Using exact keyword domains for local SEO
-
The website is for the attorney that serves several nearby cities. The main page is optimized for the biggest central city. I have several options how to go after the smaller surrounding cities:
1. Create optimized pages inside the main domain
2. Get more or less exact keyword domains for each city e.g. for the city ABC get yourABClawyer.com
and then
a) use 1 page websites that use the same template as main website and link all the menu items to the main website
b)use 1 page website with a link "for more information go to our main website"
c) point exact keyword domains to the optimized pages within the main domain.
Which option would be the best in terms of SEO and user experience?
Would people freak out if they click on the menu item and go to a different domain website even though it uses the same template (option 2a)
Would I get more bounces with option 2b in your opinion?
Would option 2c have any positive SEO effect?
Should I not even bother with exact keyword domain and go with option 1?

Robert,
Thank you very much. I appreciate the thorough audit. Many great points that make a lot of sense especially since I joined and started reading SEOmoz materials.

SirMax,
First the answer is, based on the question you are asking: 1. and totally forget 2. (Developing micro sites/ landing pages) please.
So that you will know that I know that is correct, we handle attorney sites (quite a few - but we are not a vertical marketing firm like a findlaw, etc.). By going to the trouble of creating multiple micro sites you will dilute your efforts, content, and links and since you are already in Places - needs some help - there is no other place page you can create for those other cities/areas.
So, resist the urge to name every surrounding city, etc. It won't help you. Optimize for the three in your title tag for the home page (get rid of the word 'and' in both places and the word area at the end). On the title tag, between lawyer and S___ get rid of the dash and put 'a pipe' like this | (usually on the forward slash key). Take out all the keywords in your cms you don't need them and the engines don't use them.
On your H1 use an identifier like city with the key word you are stressing like Chapter 7 this city or chapter 7 bankruptcy this city, (If you are going to have a bankruptcy lawyer or bk atty page, then on chapter 7 do not put chapter 7 bankruptcy attorney 5 times. You do not need the attorney kw there. really.
On your H2 (you can have multiple H2's) you can have Bankruptcy Attorney in ZZZZ, Bankruptcy attorney in YYYY if you must
Now, if you want something that will help get clients stop stuffing the meta description with keywords as the meta description is not used for ranking. It is a sales tool for you. So, for bankruptcy (a suggestion):
Stop being afraid and feeling bad about your situation, call me today at 111111111. I am an experienced bankruptcy attorney and I understand how you feel. (Not sure on length of this one, but it is close to good)
If you are using chapter 7 your city, make the meta desc. about chapter 7:
If you are in the ____ area and need answers about chapter 7 bankruptcy, I am here to help. 9(((((9999. I understand it can be tough and I am experienced at protecting my clients. (again, keep it around 150 to 160 characters).
Lastly, on your places page you need to work on Categories as yours are not showing. Do not use any local identifiers. Just categories. For bankruptcy, the default is going to first be Bankruptcy Attorney. You can use Lawyer as well. Then I would type in three to four of my own: Chapter 7 bankruptcy attorney, chapter 13 bankruptcy attorney, etc.
Again, don't stuff it and do not use locations/city names.
This will help you 20x more than what you had. Give it a try.
Best,
PS On keyword research in the area you are in, attorney is used more than lawyer. You can interchange but don't try to have an attorney page and a lawyer page.

Is Building a Local Directory of Businesses on a Subdomain Good SEO?
Hello Fellow Moz'ers: I own a small digital shop in a major US city. We had a marketing idea which I'd like some input on the soundness of. We are creating a professional services directory of 'digital professional services providers' in our hometown. The directory's membership will only be open to firms located within our city limits. The directory will be curated and maintained, ongoing, by us. Our motivation is 75% selfish and 25% benevolent. The idea is that, by building the directory on our subdomain, we hopefully will collect links, which ultimately will enhance search visibility. But I'm concerned about the devaluation directories have incurred in recent years and I've even seen advice given to the effect that listings in some directories might be harmful to a site's link profile. It is not our intention to harm those who might list in our directory. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Using pictures from another domain
We are building several sites for several clients which will be using images from the manufacturer. Our dev team wants to insert the manufacturer's url for the images, instead of actually downloading the image and hosting on our server. There are thousands of images, so downloading images to our server will be time consuming, so we are looking for a shortcut.... however I'm concerned this will cause other issues. Is using manufactueresdomain.com/12345.jpg going to cause SEO issues? will this generate Google penalties? Since we are not able to control the image file name, we cannot optimize it. We will add Alt text and Title tag for each image, but the file name is random characters. How important is the file name for SEO?

Is there any SEO advantage to sharing links on twitter using google's url shortener goo.gl/
Hi is there any advantage to using <cite class="vurls">goo.gl/</cite> to shorten a URL for Twitter instead of other ones? I had a thought that <cite class="vurls">goo.gl/</cite> might allow google to track click throughs and hence judge popularity.

Real Estate Local SEO
My site hovers on page 2 of google for the key search phrase. I have a blog that gets updated often, I have genuine links coming in, I promote on all social media channels, I do email campaigns, I have a site map, I have my local address on what I believe are the most important sites like Yelp, Manta, Google Local etc. All this and my site is still on page 2 while other sites with less of everything are on page 1. What is missing?

City or country name get the exact domain name devauation ?
Will using a city or country name be devalued with the exact domain name update. I want to make a new website about my favourite vacation spot. I was thinking www.specificislandactivities.com or www.bestincityname.com The site will focus on all the best things to do in that vacation spot, best dining, beaches, watersports ect. I will be writing all the content based on my experience of travelling there for over 20 years... If the site is going to be all about things to do in that city or island, how else could i name the site. www.islandtravelactivities.com Wouldn't that be using the keywords island + travel + activities in the domain ? I am so confused right now, what would be devalued in the exact domain match and what would not. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Keyword-Rich Domains - Redirect?
Hi, Mozzers- I have a client that has a bunch of pretty nice keyword-rich domain names. Their traffic and rankings are good. They provide legal services in the Chicago area. I have lots of good content that I could use to start a blog using a domain like keyword,keyword-blog.com. Good idea? Currently I have a resources area on their website but feel like this area could be getting a little bloated and some news-related stuff isn't really appropriate. 2 Questions: Should I use one of the decent domains for a blog and build up the rankings, traffic, and link to the main site? Or is this lots of work for little payout? Both sites would be hosted in the cloud. Some of the domain names are related to their name, others are keyword or geo-targeted. Would it be wise to setup 301 redirects going to their website? Pros/cons? If you need additional info, please PM me for details. Thank you, friends! LHC
