Keeping Roger Happy - The Dynamic Dilema!
-
Roger (the SEOMoz robot) is reporting 1000’s of duplicate pages, duplicate titles and overly dynamic URL’s. These are being caused by our dynamic forum/shopping/testimonial pages.
I appreciate Roger’s efforts and for making me aware of the situation, but should I be worrying about this too much? I believe that this shouldn’t affect rankings or SEO performance.. but then again I want to make Roger happy and see ‘0’ next to all errors and warnings! J
Many thanks in advance!
Lee

Many thanks Pete, will see what we can do and take action. Appreciate the advice

I'm seeing a lot of duplicates in your forum pages - I think the issue is that any attempts to click into the forum go to the login page, but the URL stays the same. You may want to block those from crawlers somehow (META NOINDEX, for example), since Google can't log into member areas.
They don't seem to be currently in the Google index, but there is potential to dilute your site's ranking ability and for Google to think that your content is "thin". I do think it's a problem you should address.
-
Appreciate that Alsvik, thought as much.
Still not sure whether I should be worrying about it too much though! Anyone else got any input?
-
Rel=canonical for duplicate entries to the same pages. You could, if possible on your server, add no follow, noindex to all but one active URL for the same page - or use redirects ...
-
I'll buy you a beer when you do Alsvik! How are you fixing the problem if you don't mind me asking?
-
I worry too. And therefore I fix pages, sorted by page authority. I calculate on reaching 0 some day in 2017 ... Yes, you should fix these, but you need to prioritise your errors and warnings. Since google is my biggest concern, I start by fixing the ones GWT show me - and then I focus on Mozbot errors and warnings ....

Redirect closed shop to main shop, or keep the domain and content alive and use it for link building?
Hello, We used to have two shops selling our products, a small shop with a small selection of only our best quality products (domain smallshop.com), and a big shop with everything (bigshop.com). It used to make sense (without going into full detail), but it's not relevant anymore, and so we decided to stop maintaining the small shop, because it was time consuming and not worth it. There is some really good links pointing to smallshop.com, and the content is original (the product descriptions are different between both shops). So far, we just switch the "add to cart" button on the small shop into a link to the same product on the big shop, and did links from the small shop to the big shop also on categories pages. So the question is: in your opinion, is it better to do that, keep the small shop and content alive and build links to our big shop, or do 301 redirections and shut down completely the small shop ? Thanks for your opinion!

Keeping E Commerce Product Content Fresh
Hi, Some months ago we created unique content for each of our product descriptions - basically, we removed manufacturers description and made our own unique content. But our content is now, I feel, stale but I'm trying to work out how we can produce fresh content for the product pages and how much is needed for Google to notice the changes? My question is: What does google class as freshness? Would a new photo count? I've always thought that it has to be mainly text content but we do not get that many reviews as our products are not mainstream and it's a small market so are we to create extra bits of text content in the descriptions, and how much?

Keep Pages with Old Dates?
We have a tourism related site. We list annual events. Right now the URL extension includes the year. I assume it is better to keep the same page and update the dates, thereby keeping any links, ranking trust and authority we built. Is that the best strategy by updating the event info with the new dates? I would assume with a new page for the new year we would be starting over again and would have too much similar content and link diffusion. And in the future are we better off not including the year in the URL extension?

301 Redirecting from Static to Dynamic URLs. I think we messed up
I'm looking for some guidance on an issue I believe we created for ourselves and if we undo what we did. We recently added attributed search to our sites. This of course created a bunch of dynamically generated URLS. For various reasons, it was decided to take some of our existing static URLs and 301 redirect them to their dyanamic counterpart. Ex .../Empire-Paintball-Masks-0Y.aspx now redirects to .../Paintball-Masks-And-Goggles-0Y.aspx?Manufacturer=Empire Many of these stat URLS had top 3 rankings for their associated keywords. Now, we don't rank for anything. I realize that 301 redirecting is the way to go...if you NEED to. My guess is our drop in keyword ranking is directly tied to what we did. I'm looking for an solid argument to be made to my boss as to why we should not have done this and that it, more than likely has resulted in dropped keyword rankings and organic traffic. I welcome any input. Also, if we decided to revert back (remove all 301 redirects and de-index all dynamic URLS), what is the likely hood we can recapture some of this lost organic traffic? Can I disallow indexing in a robot.txt file to remove, say anything with a '?' in the URL? Would the above URL example (which was ranking in the top 3 in SERPs), have a good chance of finding its way back? thanks

Primary Navigation: Keep All Links Or Keep Top Level
Our eCommerce site www.towelsrus.co.uk employees a primary navigation system which we can enable to as many categories or not as we link. If all categories are enabled it adds roughly another 50 to 60 followed links per page giving all pages roughly 150 followed links (Google suggests no more than 100 per page). If I enable just top level navigation then this reduces them all considerably. Personally from the customer experience I think its better for them all to be visible, however from an SEO perspective and link juice perhaps not. Thought and opinions much appreciated here. Thanks Craig

Dynamically creating unique page titles on enterprise site
Hi, I want to dynamically create unique page titles (possible meta descriptions too) on a 10k page site. Many of the page titles are either duplicates or are missing. I heard about the option of grabbing the page titles from a database or possibly using the h1 as the page title. solmelia.com (the website consist of mostly static pages) Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Best Regards,

Why does google keep shortening my title?
IRS Problems, Tax Problems <cite>www.taxproblem.org/</cite> We are a Local Houston CPA Firm in Harris County Texas, dedicated to helping taxpayers resolve their tax problems. We mean, “actually resolve their IRS ... Checking the source code doesn't reveal any reason I can see why they would do that. It happens most often, if not all the time, and only Google results So if anyone would check the source code of my main page and can see why and what needs to be done, I can fix it. Thanks
