Why is Business.com a valuable link when they are all nofollow?
-
Earlier today, I received a $50 off coupon for a Business.com listing. Back when I was really learning about directories, lots of people recommended getting one of these listings because editors actually review it to make sure the website linked is of good quality. Even the SEOmoz Directory Guide regards it as a good link.
Now, it seems like every outbound link from Business.com has a 'nofollow' tag right when they link to the target website. Furthermore, the actual business listing doesn't even link to the website! Let me take, for example, web design companies:
http://www.business.com/internet/web-design/
This directory has tons of 'nofollow' links. On top of that, if you take any of the companies listed and do a search for their business page, the business page doesn't even have a link to their website! That doesn't exactly seem like it's worth $300 a year...
Any chance there is something I'm missing here? I'm not fully understanding this, it seems.

As you already know Yahoo directory, business.com and DMOZ are sites that require a review process and in the first two a large financial investment that prevents spammers from taking advantage of low hanging fruit. They have a do follow attribute when it's part of the directory not the ads. Google trusts these sites.

Hi Echolls,
You probably were looking at the sponsors. Those are paid links which are deemed as nofollow. If you scroll down to the directory listings you'll see the follow links with those are people who paid to be in the directory.
Example:
<div class="g3-dl-block">
<a href="http://www.digitalbrands.com" target="_blank">Digital Brands Inc.a><p> Web development firm that creates online and mobile brands in competitive, high-volume verticals. p><a class="g3-dl-prettylink" href="http://www.digitalbrands.com" target="_blank"> http://www.digitalbrands.coma>div>
As far as the value, that comes down to industry. In our industry the major directory is ThomasNet however you only see them in SERP's occasionally on really low traffic keywords, but their site is highly linked, very authoritive and used throughout our industry. So the value of the link is not just SEO but also leads. Picking up 1 job from them can pay for itself. Make sure you not only evaluate the SEO value but the marketing value of each potential listing.
Hope that makes sense.

Which is more valuable?
When building links, what would you say is more valuable in boosting your google rankings when you, for example, are currently on pages 2 and 3 for keywords, have a DA of 18, and have a few relevant links from niche directories etc...? 1 irrelevant linking root domain with a DA of 80 **or **8 relevant linking root domains with a DA of 10 each. There is no right answer (I think :-)), but I would like to see how different people view relevancy, and quantity vs. quality. Also, would you answer differently for a site that is well established (DA= 30-40) with a number of both relevant, irrelevant, high DA, and low DA linking domains. Discuss please 🙂

Inbound Links not showing. Links are not no follow
Over the past several months I have definitely received inbound links to my website ( none of which are no follow). I have HubSpot as well s Moz and none of the links are showing. My competitors with the same link sources are showing though. I am completely dumbfounded. Why are my inbound links not showing and how much time does it take for them to show if they show at all? Thank you!

Is there an extra SEO benefit for linking to pages that link to you?
Currently working on a link-building strategy and have gotten a few mentions. Just curious if there is any SEO benefits of linking back to the pages my site was mentioned and linked on? Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!

So my questions is; Does it really matter if the link is relvant to property or real estate if I have got ranking increases? Or will it later harm my site?? Thanks Gareth

The website in question was hacked four years ago and there was porn on the servers. It was used as a peer to peer torrent streamer. The images were deleted. We have just found inappropriate inward bound links (with great link juice!!) - how can we remove these links - or should we? any advice would be appreciated thanks

New ways to get links (excluding on site link bait)?
Fellow SEOs, I’m looking for a new way to reach out to bloggers and site owners for links. There are quite a few link bait techniques to lure bloggers thanks to = amazing content, infographics,...but there are not so many articles on ways to contact bloggers/webmasters and ask for links... We all know that contacting site owners directly and politely asking then to place a link on their home page is as useful as a comb in Bruce willis’s hand. Link exchange is as dead as the Dodo and business partner links are usefull and easier to get but opportunities are often limited. I have been organizing contests for bloggers recently and it has been quite successful up to now, but I always like to have a spare trick up my sleeve. So if any of you have a decent method to reach out to bloggers/webmaster and get decent links please let me know, I will be forever thankful ; ) Cheers
