Political Campaign SEO
-
We are considering taking a candidate for office on as a client. The run would be for a state office in the U.S. by someone who is involved in politics/government but not currently an elected official. The candidacy would not be for a couple of years and the exploratory committee approached us asking if we would take on. Sooo, decision time.
First, yes I like the candidate (as much as I like business I could not do it otherwise).
Next, candidate has no real public persona other than FB, LinkedIn, etc. Our approach is to shut all down all social first - to prevent anything that is harmless from being manipulated - and then revise to a political run. Also to create a site for candidate that is not necessarily a political one that could gain some DA, PA over time as the candidate begins to put out opinion pieces, etc. around their beliefs in what is workable/needed.
We would maintain the site utilizing SEO until the announcement to run is made and then have a full political candidacy site go live with 301's from old site. Obviously, I am not at liberty to say names, etc. and some of our strategy specifics must be kept confidential as well. I would be interested in your opinions and thoughts on the approach and also if someone has handled SEO/SEM politically and has insight as to whether I should act like I am in the movies and ... RUN FORREST RUN!!!
Thanks,

Thanks Robert, me too!

Robert, I definitely understand what you are saying and know that there can be no leaks. But in the mean time your team could work with the candidate on his online reputation management. By creating non campaign media and content and optimizing it for the targeted keywords which will be the candidates full name.
A great example of a candidate who failed at this preparation was GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum. Danny Sullivan wrote about here. For four years leading up to his announcement to run, his campaign should have had a team working on his online reputation management problem. So that by the time he announced it, his name would have owned the first three pages of the SERP's. Instead, for most of his campaign the number 2 result on Google was a website defining Santorum as something disgusting that you wouldn't want your grandmother to find and negatively affecting his online presence. For most of the campaign there were two other negative sites that also showed up on the first page for his names SERP. If you ask me, I believe it could have been avoided.
I understand that your possible candidate probably isn't as high profile but that doesn't mean it won't get ugly during the race. I believe it would be better to own the SERP's now than have to try to play catch up. I hope that is helpful.

One thing Brian that might clarify for all is that the candidate cannot announce prior to a certain date within the next 6 months. That was the reason for the somewhat understated site prior to the official launch.
As I go forward, I will PM you.
Thanks,
-
Alex,
Thanks for the great article.
Most of what the candidate has done socially is known and within normal limits. Not sure of any kangaroos or etc. in closet. Good kids, kind to animals, etc.
I will push to keep the candidate human as I like them and would hate for them to become a politician...
Thanks,
-
Good points. First, my thought was that the first was to be with nothing political just Joe.com and that was it. Then JoeForSenate.com. I do agree you could do without the 301 though and simply redesign.
I was not talking about politically censored, but more about that with a person who is in their early 40's with tons of family and friends on their social is exposing a lot and that it is too easy today to turn a harmless comment from a friend into an incendiary. one of the things I like about this person is they are real.

Hello Robert,
I have some experience working with political candidates and what you definitely need to prepare for is online identity management. I would say that is going to be 75% of your efforts. I would start on that immediately after you make your decision and saturate the SERP's targeting the candidates name. I would suggest heavy video marketing and Press Release marketing as well to help with these efforts. Also take advantage of the grass roots folks to help with Social Media and Blog marketing. If you would like some more info you can contact me directly.

If it were me, I would build a few blogs on the subdomain to start generating DA rather than doing a 301. You could have an opt-in or one page lander on the main site with coming soon or something like that. Then once your ready to go, make a design change rather than a 301. That way you have a lot of Authority at launch and hopefully some people interested in what you are all about.
I have never run a political campaign, but I would think that reputation management would be an easy up-sell as well. I would buy all of the xyzcrook.com, xyzisacrook.com, and getxyzoutofoffice.com stuff like and create a 301 to a seperate blog where you rank for those scam keywords but spin them to the positive.
Just a few thoughts I had.

I don't see why you'd 301 either, if the site was something like the client's name.com why would you need to?
If past social activities had been censored, I'd wonder what a candidate had to hide. Part of the problem with many people in politics is that they don't seem to have a human side.
Here's a good article I read a couple of days ago, it could be right up your street!

Sounds very interesting and like a great opportunity for you.
What I don't get - why build a strategy for a site that you're going to eventually 301? Why not register the candidate's name, build up the content and the brand of the candidate over there, and then eventually just launch a site redesign/more formal look on the site once the candidacy is announced. Why the need to 301 to a new site? You don't want to lose some of your hard earned equity in 301s.
I also think in terms of social, be authentic, and let the candidate tweet about issues facing the community, etc. I think an authentic social media campaign will be more successful than a political censored one even before the candidate announces that they're running.

Infinite Scroll and SEO - Is it enough to only link to the previous and next page in the pagination?
Hi all, We are implementing an eCommerce site where the results pages of the products will be visibile on one page (always loading new products when you scroll down the page). Now, I have read that the Google spiders cannot "load" new products scrolling down the page, hence the spider only sees the first few products of the results page. Our developer wants to implement a system where a users sees the first products on example.com/products Then scrolling down, he will see new products with the URL changing to example.com/page/2 and so on. Is it enough that we add a pagination link that goes from example.com/products to example.com/page/2 Then another link that goes from example.com/page/2 to example.com/page/3 and so on, so the Google spider can make his way through all the pages? Or is that too much deep linking and the spider wouldn't even crawl all the results pages? Any recommendations how to go about this? Many thanks in advance!

How to add SEO Content to this site
Hi Great community and hope you guys can help! I have just started on a SEO project for http://bit.ly/clientsite , the clients required initial KPI is Search Engine Rankings at a fairly low budget. The term I use for the site is a "blurb site", the content is thin and the initial strategy I want to employ to get the keyword rankings is to utilize content. The plan is to: add targeted, quality (user experience & useful) and SEO content on the page itself by adding a "read more" link/button to the "blurb" on the right of the page (see pink text in image) when someone clicks on the "read more", a box of content will slide out styled much the same as the blurb itself and appear next to and/or overlay over the blurb and most of the page (see pink rectangle in image) Question: Is this layer of targeted , quality (user experience & useful) and SEO content (which requires an extra click to get to it) going to get the same SEO power/value as if it were displayed traditionally on the initial display? If not, would it be better to create a second page (2nd layer) and have the read more link to that and then rel-canonical the blurb to that 2nd page, so that all the SEO passes to this expanded content and the second page/layer is what will show up in the rankings? Thanks in advance qvDgZNE

Do pull quotes affect SEO positively or negatively?
I like the design element of a pull quote to ad interest and highlight an important point. If I use an exact quote from the page in a pull quote on that page, does that negatively affect SEO as duplicate content? Are there formatting or tagging methods that could help pull quotes to boost SEO? For clarity, by "pull quote" I mean a stylized bit of text that floats on a page in such a way that the body text wraps around it. It is actual text (not text embedded in a graphic) but it behaves like an image with text wrapping around it. Here's an example (in red on the right side): http://www.21ct.com/resources/news-room/21ct-announces-its-latest-us-patent-for-advancing-big-data-security/

Changing from All-in-One SEO to Yoast SEO
I am currently using, and have always used the All-in-One SEO plugin for my website, but I have have heard time and again that the Yoast SEO plugin is superior. How do I transfer to this plugin instead? Do I need to deactivate the all in one seo plugin? What happens to all the tags that are already there for the thousands of pages, including the main page, that is functioning from the all in one SEO plugin?

How does using a CMS (i.e. Wordpress/Drupal) affect backlinks and SEO?
So I need to build a website with over 100 pages in it. Elements of the design will probably be moved around and or tested so I need to use a CMS. It's pretty much a review site so while the content will remain static I'd like to employ A/B testing to mess with conversion rates. Wordpress has a plugin for that even. So I'm just wondering, since CMS pages are pretty much created on spot and not retrieved from a library, how this affects backlinks and anchor text? How exactly does the external website point to yours if the URL is dynamically generated? Or am I misunderstanding something? Please recommend any extra resources as well if you can.

Word Press Seo Errors/ Questions
Hi my name is Tina I am new here I hope you guys can help me out. I thought building my new site with Word Press was going to simplify things, however I have a ton of errors, and I am not sure what they are, or how to fix them. I am hoping someone could share with me a solution for these errors. I have 28 rel=canonical errors, I am not sure what this means, I understand it to mean my pages are similar, and this is to set a heirarchy between my pages. Please correct me if I am wrong. If I am correct would this be necessary to add if my main keyword was "widgets" and my home page was optimized for "widgets" and my next page was "blue widgets" and so on. While my pages are similar they are all optimized for different versions of my main keyword some using long tail keywords. Do you know of a plugin that can help solve this problem? Also does anyone have a plugin they recommend for G+ my G+ authorship verification is causing an error as well? I am using Head Space 2 I have used this seo plugin numerous times with great success it has been my favorite seo plugin. However, we have a portfolio that shows our clients websites, and on those pages Head Space will not let me enter a description tag. What plug in do you guys recommend with more control over each page? Another interesting issue is on one of our pages I optimized it for our Canadian clients, and now every page has been listed in Google.ca for the keywords it should have on Google.com. We are listed on Google maps, verified in Google places, and our address is on the site so they know we're from the USA however, the majority of our keywords are only listed in Google.ca. We're on page one for all of them, we are in the top three on most of them so that's not bad, but we want to be listed in Google.com as well. Any suggestions on this?

Wordpress SEO Change of Structure
Hi, I have a Wordpress SEO Question. I ran the SEOMOZ checker on my website and it discovered roughly 70 of my 250 blogs had a URL length problem. I have removed the year and month from the WP structure as I read elsewhere that it is not important. The blogs displayed as follows: domain.com/blog/2011/02/contents-of-the-blog and the new structure is: domain.com/blog/contents-of-the-blog I have resubmitted the new structure to Google Webmaster Tools XML and updating the on-page sitemap on my main site. My blog was cached on 25th October and seems to be caching every 7 days, my website cached on the 24th and I wonder if I should do any follow up work to ensure the content gets crawled properly. a) Individually 301 redirect the old URLs to the new. b) Individual Canonical links for each. c) Adding the old pages to the robots file and disallowing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

SEO Friendly Image Swap Functionality Software
Anyone know of any software for this... I need a simple way to create SEO friendly Image Swap Functionality on multiple product pages of a static site. The idea is that customers can see different images within the product screen by clicking on thumbnails. For SEO purposes it is essential that: The rollover does not create a new URL when the product images are cycled The image needs to have an alt attribute (a different attribute set by the client for each product) As per: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/tips-and-musthaves-for-your-ecommerce-platform Thanks in advance.
