Canonical issue
-
Hi,
Very new to seomoz but very impressed. First report has shown me that I have duplicate pages. Some seem to be duplicate titles and some were duplicates of pages i found on the server.
however the main problem is it seems to be picking up pages with www and without it which I have a vague idea is a canonical issue.
so it throws up pages like this:
http://web-writer-articles.co.uk
and http://www.web-writer-articles.co.uk
I want it just to pick up pages with www
Firstly should it be picking up both and if not how can I make amendments so that it is only picking up pages which include www ?
thank you for your help,

Yes, now it should work. If not, write to me and I can help you

In my htaccess file at the moment I have:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.cgi index.php
Do i just add what you have suggested so it looks like this:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.cgi index.php
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^web-writer-articles.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.web-writer-articles.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]
thanks

Than you will need to make a 301 redirection to solve the problem. You will need to edit your .htaccess file. You will find it at you public_html fold. If it doesnt exist, create one.
Inside this file you in write the follow:
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^web-writer-articles.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.web-writer-articles.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]
Problem solved and google will not more complain.

Need Suggestion for Canonical Page
Hello, I am bit confused about whether to use a Canonical URL on a page or not? Actually, the project I am working on is having two pages with most similar content. The only difference between them is that only 1 paragraph of 50-60 words is different. I am not sure, whether to put a canonical URL on the another version of the page. [Note: Sorry, can't put the site URL due to some restrictions.]

How to use canonical with mobile site to main site
I am pretty sure that the mobile version of the main site needs to be the same canonical link from what I understand. I am trying to find good docuementation that supports this. Even better if its from Google or Matt Cutts. I have a main domain like http://www.mydomain.com the mobile version of this is http://www.mydomain.com/m/ Should my canonical be rel="canonical" href="http://www.mydomain.com"/> for both these pages?

Canonical Help?
This canonical thing is brand new to me and I'm trying to wrap my mind around it. Here is my situation: I use Wordpress. I am showing duplicate content with the following url's http://crosstrainingandfitness.com/online-workout-blog/ http://crosstrainingandfitness.com/online-workout-blog/page/2/ Would setting a canonical link solve this? If so, what do I put in the Canonical box for this category (online workout blog). I use Yoast's Wordpress SEO plugin. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Help with Appropriate Use of Rel Canonical
Whenever i enable Canonical URL through the 3DCart Control panel I get this Critical Factor error when running the on page report card: Appropriate Use of Rel Canonical Moderate fix <dl> <dt>Canonical URL</dt> <dd>"http://rcnitroshop.com/Nitro-Monster-Truck"</dd> <dt>Explanation</dt> <dd>If the canonical tag is pointing to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. Make sure you're targeting the right page (if this isn't it, you can reset the target above) and then change the canonical tag to reference that URL.</dd> <dt>Recommendation</dt> <dd>We check to make sure that IF you use canonical URL tags, it points to the right page. If the canonical tag points to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. If you've not made this page the rel=canonical target, change the reference to this URL. NOTE: For pages not employing canonical URL tags, this factor does not apply.</dd> </dl> Now if I disable Canonical URL then run the on page report card again the critical error goes away but I get this Optional Factor error instead: Canonical URL Tag Usage Moderate fix <dl> <dt>Number of Canonical tags</dt> <dd>0</dd> <dt>Explanation</dt> <dd>Although the canonical URL tag is generally thought of as a way to solve duplicate content problems, it can be extremely wise to use it on every (unique) page of a site to help prevent any query strings, session IDs, scraped versions, licensing deals or future developments to potentially create a secondary version and pull link juice or other metrics away from the original. We believe the canonical URL tag is a best practice to help prevent future problems, even if nothing is specifically duplicate/problematic today.</dd> <dt>Recommendation</dt> <dd>Add a canonical URL tag referencing this URL to the header of the page.</dd> </dl> So basically I disabled it because obviously a Critical error is much worse then an optional error. Is there a way I can get rid of both errors?

Canonical tag help
Hi, We have a product which is marketed by affiliates . Affiliates send referrals to our sale page by adding their affiliate IDs to our product page like http://www.mysite.com/products.php?ref= 12345. We want to avoid the content duplication impression to Google by using canonical tags but we are not clear about its use. Should we use it on http://www.mysite.com/products.php ( actual page) or we should create temporary pages for each referral id i.e http://www.mysite.com/products.php?ref= 12345 and then add canonical tags to all those pages linking to proper page i.e http://www.mysite.com/products.php ? Thanks, shaz
