Adding NOFOLLOW to all external links, is this a good idea?
-
In the setting of a news site, with articles that often link to one or more outside sources, is it a good idea to rel="nofollow" all external links? Would this hurt link-building prospects?
Of course, internal links would keep on passing link juice back and forth, but is there real harm in following external links?
These would be links our writers and editors created themselves to reputable sources, blogs, etc.

Hello,
you said: "From Google's perspective a nofollow link means.... "They paid us!".
I understand this perfectly, but you are not saying that it's against google policy to get paid for banner ads on our website, right?
As long as I have a space dedicated to advertising and I use NOFOLLOW attribute I can sell spaces on my website, right?
Thanks a lot!

We have a blog that links out to six to ten external sites every day. All of those links are followed.
Our philosophy for linking out is to only give links to sites that are better than ours or sites that have superior content than ours for a specific subject. So we are not linking out to second class sites.
From Google's perspective a nofollow link means.... "They paid us!"..... or...... "We don't trust this!"..... and neither of those are the case. So why should we use nofollow?
From a pagerank perspective a nofollow has the same impact on internal pagerank flow as a followed link, so it saves you nothing to apply a nofollow. (Google originally blocked pagerank flow through nofollows but then they made it evaporate (a pagerank loss) and didn't tell webmasters. Then Matt Cutts told webmasters that pagerank is lost through nofollow just as it is through a followed link.) So, you don't know how google is treating this because they could have changed their mind again and not told anyone.
Finally, I think of it like this.... The web is the web because it is full of links from one site to another. If you believe that google rewards pages that link out to other great pages then you should be giving followed links. Why? Because if you use nofollow then maybe Google does not give you that reward. I don't know if that is true. Only google knows. But that is where I am placing my bets.

Any reason to nofollow outbound links to social platforms?
This one is stumping me - a site I'm working on has decided to nofollow all of their outbound links to LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. I can't find a reason for doing that...I think it's from the old and mistaken suspicion that this would deliver link equity away from the site. Everything I've read says that there's no downside to dofollow outbound links as long as they are to legit sites and on the up-and-up (e.g., not overly link-trading with another site, for instance). Thoughts?

Links to deep pages good for Homepage ranking?
Hello Moz community. My question today is: if I got great backlinks with anchor text "abc" coming to a deep resource page in my site, will these links help my homepage rank for keyword "xyz"? In other words, are all links (regarless of anchor text) coming to a site helpful for the homepage to rank for its main keyword? Thanks.

Link Building - Affiliate Link Programs
I'm getting some conflicting information when researching this... I want to create the most organic link building strategy that not only gets high authority sites linking to a website, but relevant websites. I'm creating an affiliate link program where I link to partner and affiliate companies, who in turn link back to me. The question is where to put these links. I was initially thinking of putting them in the footer so they add credibility to every page, and in turn ask my affiliates to do the same thing. However; some sources say that Google no longer looks at links in the footer section. Is it true that Google doesn't count links in footer sections? And do you have any tips on creating this Affiliate Link Program?

Creative link building ideas for law sites
I have a client who does not actively participate in the content writing or resource providing part of optimization or link building. I want to build some more links to the site outside of content spreading and guest blogging. I have read a lot of the recent articles on creative ways to build links but feel that most would not apply to this kind of site. Any ideas on creative link building methods for a law services info site?

What are some good easy links to get for new sites?
We are in the process of launching a couple of new sites and while we know it will be a long process to get them to rank, achieving some long-tail keywords would be beneficial. What sites would you recommend for getting some easy links to start with that can help the indexation and ranking process along in the preliminary stages? Or another way to put the question - when you launch a new site, what steps do you go through?

NoFollow links to increase TLD?
If you have a good amount of links, but your TLD is low, and you got say 100 more links from 100 seperate domains, but most were NoFollow, would that still help alot since you are increasing your overall TLD? I guess what I am asking is, should we not ignore nofollow links because they still can increase TLD? Thus, making our good dofollow links worth even more?

Links - In need of ideas
Hi there! I have tried my best to get quality back links to my http://www.petmedicalcenter.com site but I feel like I have hit a wall. I have searched my competition to see what links they are getting and have been successful with some. Some websites just don't respond. Are there any valuable resources I am missing? Or ideas? My biggest concern is ranking well for the search term "vet las vegas" and "las vegas veterinarians". So far I have managed to get to the second page on Google. Thanks in advance for your help!
