Is Building a Local Directory of Businesses on a Subdomain Good SEO?
-
Hello Fellow Moz'ers:
I own a small digital shop in a major US city. We had a marketing idea which I'd like some input on the soundness of. We are creating a professional services directory of 'digital professional services providers' in our hometown. The directory's membership will only be open to firms located within our city limits. The directory will be curated and maintained, ongoing, by us.
Our motivation is 75% selfish and 25% benevolent. The idea is that, by building the directory on our subdomain, we hopefully will collect links, which ultimately will enhance search visibility. But I'm concerned about the devaluation directories have incurred in recent years and I've even seen advice given to the effect that listings in some directories might be harmful to a site's link profile. It is not our intention to harm those who might list in our directory.
Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Hi David!
Interesting topic! I'd like to show you something here on Moz that might help hash this out bit more. This our our recommended companies list:
https://moz.com/rand/recommended-list-seo-consultants/
This section of our site (which resides on the main domain, not a subdomain) helps people find various types of marketers they need for different services. I don't believe it has earned a ton of links; it's just a pretty straightforward resource for the marketing community that many companies feel proud to be included on. So, that's one approach - if you feel your customers would benefit from knowing of other digital service providers you trust in your city, then build the resource on your own website for the sake of usefulness, and maybe you'll earn a few links to it. Better, maybe some networking opportunities would arise for you for real-world work with related agencies in your city.
The alternative I see would be to start a completely separate business - a directory - on its own domain. Depending on the size of your city and the number of companies offering these types of services in that city, management could be a minor effort or become a full time job. I've never build a directory, but I did curate one back in the good 'ol days once and it was a big hassle, so my view of this is a bit biased, based on that experience. That was back when you could plonk a bunch of Adsense on something like a directory and earn a bit of money. The challenge today would be how your business would directly benefit from undertaking this second path of running a free-standing directory.
I'm no authority when it comes to directories. Yes, many have been devalued over the years, but local ones can still be useful in markets that aren't too saturated. The question mark for me in this scenario would be whether you would see some form of ROI for the effort.
Hope these thoughts are helpful!

Thanks for the answer, Billy. Since we've already built it, I'll launch it on another domain. The intentions are all above board.

I think you can do better things before, like try to find opportunities on existing local directories, town halls, local events...
If your shop was in a small city it could be a good idea, but in big one ...

I would say--and many may disagree with me--that if you are building a directory to honestly help users than that is great. However, to do so on a subdomain of your company's website is very likely going to seem fishy. I wouldn't do that, personally.

Video Accessibility and SEO
How do you implement video meta data, closed captioning and transcripts to ensure both search engines and screen readers can crawl/read? For example, in a mostly text-based video with a simple audio track hosted one brightcove and embedded into our site, we want to make sure 1) google can crawl the text on the video and 2) a vision-impaired viewer would be able to use a screen reader to hear the text on the video.

SEO Menu Question
I have a question regarding to the SEO benefits of different types of menus. Recently, I have noticed an increasing number of websites with the sort of menu like at www.sportsdirect.com, where there is only one main dropdown and then everything is a sub-menu of the sub-menus if that makes sense. Is this approach more, less or equal beneficial to what you see at http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ where there are multiple initial dropdown menus? Appreciate the feedback.

What is a good, structured link building campaign?
I feel like I've tried everything up to this point. I also survived all of the recent Google updates, including the recent EMD update (my site is an EMD). Also I am in the financial sector. I blog every day, I've made some great infographics. I have a very nice website (much better than the competition's), I've done my on-page SEO. I've done the basic link building too. I've hit good business directories, good blog directories (like Technorati), and infographic directories. I've done a bit of comment linkbuilding but I don't see that being very fruitful. I also have a large twitter following + a twitter tribe that shares all of my blog posts. I can't say I've managed to build any sort of community however. My traffic has grown from 0 to anywhere from 80 to 160 visitors every day in just 3 months, and I am happy with that progress but it seems like I have plateaued. Sure I will continue creating content, but what can I do about link building? That's where the results are probably going to come from. I've read all the articles about it, took advice from LinkBuildingSchool.com... but at this point, I'm not sure how to continue. I dont want to continue going after blog comment links, I want quality. Any advice?

Subdomains
HI there We have the following situation: www.client.com/home at /home we will have a iframe calling a subdomain data.client.com . We need to use this structure because the server structure our client have. Is there any way i can index just www.client.com/home instead the subdomain, but include the data from the iframe to be indexed ? saying that because if google shows up the subdomain page on the search results, it will not bring anything as we need /home to the iframe/subdomain to work. So, google should just index /home and the data from the subdomain, but not the subdomain itself. Does it make sense? If not, any recommendation how it should be setup? Appreciate any help.

Predictive SEO
Hello all, I am trying to perform a predictive competitive SEO analysis to estimate what I will need to do to surpass my competitors. I am unsure of how to do this and would like some advice or link to an article. What I am trying to do is predict where I can rank in three months, six months and one year as well as what I need to do compared to my competitors. Specifically also to estimate how many links I would need to acquire to both my page as well as domain. I have already pulled my competitors domain links, page links, and age. Adam

Duplicate Content On A Subdomain
Hi, We have a client who is currently close to completing a site specifically aimed at the UK market (they're doing this in-house so we've had no say in how it will work). The site will almost be a duplicate (in terms of content, targeted keywords etc.) of a section of the main site (that sits on the root domain) - the main site is targeted toward the US. The only difference will be certain spellings and currency type. If this new UK site were to sit on a sub domain of the main site, which is a .com, will this cause duplicate content issues? I know that there wouldn't be an issue if the new site were to be on a separate .co.uk domain (according to Matt Cutts), but it looks like the client wants it to be on a sub domain. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you think video syndication is a good link building tactic?
I am creating a process & strategy for publishing videos and would like some feedback on if it is worth syndicating the videos on multiple third party sites either manually or via TubeMogul. Currently the plan is to put the video on our main site, create a video sitemap, submit to webmaster tools so that hopefully the videos on our site show up in the SERPs. Then wait a week and syndicate on third party sites such as youtube, vimeo, viddler, etc. Are there any negative side affects? My thinking is that some people may only see the video if it is on youtube and the other niche sites because they may search those sites for videos rather than Google/Bing. Your thoughts?
