Page Title
-
My website was hacked last November and then again last week. Prior to the hacking we were at number one in Google.co.uk for our main search term "nile cruises' for years.
After last November's hacking we dropped to about position 4 and after last week we are at position 7.
Ima rebuilding the lost data and I am having to create new Title and Description meta data for each of the indexed pages.
I am taking the opportunity to try and ensure my titles and descriptions are good and the correct length, etc but wondered about the best title format.
I set our home page title over the weekend as:
Nile Cruise | Leading ABTA & ATOL Bonded UK Nile Cruise Specialist
I was going to try and cover 3 keyphrases in the title like this:
Nile Cruise | Nile Cruises | Nile Cruise Bargains
But I thought that might look a bit spammy because the 3 phrases are very similar.
I wondered what anyone else might suggest?
Thanks,
Colin

I agree Nathan. Thanks.
I'm going to take Marcus's and your advice with the title.
Cheers,
Colin

Thanks Marcus. I'm hoping that that's the case.
The annoying thing si that "information-wise" we are a much better site. We have Blog posts and information going back to 2007 and much more content but that site still ranks above us at the moment.
However I intend to fight the good fight as you say. I think membership of SEOMoz is going to be a great help especially when you can call upon the kindness of people like yourself to share their knowledge.
Thanks,
Colin

HI Colin,
I agree with Marcus's response below. Getting all the keywords in the title tags and not sounding spammy can be tough, especially when dealing with the home page since that page can sometimes be the catch all page.
From what I have been told it does not benefit you to repeat the same word more than once like you do in this example.............Nile Cruise | Nile Cruises | Nile Cruise Bargains. By repeating Nile 3 times you are missing out on being able to include other keywords.
His example is a great example - Nile Cruises & Cruise Bargains - UK ABTA & ATOL Cruise Specialist
It includes a different variation of each (singular or plural)

Hey, I would question the quality of that competitors links if they suddenly got 6000 and currently opensiteexplorer and such don't really account for quality so just keep fighting the good fight and try to create a better and more informative site than your competitor.

Hi Marcus,
Thanks for that advice and your suggestions. Hopefully (in some way) the drop might be a result of the Google changes and perhaps with hard SEO work I can regain our lost position.
One of our competitors seemed to appear from nowhere last November with about 6,000+ links which dwarfs our back link total. So I think it will be hard to overtake them very quickly but perhaps on-page and content improvements will help us compete.
We do have a WP blog on the site but the main site is built on Cold Fusion.

Hey Colin, I much prefer a good branded or descriptive title so this:
Nile Cruise | Leading ABTA & ATOL Bonded UK Nile Cruise Specialist
Is way better than this: Nile Cruise | Nile Cruises | Nile Cruise Bargains
If you wanted to cover those phrases or words you could always try to work them in to the title in a more natural way say something like.
Nile Cruises & Cruise Bargains - UK ABTA & ATOL Cruise Specialist
That is a super quick example but it works in many more of the words and phrases in a non spammy way. Sure you could do better!
Also, with all the changes in search of late (penguin, panda etc) then don't assume the hack was the loss of your rankings, it could be the natural moving target nature of search or one of many other causes. By the way, what are you using that is getting hacked so often? WordPress? There are options to easily toughen it up and just going that little step extra is usually enough to put off most 'hackers'.
Hope this helps
Marcus

Combining products - edit existing product page or 301 redirect to new page?
We want to combine existing products - e.g. 'hand lotion' and 'body lotion' will become 'hand & body lotion'. As such, we'll need to combine the two product pages into one. What would be the best route to take in terms of SEO to do this? My initial reaction is to create a new product page and then 301 or 302 redirect the old products to the new product page depending on if the change is permanent or temporary. Would you agree? Or am I missing something?

Sub-pages have no pa
I took over a website a few months ago which is not performing well at all for chosen keywords. When I first inspected it, I found a rel canonical tag pointing to the homepage on every page. This was quickly deleted and all the pages were fetched in webmaster tools. 3 months later and the website is still performing badly. When I use the mozbar, it shows that all of the sub-pages have a pa of 1. It is only a small site and all of the pages are linked to on the navbar in a simple way. The links are not made using javascript and all the pages are on the sitemap which is submitted to wmt. I have checked that all of the changes that have been made have been indexed as well. Could it be possible that google still sees the canonical tag even though its not there? I can't think of any other reason why the pages have no pa or why it is so far behind the competitors despite having better content and links. Also, the site is appropriate for adults, but I found (among the mess left for me) a meta ratings tag set to "general". This has now been deleted, could it negatively affect rankings?

Prices in title tag
At our ecommerce site adwords ads generally perform a lot better when the product price is included in the ad title. Does anyone here have any experience and data on CTR with including product prices in title tags of product / category pages?

What is the threshold for a page title to be considered duplicate?
We're trying to find out what percentage of words in a page title need to be the same for it to be considered duplicate? We have search results pages for each country on our site, so the only difference in the page title is the country name and they are all being flagged as duplicate, even though they are not 100% duplicate.

Home Page
We are re-design our home page, one are of the current home page has a drop down window called "popular products" . We wrote short articles for our keywords and have them linked to product page. In the past, it has helped us rank. However, with new Google rules, our feeling is that such practice is no good. So, we lean towards to remove it. Still, we'd like to hear some opinions and ask some questions too: www.butterflycraze.com is it clear to you that this is not good in Google's eyes? how do I determine if these links serving any SEO purpose now after Panda? depend on the answer to 2), what should we do about these pages? shall be re-direct or shall we remove them from Google index?

My website is saying I have duplicate page content and page title. How do I fix it?
Hi, I created a website on webstarts.com. After I launched it then ran a scan through SEO it says I have duplicate page content and page title. The 2 pages it is reading are technically the same page. www.mobilemowermedicsinc.com and www.mobilemowermedicsinc.com/index . I am unsure how to get rid of on of these as it keeps saying this is an error in the SEO scan. Could someone please advise me of what to do from here. Thanks!

Too many on page links
Our home page (and 1400 of our other pages) have well over 100 links, going beyond the recommend amount. Our competitors have less on page links (to other pages on their site) and way more link popularity so we are trying to figure out the best solution for this without hurting our sites conversions and usbaility.
