretty beat on links. Using the comparison feature of Open Site Explorer, Valstar has twice as many links as you do. Worse, half your links are nofollow (pass no rank). Valstar has a Mozrank of 53 and your site has a 40.

Question About Thin Content
Hello, We have an encyclopedia type page on our e-commerce site. Basically, it's a page with a list of terms related to our niche, product definitions, slang terms, etc. The terms on the encyclopedia page are each linked to their own page that contains the term and a very short definition (about 1-2 sentences). The purpose of these is to link them on product pages if a product has a feature or function that may be new to our customers. We have about 82 of these pages. Are these pages more likely to help us because they're providing information to visitors, or are they likely to hurt us because of the very small amount of content on each page? Thanks for the help!

Duplicate Content Mystery
Hi Moz community! I have an ongoing duplicate mystery going on here and I'm hoping someone here can answer my question. We have an Ecommerce site that has a variety of product pages and category pages. There are Rel canonicals in place, along with parameters in GWT, and there are also URL rewrites. Here are some scenarios, maybe you can give insight as to what’s exactly going on and how to fix it. All the duplicates look to be coming from category pages specifically. For example:
Technical SEO | | Ecom-Team-Access
This link re-writes: http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves.html?cat=407&color=152&price=20- To: http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves.html The rel canonical tag looks like this: http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves.html" /> The CONTENT is different, but the URLs are the same. It thinks that the product category view is the same as the all products view, even though there is a canonical in there telling it which one is the original. Some of them don’t have anything to do with each other. Take a look: Link identified as duplicate: http://www.incipio.com/cases/smartphone-cases/htc-smartphone-cases/htc-windows-phone-8x-cases.html?color=27&price=20- Link this is a duplicate of: http://www.incipio.com/cases/macbook-cases/macbook-pro-13in-cases.html Any idea as to what could be happening here?0 -
Duplicate content question...
I have a high duplicate content issue on my website. However, I'm not sure how to handle or fix this issue. I have 2 different URLs landing to the same page content. http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/vegan/ and http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/raw-food/ .In this situation, I cannot redirect one URL to the other since in the future I will probably be adding additional posts to either the "vegan" tag or the "raw food tag". What is the solution in this case? Thank you

Rank tracker and Rankings report differs
Hi all Is this normal? I have set up a campaign for a site. Tracking a variety of keywords. For one of them, which is a quite important keyword I've been working on I've moved down one step in my rankings report. This is first of all weird because my on page optimization went from grade c to a, and even weirder beacuse if I run Rank Tracker tool on the keyword and the URL I see that I've moved up 6 steps, to 15 in Google. Kinda makes it hard to grasp if I'm on the right path or not! (I've checked and they are both results on google.dk, same URL and same keyword - exact)

Does this content get indexed?
A lot of content on this site is displayed in pop up pages. Eg. Visit the Title page http://www.landgate.wa.gov.au/corporate.nsf/web/Certificate+of+Title To access the sample report or fee details, the info is shown in a pop up page with a strange url. Example: http://www.landgate.wa.gov.au/corporate.nsf/web/Certificate+of+Title+-+Fee+Details I can't see any of these pages being indexed in Google or other search engines when I do a site search: http://www.landgate.wa.gov.au/corporate.nsf/web/Certificate+of+Title+-+Fee+Details Is there a way to get this content indexed besides telling the client to restructure this content?

Beating a keyword Domain
Has anyone here managed to beat a keyword/exact match domain to top spot? I am currently second and wondering if it is worth the time and effort to knock it off the top spot. How hard is it to get these very annoyingly favoured domains off 1st? Any help and advice much appreciated.

Keyword Canabalisation and my solution
Hi. According to one guy, in this thread: http://www.seomoz.org/q/good-seo-titles, the Meta Title, H1 Tag Title on the product page, and the category listing pages should be different to avoid keyword canabilisation. One problem I noticed in my website after reading about this topic, is that all my printers have the keyword sentence :"refurbished printer", yes 99% of the products are refurbished but in that way according to the answer in the above post I am competing against self, too many pages (1000) with the same keywords on it. So I decided to make some changes and I I would like to know the opinion of the experts here, I did this only for one product, then I would of course need to this for lots of products. 1. I created a different meta title. check here please http://www.theprinterdepo.com/hp-color-laserjet-cp2025n-printer-new 2. In the product page itself, I removed the condition from the name of the product, instead I put the template, NAME - MODEL -CONDITION. 3. In the category listing page I havent made any change yet, it still shows the product name only http://www.theprinterdepo.com/new-printers/color-laser-new-printers Check 1st row, 4th column. Is this a good approach?
